The boys had the opportunity to participate in track events such as hurdles, sprint, long run and relays. For the field events, the boys participated in the egg and spoon race, the sack race, vortex throwing, turbo javelin throwing and the tug-of-war. 15.01.2022 During Term 3, Year 2 have been investigating our Earth and Space Sciences inquiry topic, asking the questions What are Earth’s resources?, How do we use them? and How can we care for them?. We posed questions, looked at many different environmental concerns and explored ways we could reduce, reuse and recycle. We created class e-books using recycled materials to make collages showing what simple steps we can all take in our everyday lives to help our environment. The b...oys liked the thought of what our hands could do singularly and collectively to make a difference. Year 2s work was inspired by Melanie Walsh's book 10 Things I Can Do To Help My World (Walker Books, 2008). #thehutchinsschool #earlylearningcentre #melaniewalsh

04.01.2022 Kindergarten teacher Mrs Stella Daglas shared a beautiful book of work by the late Tasmanian photographer, Peter Dombrovskis. The Kinder boys noticed that some photos were calm, others had bright colours, and the close ups of natural things like moss and lichen made them look interesting and beautiful. Peter’s unique photographs inspired the boys to experiment with photography on our visit to Lambert Park. The instructions were to look for beautiful and interesting things to... photograph. The boys looked down, in the middle, and up high to really take in everything in the environment. They worked in pairs sharing our old iPads as their camera. When we got back to our room we looked at some of the photographs and the boys described why they had taken the photo. Through this experience the boys are developing aesthetic appreciation and taking the time to really look and think creatively about what to capture. They are learning to share and wait for their friend to have their turn, and to be responsible with the equipment. Most importantly they are learning about, connecting with, and respecting the natural environment. Great work boys! See more

02.01.2022 It is with pleasure that we share with you a sample of the outstanding academic achievements of our Year 11 and 12 students in 2020. The exceptional results are testament to the boys’ efforts and discipline to academic studies throughout the year. A year where staff and students demonstrated versatility and determination to overcome the challenges of six weeks of home-based learning, compromised experiential learning opportunities in physical and Outdoor Education subjects an...d limited performance opportunities in the Arts. Despite these challenges, the boys’ commitment to their academic studies remained focussed with some placing amongst the very highest achieving students in Tasmania, while for many others, their hard work culminated in achievements beyond their own expectations. In summary, four boys achieved an ATAR above 99 and 27 boys achieved the highest score possible in at least one pre-tertiary subject. 02.01.2022 The Year 6 classes have been studying the geographical diversity of the Asia region and the location of its major countries in relation to Australia. They have been developing their mapping skills and practicing finding data from primary and secondary sources. As we are nearing the Lunar Mid-Autumn Festival, we decided to celebrate our learning about Asia by hosting a Chinese banquet for the boys. The Chinese and EAL (English as an Additional Language) Departments have worked... together with the Grade 6 Team to organise this event that included learning how to use chopsticks, trying typical Chinese Food (moon cakes, dumpling, rice crackers and chicken pieces),watching a video of our Year 5 boys from mainland China and Hong Kong talking about their experiences of life overseas and Australia, and a question and answer session with our Chinese teachers and older boys about how life is the same/different. Apart from Greater China, the Lunar Mid-Autumn Festival is also celebrated in Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and the Chinese diaspora in Australia. The event was a great success and our boys not only got to experience the food, music and decorations of the festival but they are beginning to understand the diversity, actions and motives that underpin human actions in various cultures. What a way to finish a fun term of learning!

The degree and speed of change has resulted in collective uncertainty, insecurity and apprehension for many young people. Confronting images of PPE, hoarding, death, suffering, hospitals, masked people and empty cities have proliferated in the media. Research recently released by Unicef Australia in a study called ‘Living in Limbo’ reports that almost half of the 1,000+, 13 to 17 year old...s they surveyed were experiencing increased levels of stress and anxiety, and that their ability to cope was in decline. As staff of The Hutchins School worked remotely during lockdown, the Art Curator (Dr Joy Barber-Milojevic) and School Counsellor (Mr Matthew Magnus) discussed how best to support the young people of the School during this challenging time. They considered what meaningful wellbeing measures might be introduced to provide every student the opportunity to express how they were feeling. The idea of a creative project involving the whole school was developed with the rationale being that through the medium of art, participants might have their own unique response valued and validated. A plan for every student to participate in the making and flying of a kite was formed. Throughout September and October students teamed up in groups, to share their experiences of COVID-19 and design their own kite. Part of this process included writing words expressing what they hoped or wished for the future, upon the kite tails. In what was a spectacular and vibrant school event, students from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12 gathered together on the War Memorial Oval to fly their kites. The idea that we share the same sky with everyone, everywhere, at this time is particularly poignant. That the multiple and collective voice of the School community fly in an immense sky has the potential to be a powerful and eloquent response to the extraordinary events of 2020. Thank you to all staff involved in forming what was a meaningful and fun-filled event for our students.
