17.01.2022 Women’s Health Week is a nationwide event organised by @jeanhailes that is focused on educating society on women’s health. Amongst the stress of COVID-19, it’s very easy to forgot about the importance of taking care of our health and well-being. Yes we are currently in a pandemic, but this doesn’t mean that you as a woman should be forgotten. You can still see your GP, specialist, or other HCP. A couple of reminders of what we should be taking care of: - Are you up to date ...Continue reading

14.01.2022 Last week, for the first time in 6 months, I ended up getting a migraine. I remember the first time I ever got one. I was grade 1 or 2 and I lost my vision. I thought something was in my eyes, and tried to wash them out but it wouldn’t go away. Then, from year 5-8, I got them almost every week to the point where I developed a fear of them and the teachers/school nurse thought I was faking it. All through my teens and early 20s, I’d get them every now and again. Until finally ...last year, they almost disappeared completely. I honestly attribute this to getting on-top of my health, especially working on my gut, detoxification, and hormones. With all crazy stress of the last few months, my hormones have been taking a roller coaster, my gut health has deteriorated, and I know my liver isn’t functioning well (hello chemical sensitivities). So when the migraine came along, I hit the breaking point. I was honestly so upset. It was one of the worst migraines I’d experienced for long time, leaving me with nausea, a huge headache, and bad fatigue the next day. But instead of letting this get to me once again and create another fear, I took this as a wake up call. To get on top of my stress management, keep working on my gut health, and begin supporting my liver again. Let the healing begin See more

10.01.2022 Considering I took a hiatus from this account for quite some time, and I have quite a few new followers, I thought I would take so time to reintroduce myself and talk about how I found naturopathy! My name’s Ashleigh and I’m a Registered Nurse who works part-time in General Practice, whilst simultaneously studying part-time in a Bachelor of Health Science (Naturopathy). I’ve currently completed 3 and a bit years of the degree, and have approx 2 years to go. A little bit abo...ut my journey - I grew up in a family who were followers of conventional medicine, as my Dad is a GP! After graduating high school, I decided to somewhat follow in Dad’s foot steps and study nursing. During this degree, I developed a passion for exercise and nutrition, however this went a bit too far and it resulted in me developing an eating disorder. I became seriously thin and I unfortunately lost my period for 3 years, as well as developed severe depression, and gut issues. On the journey to getting well again, I came across a wonderful naturopath who helped me heal. I then decided to pursue studies in nutrition, eventually transferring into naturopathy and here I am today 3 years later. Along my journey, I’ve developed passions for specific areas, including the treatment of women’s health, mental health, gut health, endocrine disorders, and acne. I’m also a true believer of integrative medicine, and have seen time and time again how conventional and naturopathic medicine can work together in close harmony I’m still on my journey of healing, but I feel myself growing stronger every day! I feel super blessed to have found a career pathway which I am extremely passionate about and love xxx See more

09.01.2022 Let’s do a check-in... How are you feeling? The current situation in Victoria is extraordinarily overwhelming, in fact I feel like I’m suffocating at times. The unknown of what will be happening next. Please make sure you’re taking some time out for yourself. Doing something you love. Nourishing your body. Getting hydration. Embracing some sort of movement, whether that be a walk, yoga, pilates, a run, weights etc. Ensure you’re getting enough sleep. Finding some sort of outlet to reduce stress levels. Seeking help where needed. We will see this through guys, I can feel it. I can feel the strength amongst our society, the hope we have for better times in the near future. We can do this Victoria

09.01.2022 It’s time to drop a truth bomb. Part of me has been ashamed of opening up, the other part of me is proud of how far I’ve come. This isn’t a pity party, I just hope that by posting this, I will help someone out there who may be struggling with something similar Some of you may be aware that I’ve been experiencing ongoing fatigue and health issues for 3+ years now. Earlier this year, I was diagnosed by a rheumatologist with fibromyalgia. I haven’t let this diagnosis define me..., but it’s helped me to better understand what is going on in my body. Fibromyalgia is a functional somatic disorder that manifests with pain and fatigue. It’s diagnosed via ruling out other causes of symptoms, such as autoimmune disorders. Sleep and mood disturbances can play a major role in its development, especially as serotonin is involved in the pain perception and mood regulation pathways. As a result, it’s also know as ‘Central Sensitisation’, whereby the brain becomes hypersensitive to stimuli and responds to pain differently. The disorder is also correlated with other disorders, including SIBO/IBS, chemical sensitivities (which I’ve had), and CFS. Current evidence suggests that a multi-modulatory approach may be beneficial in reducing and managing this condition. For me, this has meant working with a naturopath, Integrative GP, Osteopath, and TCM Doctor. Making sure I get proper sleep, regulating my mood, reducing stress, supplementation, taking herbs, eating a whole foods diet/limiting processed foods, reducing alcohol intake, supporting liver health, and having a good support network have been super beneficial. I’m happy to say that I’m doing so much better and rarely experience symptoms, unless I go through a stressful period or I’m sleep deprived . I’ve improved my exercise tolerance too, which has been a huge game changer for me. If you’ve come this far, thankyou Please feel free to reach out if you need a chat or a point in the right direction! Much love, Ashleigh xx See more

08.01.2022 Over the weekend I was honoured to shoot for a friend of mine. I’ve been burning the candle at both ends for months now, and I’m once again manifesting signs of stress through changes in bodily functions. I finally had the chance to get back in touch with my creative side, feeling fun and feminine again. This has been a little reminder for this women to finally start practicing self-care

05.01.2022 What is a Naturopath? Naturopathic Medicine is a holistic medical modality that focuses on supporting an individual to live a healthy lifestyle, especially via the promotion of consuming a nourishing diet, drinking clean water, maintaining an active lifestyle, practising stress management, and getting adequate sunlight. We may make dietary and lifestyle modifications, and prescribe herbal medicine and vitamins/mineral supplementation when deemed appropriate for an individual.... Major principles include: 1. First, Do No Harm (Primum non nocere) - using non-invasive and the least toxic treatments 2. The Healing Power of Nature (Vis medicatrix naturae) - where possible, supporting the body’s inherent capacity to heal itself 3. Identify and Treat the Causes (Tolle causam) - identifying, addressing, and removing the underlying causes of disease, illness, and dysfunction 4. Doctor as Teacher (Docere) - providing education and supporting patients in managing their own health in order to make long-term manageable changes 5. Treat the Whole Person (Tolle totum) - looking at the body as a whole, Naturopaths strive to treat an individual and not their merely their disease, specifically focusing on addressing nutrition, lifestyle, medical and family history, and the physical, emotional, mental, social, environment, and genetic factors that may contribute to alterations in health 6. Prevention (Praevenic) - preventing poor health in order to promote vitality and a state of wellness See more
