23.01.2022 John the Baptist’s Darkness -from Benedictus, Day by Day with Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI This was the task set before the Baptist as he lay in prison: to become... blessed by this unquestioning acceptance of God’s obscure will; to reach the point of asking no further for external, visible, unequivocal clarity, but, instead of discovering God precisely in the darkness of this world and of his own life, and thus becoming profoundly blessed. In a point of fact, we cannot see God as we see an apple tree or a neon sign, that is, in a purely external way that requires no interior commitment. We can only see him when we become like him, by reaching the level of reality on which God exists; in other words, by being liberated from what is anti-divine John, then, even in his prison cell had to respond once again anew to his own call for metanoia or a change of mentality, in order that he might recognize his God in the night in which all earthly things exist. The Christian of our day, too, can be shown no other way to friendship with God than the way of ceasing to look for external clarity and beginning to turn from the visible to the invisible and thus truly finding the Lord who is the real foundation and support of our existence. Only when we act in this manner does another and doubtless saying of the Baptist reveal its full significance: He must increase, but I must decrease (John 3:30). We will know God to the extent that we are set free from ourselves.

21.01.2022 Today is the feast day of Saint Teresa of Calcutta who became known as Mother Teresa. Born in Skopje, the capital of Macedonia, she moved to Ireland and then to... India, where she lived most of her life. In 1950 she founded the Missionaries of Charity, which had over 4,500 sisters and was active in 133 countries. She described their work as caring for the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for, people that have become a burden to society and are shunned by everyone". Teresa was admired by many for her charitable work and received a number of honours including the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Ronald Reagan and the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. She was canonised on September 4, 2016, and today, the anniversary of her death is her feast day. She is the patron saint of World Youth Day. 17.01.2022 Evening meditation: Who are your Monicas? Today is the Feast of St. Monica, who prayed fervently, for many years, for the conversion of her son Augustine. "Noth...ing is far from God" she once said. And no one. One of the most beautiful features of the liturgical calendar is that Monicas feast is on August 27, and Augustines on the following day. Priority for the first Christian in the family and the great theologians forerunner! St. Monica shed many tears for the conversion of her wayward son (as Augustine describes in his "Confessions"). Tonight perhaps you can pray in thanksgiving for all those who have prayed for you during difficult times, who helped you in your faith journey, and whose prayers continue to support you. 16.01.2022 GOSPEL OF THE DAY MK 6:17-29 Herod was the one who had John the Baptist arrested and bound in prison... on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married. John had said to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brothers wife." Herodias harboured a grudge against him and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so. Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and kept him in custody. When he heard him speak he was very much perplexed, yet he liked to listen to him. She had an opportunity one day when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet for his courtiers, his military officers, and the leading men of Galilee. Herodias own daughter came in and performed a dance that delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you." He even swore many things to her, "I will grant you whatever you ask of me, even to half of my kingdom." She went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" She replied, "The head of John the Baptist." The girl hurried back to the kings presence and made her request, "I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist." The king was deeply distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests he did not wish to break his word to her. So he promptly dispatched an executioner with orders to bring back his head. He went off and beheaded him in the prison. He brought in the head on a platter and gave it to the girl. The girl in turn gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb. See more
