24.01.2022 When you are feeling stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed, there is a good chance you are in your sympathetic nervous system which controls your flight-fight response. Your thoughts may then spin out of control escalating your stress levels. One way of dropping back into your parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for you ability to feel calm and relaxed, is to focus on your exhale. You can feel the benefits of this technique in 10 seconds, all you need is to reme...mber to use this tool in times of overload. 1. Lay down on your back (or stay seated if necessary) with a pillow under your head and knees 2. Place one hand on the space between your middle lower rib cage and one hand on your chest / heart area 3. Fully exhale through your nose. As you inhale feel the gentle rise of your hands on your body. Lengthen your exhale so it’s always longer than your inhale. Repeat until you feel a sense of calm TIP: don’t force the air in or out all at once when breathing. Allow the breath to slowly enter... and.... exit the body in a controlled manner like a balloon inflating and deflating. Try and relax the muscles in your face while doing this exercise. 16.01.2022 The Perfect Mind- Body Hangover Cure!! Yes that’s right, even health advocating Pilates instructors can drink too much and wake up feeling seedy In truth, I am not a fan of drinking as I hate the way it makes me feel the next day and in general how it lowers our bodies vibration. On top of that I tend to feel guilty for going against my health values.....On top of THAT... as a Pilates instructor I tend to strive for perfection and have very high standards on myself which c...an lead to self punishment. All of this making the hangover 10 times worse!! So instead , it’s better to take a more self loving approach. If you can relate to this , the next time you drink too much or fall off your no sugar diet for example, try and take an action more aligned to your health value e.g doing some exercise, taking a bath, having a rest, or putting nourishing food into your body. Not only will it do your body a whole lotta good, it will help you feel better about yourself because you are taking a step towards your values rather than dwelling in the self punishment. So, after a terrible sleep and feeling sorry for my liver and kidneys after too many beverages the other day, instead of self loathing, I blended up this random and extremely delicious smoothie! 02.01.2022 One of my inspirations is Dr Shauna Shapiro, an author and professor of Psychology at Santa Clara University who has conducted ample research into the health benefits of mindfulness. She explains that we need to watch out for the difference between when we are being mindful to when we are being judgmental. When we are living or acting in a mindful way we are coming from a place of compassion and self awareness. When we are negatively critiquing and judging ourselves, a s...ituation, or others there is usually a sense of shame that comes with it. Dr Shapiro found that self judgment and shame combined can literally shut down areas of the brain associated with learning and growth making it extremely difficult to improve as individuals. Practising mindfulness can also strengthen your immune system, reduce cortisol levels, improve sleep, and increase attention, all of which increase your energy!! If you think that being harsh on yourself while you’re exercising or beating yourself up if you don’t exercise will lead to feeling or looking better, than think again. Try taking a mindful approach to the way you chose to move your body. One that encourages compassion , self love and growth, rather than feelings of stress, not being good enough, shame, and guilt. I can not plank or do a down dog or even do the classic pilates 4pt kneeling ... so I though to do a Class based completely around leading from your core. True core strength gives you the agility of an athlete ... it is the kind of strength that helps you to move with grace and fluidity.
