23.01.2022 This week's #tbt is PATTERNS OF COLLECTING FROM THE BOWER at The Johnston Collection (4 June - 18 September 2018) PATTERNS OF COLLECTING FROM THE BOWER at The Johnston Collection was a touring exhibition presenting the artwork and items from the unique personal collections of four contemporary Victorian artists, Loris Button, Deborah Klein, Louise Saxton and Carole Wilson. The artists are linked by their studio practice, their regional locations and connections and their love... of gleaning. Their studio collections range from curiosities, natural history specimens, memorabilia, discarded books and china, fabric, carpet and lino, and old tools of trade. The definition of a bower includes the idea of an enclosed space; a 'sanctuary' and a space in the natural world, in which objects are gathered. It has a connection to the garden - to plants, birds and insects and Australia is home to at least seven different types of bowerbirds. In medieval times the bower referred to a woman's private space. Aspects of these meanings can be found, to greater or lesser extents, in the works of this particular group of artists, gathered together in this joint exhibition into one large ‘bower’ creating a space in which the private becomes public. Every Thursday we delve in to our archives to share images from past exhibitions and events. What has been your favourite exhibition at The Johnston Collection?

22.01.2022 This figure of Summer, represented as a young woman holding sheaves of corn, is part of a figure set of 'The Four Seasons' produced by the Bow porcelain factory in London c.1754. Allegorical figure sets were very popular in the eighteenth century, and were manufactured by a number of porcelain factories across England and Europe. It is suggested that this particular set of figures by Bow was influenced by Meissen porcelain factory in Germany, and that most Bow figures produce...d after 1752 had a Meissen prototype. His... personality and his romantic poetry made a unique impression on 19th century Europe and the term Byronic was coined. Find out just why Byron was considered mad, bad and dangerous to know!

16.01.2022 Join us on Wednesday morning as Valerie Krips shares her insight into Hilary Mantel's Interiors. Hilary Mantel’s 'Wolf Hall' trilogy is deservedly famous for its capacity to bring Tudor England to life. Remarkably, although we feel we know our way around Austin Friars, and can imagine the King arriving at Wolf Hall, Mantel gives us comparatively little description of rooms, or furniture. Yet even before we saw them in the BBC series we had a sense of the interiors in which so much of the action of the novels is set. This talk asks how that’s so, and what it means about us as readers, especially as readers of Hilary Mantel. Tickets via the link below. Virtual lecture live on Zoom at 10:30am Wednesday 18 November 2020.

15.01.2022 The Johnston Collection is a place where people meet art and artists. Each year , The Johnston Collection invite regional artists and craft makers to reinterpre...t items within the collection. In 2015 , it was Gippsland turn to work on the Christmas display. The director of the Johnston Collection , Louis Le Vaillant held several workshops with Gippsland artists on 'Christmas at the Johnston Collection 2015'. The works were then displayed in Fairhall over the Christmas period in 2015. The exhibition then toured to the East Gippsland Art Gallery and was exhibited there for a short period. HISTORY OF WILLIAM JOHNSTON & FAIRHALL William Robert Johnston (Lilydale, 8 June 1911 Pune, India 27 October 1986) was a prominent 20th century antiques dealer, collector, and property investor based in Melbourne. William Johnston’s lifelong passion for collecting beautiful objects began when his grandmother gave him a little teacup a circa 1815 Minton potteries teacup without its saucer - when he was about 8 years old. Beginning with the treasured teacup, Johnston over his lifetime, assembled the most astonishing collection now comprising more than 1,400 objects of English Georgian and Regency, and Louis XV period furniture, paintings, ceramics and objet d’art, now regarded as one of the best collections of its kind in Australasia. The Fairhall exhibition-house opened to the public in November 1990. The Johnston Collection is a multi award-winning and critically acclaimed museum that invites creatives from the broader visual arts and design communities to re-interpret the Collection through a regular program of re-installation and interventions of the permanent collection. The museum has a superb collection of English Georgian, Regency, and Louis XV fine and decorative arts, and objet d’art which was a gift from William Robert Johnston (1911-1986) to the people of Victoria. Johnston was a prominent Melbourne-born antique dealer, real estate investor and collector. The Collection is displayed in a constantly changing domestic setting, in his former residence, Fairhall, an historic East Melbourne townhouse. The Johnston Collection contains over 1,500 items and approximately 75% of its records are available for viewing online. https://johnstoncollection.org The collection includes ceramics, furniture, glass, horology (clocks and watches), metalwork (including silver), paintings (including miniatures and engravings), textiles, and objets d’art predominantly of English 18th century origin, as well as items from Europe, India, China and Japan. -The Depot - Home Of Textiles at Two Nowas -Helen Banks -Rhonda Albrecht -Gwenneth Poore -Creative Gippsland Thanks to Latrobe Regional Gallery for hosting the spectacular workshops. #creativegippsland #thejohnstoncollection #craft #art #christmas #gippsland

Martin Allen has worked in the antiques trade and been a collector for more th...an three decades, specialising in 17th and 18th century English furniture. 05.01.2022 Congratulations to JANET LAURENCE, whose exhibition 'JANET LAURENCE: THE PALM AT THE END OF THE MIND' (8 July - 17 September 2019) at The Johnston Collection ha...s been shortlisted for the Temporary or Travelling Exhibition category of the 2020 Museums and Galleries National Awards. In the exhibition Janet explored The Johnston Collection alongside her own creative practices - collecting and saving, nature and the environment - within the context of Fairhall exhibition-house. The title of the exhibition is drawn from the poem 'Of Mere Being' by Wallace Stevens: "The palm at the end of the mind, Beyond the last thought, rises In the bronze decor, A gold-feathered bird Sings in the palm, without human meaning, Without human feeling, a foreign song. You know then that it is not the reason That makes us happy or unhappy. The bird sings. Its feathers shine. The palm stands on the edge of space. The wind moves slowly in the branches. The bird's fire-fangled feathers dangle down." . . . Image: 'JANET LAURENCE: THE PALM AT THE END OF THE MIND' installation view, The Johnston Collection, 2019. Photograph by Adam Luttick.
