20.01.2022 We’re so pleased to share our November issue with you, the biggest issue we’ve done to date. For our cover story, writer Bonnie Mary Liston spoke with Saroo and Sue Brierley about their two new books out this week. You might remember Saroo’s book, Lion, which was adapted into a Hollywood film - it was based on his incredible story of going missing as a five year old in India and ending up in the loving arms of Sue and the Brierley family in Hobart, then finding his way back t...o his hometown again many years later. Click the link in our bio to see what they’ve been up to since the film’s release. We were also thrilled to chat with actor @martadusseldorp ahead of the opening of The Bleeding Tree at Theatre Royal (Hobart) next week. Tickets are still available with three new shows announced. A big thank you to all our contributors, advertisers and local businesses who have helped get this issue out into the world. You’re all legends and we thank you for your support. Grab a copy at your local Hill Street Grocer and one of over 250 cafes, retail outlets and public places across Hobart. See more
19.01.2022 The Beaker Street Festival people are keeping events alive with Sci Art Walks - an audio series of interesting people (think David Walsh, Professor Gretta Peci and Bob Brown) speaking at locations around Tassie alongside musicians such as Brian Ritchie, Ben Salter and Emily Sanzaro (in the pic). You can read our interview with Dr Margo Adler about the program live on our site today. https://thehobartmagazine.com.au/science-art/

19.01.2022 The Cascades Female Factory was a brutal place for a woman to be - emotionally and physically. And can you imagine how tough it would’ve been in cold weather like we have today? Possibly pregnant, maybe mothering and trying to keep your kids alive? The Cascades Female Factory Historic Site and Port Arthur Historic Site, Tasmania reopen today from 10am - 4pm with free entry for children (until 31 December, including school holidays). You can pre-book on the website too. Photos: Present day Alistair Best, historic images Tasmanian Archives and Heritage. You can also check out the history page in our April issue on our website for more on this fascinating place.

15.01.2022 The Frank Hurley Photography Awards, @frankhurleyphotoawards featured in our August edition, have extended the deadline for entries until 31 December, 2020. You can enter now in any one of the five categories - polar, scenic composition, nature, or portrait of adventure - to win $30,000 worth of prizes, including an all expenses paid berth on an Antarctic expedition! If you're more interested in seeing cool pictures than taking them, the finalists' and winners' photos will be on display at @tasmuseum from February 2021. These pics are from the State Library of NSW, Mitchell Collection. SWIPE for what we believe is Frank Hurley’s best/cutest picture ever...

14.01.2022 Want clients to come to you like a raging torrent, like a flowing river, like an endless stream...see what we did there? Well, consider booking ad space in @thehobartmagazine’s September issue. It’s shaping up to be a goodie with lots of local news, profiles and interesting goings-on. DM us for current rates, starting at just $195. Can anyone guess where this incredible waterfall is?
14.01.2022 In our latest August issue of The Hobart Magazine we posted a pic of the Hobart Rivulet near South Hobart after days of heavy rains. There was loads of rubbish lining the waterway. Hats off to Luke and his clean up team who have taken it upon themselves to pick up the debris. It's on again this Saturday and the group are meeting at South Hobart Primary School and working their way down toward Hamlet Hobart.
13.01.2022 No, the hand isn’t smallerWE’RE BIGGER! The new issue is out today with Tasmanian cyclist Richie Porte on the cover. Like everyone, COVID-19 has put a spanner in the works for Richie and his family - not only has Le Tour de France been pushed back to later this month, his Olympic campaign was interrupted, oh and his wife is due to give birth during the Tour! No biggie. We had a great chat with Richie about his training, his life between two continents and how his little boy ...Luca keeps him down to earth. We also take a dive into the possibilities for the Derwent Entertainment Centre, talk about how interstate migration could actually help us rebound and check out a few new apps that have been built right here in Hobart. So why the bigger size? Well, during lockdown 1.0 we decided to act on feedback that readers wanted more stories and advertisers wanted more space. Give the people what they want! So we’re slightly bigger, ditched the glossy cover and focused on creating a community rag that we hope you will all love. Click the link in bio to flick through the digital mag, or keep an eye out at Hill Street Grocer and cafes and public places all over town for a print copy.
12.01.2022 Cheers to Crowne Plaza Hobart on their opening today. Not an easy feat amid a pandemic. Pop in for a drink and check it out!
11.01.2022 I’d say our Tassie kids are the envy of the world right now. With a relatively normal existence in the grand scheme of things and able to explore our incredible backyard. Thanks for tagging us @sally.medwin in this moment at Oyster Cove. #makeyourselfathome

10.01.2022 Scotland or Tassie? Hobart Snapshot Tours tagged us in this moody shot at Coal Mines Historic Site on the Tasman Peninsula. Now that we can get out and about more in our own state, where is top of your list?
10.01.2022 This summer there’ll be some new public art to explore along the South Hobart Rivulet Track. Opening this Friday for NAIDOC week, palawa wiradjuri artist Luana Towney presents ngayapi niyakara (Born to Dream), a travelling book about the muwinina people of Hobart. The story is told through five panels along the Rivulet track, starting at the Wynyard Street entrance and finishing at Hobart Linear Park. Luana describes the story as a child friendly history lesson about first c...ontact in nipaluna in both palawa kani and English. Luana is a painter, basket weaver, shell stringer, poet and photographer. She was recently awarded the First Nations Aboriginal Writers Network Aunty Kerry Reed-Gilbert Open Age Poetry award and the Tasmanian Aboriginal Emerging Writer award in 2020. This project is a partnership between Constance and the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre, supported by the City of Hobart and assisted through Arts Tasmania by Elise Archer MP Minister for the Arts. Pictured is the artist Luana Towney with her talented daughter Jamaya Summers who did the illustrations for the project. by Jillian Mundy
10.01.2022 Helping the community when we can is a big part of why we love creating The Hobart Magazine. You might remember Shaun and Zac, our cover guys from September last year. Their cricket team, the Derwent Scorpions, is part of the Intercultural Sports League, with players coming from disadvantaged and diverse backgrounds. They’re on the hunt for a sponsor to help with their entry fees for this year’s comp. Is that your business? You can PM us for details but we’re also throwing in an article about the sponsorship to sweeten the deal. Come on Hobart! Get behind the Derwent Scorpions!

08.01.2022 Today is @ruokday. I think this year it’s more important than ever to check in on those around you. Late last year we featured @mitchmcp, who started @staychatty, on our cover. I loved our chat and I walked away with a new resolve to check in on the people in my life more often. Thanks Mitch for all that you do in creating conversations around mental health. #ruok #ruokday @andrewwilsonphotography_
