25.01.2022 Inspired by true events, Netflix's newest movie "The Red Sea Diving Resort" follows undercover agents who open up a fake hotel to real tourists as a cover to help smuggle thousands of Ethiopian refugees to safety. Aliyah was the dream of all of Ethiopia's Jews. When the hardiest Jews began to flee across the border to Sudan in an attempt to reach Israel, the relatives remaining behind suffered materially. Israel's Operation Moses lifted thousands of Ethiopian Jews from Sudan ...to Israel in 198485. The Ethiopian authorities ultimately granted JDC the right to attach cottage industries to local synagogues, and the modest income stream derived from these "industries" aided many of the diminished families. JDC also negotiated and received permission to reach out to Jews in villages, dispatching medical teams, delivering clothing, tents, and blankets, and setting up feeding centers. From JDC Archives, view photos of JDC's programs in Ethiopia in the 1970s-1980s: https://archives.jdc.org//programs-in-ethiopia-1970s-1980s/

17.01.2022 We believe the Jewish part of Jewish life is worth fighting for. That’s why at The Joint we place a huge importance of rekindling Jewish life in parts of the world where it is almost extinguished. We are always on the ground, working hand-in-hand with communities around the world, empowering them to keep their Judaism alight and helping them build a new generations of leaders capable of taking on tomorrow’s challenges and shaping the future of Jewish life. We connect people t...o their Jewish values. We run summer camps that help children embrace their Jewish identity. We run Active Jewish Teen Networks that cultivate a Jewish future. We offer global service, education and leadership development opportunities. Yes, we do all we can to keep Jewish life alive. But we can’t do it without your help. If you are able to, please consider making a donation today. With your help we can continue to light the way.

17.01.2022 On this night, Why is The Joint different from any other organisation in The Jewish World? The Joint Australia wants to share a short, good news message of resilience and continuity. Rest assured that The Joint will never Let Our People Go. Read how we are shining a light in all the dark corners of the world and in Israel:... The Joint is working. Our clients continue to receive the services they need to survive. We have over 1 million clients in-need, in over 70 countries, including of course Israel (where we are the largest NGO). All this is made possible by your generous support, for which we thank you. In many countries, we are donning Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and negotiating complex travel restrictions to ensure the most vulnerable Jews in the world have a life-line, needed now more than ever. 120,00 of our elderly customers are at the highest risk from Covid-19. Every day, we see them and care for them, on your behalf. No-one is forgotten. No-one is alone. We are immensely proud to be part of the worldwide network that for 106 years has managed adversity as a regular part of our duties. The Joint has always operated in extreme environments. The Pesach message is one of rescue and salvation. Such is the mission of The Joint: During World War I, World War II, the commencement of the State of Israel; When we rescued Jews from Arab lands Operation Magic Carpet Yemen 1950, Iraq 1952, Syria 1948 until we took the last Jews out this decade; In Egypt 1957, Iran 1949-1979, Ethiopia Operations Moses, Joshua and Solomon in the 1980’s and ’90s; Today in Ukraine, South America and other countries in secret. The Joint prevailed then. The Joint will prevail now. This too, will pass. The impact we are making together is palpable. From home to home, we wish you a Chag Pesach Sameach. If you wish to learn more about what we are doing in response to Covid-19, please follow this link: https://www.jdc.org/coronavirusupdates/

16.01.2022 We lead the Jewish response to global disasters, helping communities of all backgrounds and faiths rebuild. We’re on the ground when disaster hits, and we stay long after it’s over to make sure those communities get back on their feet. We also bring our expertise to slow-moving crises, like endemic poverty, food insecurity, and the plight of refugees, because repairing the world means taking action when we see people in need. We have responded to emergencies in over 68 countr...ies around the world. We have raised millions of dollars for aid programs. We help rebuild communities. Yes, we do all we can to respond to emergencies. But we can’t do it without your help. If you are able to, please consider making a donation today. With your help we can continue to light the way.

14.01.2022 Jews around the world still face threats anti-Semitism, violence, and social and economic upheaval. While our priority is to help Jewish communities live safely where they choose, when those threats endanger Jewish lives or Jewish life, we’re there with the boots on the ground to take them out of harm’s way. And we will continue to be there at a moment’s notice, wherever we are needed. We have rescued over 1 million Jews since 1914. We send shipments of food and medicines d...uring emergencies. We brought 25,000 Jews to Australia from Nazi ravaged Europe. Yes, we do all we can to rescue Jews in danger. But we can’t do it without your help. If you are able to, please consider making a donation today. With your help we can continue to light the way.

11.01.2022 Welcome to Ariel, our new CEO. The first woman CEO in Joint’s 107 year history. The future of hundreds-of-thousands of Jews who rely on Joint every year is in safe hands. Shabbat Shalom to you all.

11.01.2022 Every Rosh Hashanah, Anna Kondrashenko prepares hundreds of dishes of gefilte fish for the elderly members of the dwindling Jewish community of Transnistria, a breakaway republic between Moldova and Ukraine that is Europe’s poorest country. But for the some 200 people who come to the Hesed center for its annual Rosh Hashanah dinner almost all of them are elderly, extremely poor and living alone Kondrashenko said the fish is about more than sustenance or religious symbolism. It’s a feeling of belonging, remembering the family they’d lost or that left, she said.

10.01.2022 A Match Made in Szarvas Barbi Pasternàk-Szendy and Andràs Pasternàk met at Szarvas, the pioneering international Jewish camp The Joint runs with the help of the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation, in the early 1990s. Returning to the camp the Hungarian countryside as staff members in 2001, the two became close friends before beginning to date and eventually becoming engaged. For this couple whose love story is inextricably linked to their life-changing Jewish immersion experience at Szarvas, there was no better place to celebrate their union than the camp itself. Shabbat Shalom!

09.01.2022 We're heading into Shabbat this week thinking about our global community - and the Jewish community of India! When Michelle Blumenthal visited the Jewish community of India, what she found was a vibrant and thriving community where people took great pride in their Jewish identities and values. From the Jewish Community Center in Mumbai to the British Commonwealth's oldest synagogue in Cochin, she writes that "we may have prayed a little differently, but we were no less member...s of the same holy community." It's thanks to the Weitzman-JDC Fellowship at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion that Michelle was able to travel to India. The Fellowship is a partnership between HUC-JIR and JDC, run through JDC Entwine, and was founded by philanthropist and Jewish leader, Jane Weitzman and her husband, shoe designer Stuart Weitzman, whom we thank for their generosity and support. Read more about Michelle's experience in her blog post from The Times of Israel

09.01.2022 "There will always be Jews here. The flame of Judaism in Cuba will never go out." A tightly-knit Jewish community whose members escaped the Spanish Inquisition and survived Castro's revolution is there to stay, despite the challenges and uncertain future on the island. Havana's Jews get support from The Joint, which provides medications, kosher and other foods, assistance to the elderly, and Shabbat dinner that is free for all members of the community. Read more about this resilient and thriving community in this piece from Haaretz.com.

07.01.2022 Good afternoon Joint Supporter I hope that you are well in these trying times. We are very excited to announce the launch of our newly designed website. Please visit us at www.thejoint.org.au. After many months of hard work and dedication, we are delighted to officially announce the launch today.... Our previous site is in the process of being redirected to the new address, however please use www.thejoint.org.au going forward. JDC JUICE JUICE's mission is to connect young Jewish adults around helping others in their community which in turn has been an entry point for many young people to discover their Jewish identity, as well as build a community for the future. Starting in Kiev (and fostered in its early stages by JDC), JUICE is now independent of JDC and has already expanded to 4 cities and counting. They connect to more than 3,000 young Jewish adults while helping hundreds of vulnerable Jews in these 4 cities. Please take a look with pride, these images have all of your fingerprints on them. In the past week alone, JUICE has coordinated and delivered several hundred food packages to shut-in Hessed clients in Kiev, Odessa, Liviv and Kharkhov from money raised from JUICE participants. The Joint in action, innovation, development, independence. We hope you find our new site informative and easy to navigate. The Joint Australia wishes you Shabbat Shalom and a safe and enjoyable weekend.
