22.01.2022 Whilst not strictly about good food, this is a good coffee/chai story to support. Damon once called the Hills his home and this edible hot drink cup has been invented by 2 women from Melbourne. They want to crowd fund it. Maybe a nice Festive Season present for you to consider. Shakti

13.01.2022 Celebrating 5 years since the launch of Food Is Free Tecoma!! What an incredible resource sustained and valued by our local community. Thank you for all who have visited the FIFT cupboard, fridge and freezers and a big shoutout to all who maintain and care for the cupboard on a regular basis!! These past months FIFT has increasingly provided access to food when food insecurity has unfortunately affected more and more people. The Hills Food Frontier are extremely grateful to Tecoma Uniting Church for our partnership for the FIFT and FLAME Garden and support over these years. Come visit FIFT, opposite the Tecoma bakery on Burwood Hwy. Take what you need, leave what you don’t, share what you have with love. Food Is Free Tecoma

09.01.2022 From Sustain: The Australian Food Network... We are calling for the creation of a $500 mn national Edible Gardening Fund, to be co-financed by Federal, State and Territory governments. We’re in a national emergency, and we must respond accordingly. Dietary-related ill-health and mental illness cost Australia around $200 bn every year.... With COVID-19 and the climate emergency, these costs will rise substantially. More people will experience hunger and food insecurity. In a country as wealthy as Australia, there is no excuse for this. In particular, the levels of food poverty and dietary-related ill-health amongst First Nations communities are a matter of national shame. Edible gardening has immense power to do good, as the first-ever national Pandemic Gardening survey has shown. Food growing is especially important for, and valued by, members of low-income household and hose living with mental illness and chronic conditions such as cancer and PTSD. Now is the time to scale up edible gardening and urban food production. Remove the roadblocks, unlock vacant land, connect water supplies, provide soil, compost and seedlings. We want kitchen gardens in every school, edible gardens on verges, and a community garden in every suburb. All of this needs to networked, coordinated and supported at every level, with policy commitments and targets. Many Councils are already supporting individuals and groups in their communities through food system strategies that have edible gardening as a core pillar. But it’s unfair to expect local government and communities to do all the heavy lifting on their own. A $500 mn national Edible Gardening Fund will empower communities and Councils to drive a mass expansion of urban food production across Australia. Everyone will benefit. For a tiny fraction of our current annual health expenditure, the return on investment will be enormous. Join us this Friday to learn more! Ticket sales end on Thursday night, so head to the LINK IN BIO now! #sustainablefoodsystems #urbanagriculture #urbanfarming #resilientcities #localfood #pandemicgardeningsurvey #ediblegardening #frontyardfarmers #vergegardens #communitygardensk
