16.01.2022 "Boochani’s case also highlights what is often lost in the focus on abstract labels and legal categories based on immigration status. Among the men Australia sent to PNG are acclaimed writers and journalists, professional sportsmen, artists, recipients of prestigious international human rights prizes, and advocates working to help others. There are if given the chance doctors, engineers, and other skilled workers; students and apprentices; fathers, uncles, sons, and nephews, waiting to join family members abroad." http://ow.ly/DR2350xz8sO

13.01.2022 COVID-19 update from The Humanitarian Group

12.01.2022 Dear Supporters, There are some changes coming to The Humanitarian Group, so we are excited to share the news that on October 1st, we will be formally merging with Tenancy WA and the Employment Law Centre of WA to launch a new entity Circle Green Community Legal. In coming together, the Circle Green Community Legal team is committed to not only continuing the important work that each group has been doing individually until now, but to significantly improve the breadth of wh...at we do, providing holistic, wrap-around models of our services. With this merger, we aim to create a system, place and space to ensure a safety net of world-class legal advice, education and advocacy in our specialist fields. The new entity - Circle Green - will be the only not-for-profit service in WA, offering specialist legal advice, further assistance, representation, advocacy, community legal education, referrals, outreach and support in employment, migration, tenancy, and family and domestic violence. We will also be the only community legal centre in WA providing free professional assistance, legal advice and education to humanitarian visa holders, asylum seekers, refugees and other people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in need of support. With this in mind, we have developed the new entity with the ideal of access to justice at its core. We aim to better meet the unmet demand for services and support for people in need, and to work collaboratively with our valued partners and referrers to foster innovation, creativity of thought and excellence in our core specialty areas. We will soon be sharing our new brand with you our key partners and supporters and look forward to continuing to work with you to help create better access and permanent solutions for those who need our help.

08.01.2022 We were honoured to be nominated as a finalist in the Diversity and the Law category of the Australian Migration and Settlement Awards which were held in the Great Hall of Parliament House on Wednesday 23rd October. We did not win on the night, but it was a great privilege to be nominated alongside so many incredible people and organisations working to help migrants settle into their new lives in Australia. The nomination is a reflection of the success of our VOICE Program, t...he legacy of which lives on as we continue the important work of helping vulnerable women, from culturally and linguistically diverse communities, who suffer domestic violence. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees for their fantastic work. A special shout out to Ishar Multicultural Women’s Centre and the City of Stirling for their much deserved wins and for showcasing all the good work being done here in Western Australia. 08.01.2022 Research finds that people seeking asylum who have a lawyer representing them are 7 times more likely to succeed at government tribunal review, than those witho...ut a lawyer. That's 7 times more likely to remain safe. The assistance RACS provides is critical and for the people we support, it can mean the difference between staying safe and being sent back to danger. Thanks to RACS Board member A/Prof Daniel Ghezelbash for his powerful article.
