25.01.2022 Something we've been hearing a lot of lately is the word "keto". Everything is about keto - keto supplements, keto diets, keto milkshakes... But the question here for you to really ask yourself is: what exactly is keto, and how necessary is it for you?... The reason things get labelled "fad" is because everyone jumps onto that particular bandwagon without really understanding it properly. Sure, we can all do our own reading, and from it discover that it is either the devil's child and is dangerous and we shouldn't ever do it. OR, people see it as the absolute elixir to life. The reality of keto is neither of those extremes. For some people, it can be truly beneficial. For others, wholly unnecessary. Don't get me wrong, I completely believe in keto being one of the most under-recognised and under-valued tools in the health-care tool box. However, it is also an easy thing to jump on because it sounds bad-ass, because celebrities are all losing weight on it, and because, well, it's so rebellious and different to what doctors and dietitians tell you! Because of the overwhelming interest we have been having on this topic, I have decided to do a FREE webinar this coming Saturday 11th November chatting all things keto for those who are trying it, are intrigued by it, or even skeptical of it. Spots are limited and registration is ESSENTIAL. Catch you all on Saturday! To register: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_kTrRAuegTPyhK1tLKZ5xvw

25.01.2022 IN CLINICAL PRACTICE It is really simple for us to just keep doing a particular thing, or making a particular set of recommendations because we are told to do s...o, or because we did that once, and it worked well. However, advances in science rarely come from blind repetitive actions like that. Sure, what you do and the recommendations you make may not be wrong - in fact, they may be absolutely right. But unless there is a thorough understanding of the background, it is almost impossible to make subtle modifications based on each individual person's needs. You can't tweak something you don't understand. You can't workshop through it. You can't recognise why and when something isn't working and know what you need to do to make it work. In the current age of medicine and health, nobody thinks for themselves anymore. Everything is about following protocol or guidelines. That was what frustrated me the most - people who just followed things because it was a thing. And don't get me wrong, I was one of them - I was a person who just followed the guidelines because it was a thing. The biggest wake up call I have received in recent years is to never follow a single movement blindly - no matter how cool it sounds, how logical it appears or how popular it is. So, you can imagine my frustration now: everyone is jumping onto keto and LCHF like people were jumping on low fat 50 years ago! I now roll my eyes when I see people (and I don't just mean practitioners, I mean lay people too) recommend keto and LCHF like it's THE silver bullet. I roll my eyes at certain forums where people launch down on others like vultures because of a difference in opinion or belief. SO - let's think about it for a second. 50 years ago, we adopted a high carb, low fat set of guidelines, and everyone jumped on it, like it was the bees knees. 50 years later, we're realising that wasn't right, and in fact low carb, high fat is the way to go. BUT - what if, we start to realise that there are distinctions within that where low carb doesn't have to be so low, and high fat doesn't need to be so high, and protein need not be so feared? I see people talk about carbs like it is the worst thing ever, reminiscent of the way people spoke about fats 50 years ago. I see people treat LCHF/keto with the same black and white filter we treated low fat diets. So - if there is anything I've learnt, it is to question everything, understand what you're recommending, and be okay if your understanding and beliefs are not the same as the next person's - as long as you truly understand it.

24.01.2022 LAST NIGHT We attended the screening of The Magic Pill, and was also fortunate enough to be invited on stage afterwards to do a short Q&A. This documentary really opened our eyes to the use of food in a therapeutic context, and how in many cases, it can significantly improve disease outcome, either on its own, as a means to wean off medication, or as an adjunct to medical therapy. ...Continue reading

21.01.2022 I AM SO FREAKIN' SICK TO DEATH Of crappy studies with crappy, alarmist headlines like this. Seriously. ... Reading the headline, one would think that low carb intake will somehow cause birth defects. Then, when you actually bother to read the original article, you realise that the real concern is not getting enough folate. That's like the number one concern for all pregnant women, and women trying to conceive. That is why recommendations are given to women who are trying to have a baby to start on folate supplementation. So - why exactly is low carb being implicated in all this?? Hate to break it to you all, but a diet low in carbohydrates is not synonymous with a diet low in folate. In fact, folate-rich foods are mostly low carb anyway, like dark leafy greens, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, citrus and berries.... Thing is this - if you want to warn against the dangers of not getting enough folate when pregnant, then do that. Speak about that. Educate on that. But - blaming low carb diets for low folate intake? Seriously. Grow up.

21.01.2022 HAPPY 2018! We had such a massive and amazing year last year, and what we have in store for this year is nothing short of exciting either! To kick off the year,... a couple of quick messages: * We officially get back to it all on the 8th Jan - calls and messages made and left this week will be monitored and responded to if urgent, but we officially kick back off next Monday. * In 2018, we are going 100% ONLINE - this means that we will be taking all appointments as phone or Zoom or Skype. This has been a direction we've been taking more and more in the last 12 months, especially with our growing database from interstate and overseas. (To all our current clients - you will be getting an email today to let you know about the changes, and we will also be in touch via phone next week to chat to you personally about this change). The benefit is now we can see you no matter where in the world you are ;) Otherwise, you can expect the same level of scientific rigor, same level of calling out BS from us in 2018. Shine bright and catch you all VERY soon!!! #2018 #CantWaitToGetThePartyStarted

19.01.2022 Today is Dietitian Day. I sit here, with mixed feelings as I reflect on what this day means to me. On the surface, it doesn't mean very much. I mean, I don't feel like I deserve to have a "day" celebrating what I do. ...Continue reading

19.01.2022 What A fabulous weekend at the @lowcarb_aus Gold Coast event where we met some of our biggest idols, leaders and disruptors in low carb and keto nutrition, and presented on LCHF: Theory to Practice, helping people understand how the science translates to the plate. @isupportgary @pbrukner @caryn.zinn #lchf #lowcarb #keto #nutrition #learning #science #application #metrodietetics #theketoclinic

19.01.2022 THIS WEEK AT HQ: We had the pleasure of chatting with the awesomely hilarious duo, 2KetoDudes - Richard and Carl. We chatted about our personal journey to where we are now, and why we have become so passionate about low carb and ketogenic nutrition over the last few years. The truth is, I am so proud to be a dietitian, and all of our practitioners are so proud to be dietitians and nutritionists. ... We are grateful for having the power to use our knowledge to change people's lives, and turn their health around. But, with great power comes great responsibilities - we have our clients wellbeing at the forefront of our minds and we are in this to better their lives and outcomes. Likewise, with great responsibility comes great power - and we will be using it to change the face of chronic disease management for all those who come through us.

18.01.2022 LAST YEAR IN DECEMBER I was quoted in an article published in New Idea magazine on the ketogenic diet. The ketogenic diet has been used quite extensively by Hollywood A-listers to lean out, but for us non-Hollywood people, we know that the ketogenic diet has gained much popularity and momentum in recent times as a viable solution for weight loss, but more importantly, in regulating hormonal and metabolic imbalances to generate positive health outcomes.... This particular article centres around the use of ketogenic diets for weight loss, but one of the stories (Megans Story) highlight the benefits of a ketogenic diet for mood disorders, especially in her case, PTSD and anxiety. She also noticed the benefits of a ketogenic diet on her food cravings, and how keto has helped liberate her from the grasps of food obsession. Whilst I love the fact that the ketogenic diet is being referenced in mainstream media publications, I am still cautious of the limitations a single article has to dispel decades of misinformation, and I am super aware of how easy it is to misconstrue information, even in well-meaning articles like this. 17.01.2022 Today marks the first official day of our Keto Clinic program and here is a short video of Sean teaching our participants how to use the glucometer. As we say again and again, the overall objective is not about getting the highest ketone readings. Having said that, it is still super important to track your progress, especially in the early stages of fat adaptation. One of the biggest blunders we witness people making when it comes to keto is not tracking their progress - no...t tracking food, not tracking bloods and not tracking ketones. So, if you are looking to get into ketosis, make sure you get good at tracking!

15.01.2022 FOR ALL PEOPLE WITH CROHNS AND COLITIS: This is for you. A case study showing the complete resolution of symptoms, normalising of laboratory markers, inflammation and intestinal permeability in someone with severe Crohn's disease after adopting a paleolithic ketogenic approach.... This patient was able to go from severe Crohn's to coming off all meds in a mere TWO WEEKS. This has been our experience 100% with Sean and we also have clients who, within 2-4 weeks of adopting a modified LCHF/Keto approach has completely reversed all symptoms. http://www.ijcasereportsandimages.com//ijcri-1069009201690

13.01.2022 Keto is still so poorly understood by many doctors and health care professionals. Sometimes you will be shunned by a doctor you placed so much trust in. Sometimes, your doctor will just refuse to cooperate. The truth is, they don't ever do it in a malicious way. But their actions nonetheless show ignorance and a failure to do their own due diligence, and research further so they can actually have a meaningful, unbiased discussion around the science of keto with you. Best thing to do is to not feel disheartened, to push on, and trust that there are people out there, like ourselves, who will be more than happy to guide you through your journey with nutritional ketosis.

12.01.2022 ABC 4CORNERS INTERVIEW 4 weeks ago, I was honoured to be interviewed as part of the ABC 4Corners investigation into the state of nutrition in this country, and the proposal of a Sugar Tax in Australia. With mounting evidence of SUGAR, not fat, being the leading cause of all major chronic health diseases in this country, why does the Dietitians' Association of Australia still promote the outdated low fat, high carb Guidelines as the best frame-work for healthy eating in this c...ountry? What implications does this have on the public perception of dietitians in this country, and more importantly, how is this affecting the health outcomes of people in this country? Tune in to ABC on Monday 30th April at 8:30pm to find out.

10.01.2022 OMG WE ARE SO EXCITED!!! The maiden voyage of the Keto Clinic's inaugural program is about to set sail in exactly 11 days. If you wanna be part of it - get in touch with us ASAP!!!!... #adapttofat #maidenvoyage #theketoclinic #changinglives

10.01.2022 WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO YOURSELF?? A question raised against the ketogenic diet for weight loss by....*drum roll* a bariatric surgeon! Whilst he may think that 2 eggs with pats of butter and bacon with coffee on the side sounds like a terrible and unsustainable way to eat, I would argue otherwise. ... Even for those who aren't hugely passionate about bacon and eggs, a ketogenic approach to health and weight is a far better and less terrible way than, I don't know, cutting out half your stomach? Sure, ketogenic diets are less permanent than bariatric surgery, and therefore by definition less "sustainable" according to this surgeon, but other than pure cognitive dissonance I cannot really explain his strong views against keto. The medical and dietetic world need to wake up and see the sheer ridiculousness that is coming out of their mouths! He explained the mechanism of ketosis but goes on to diss it (for some reason) even though its exactly what sustainable weight loss is built upon, with the weight loss industry forever talking about "fat burning". Rather than pull all stops to try and apply a negative filter on keto, why not discuss the merits and limitations in a scientific way that actually provides useful info to viewers? Are we so driven by personal interest and industry bias that we can just ignore science like that?

08.01.2022 Whilst the goal is not to get people competing on ketone readings, we have the runs on the board from both a professional standpoint and from personal experience. One of our directors, Sean, has suffered from Crohns Disease for 17 years. He has had 2 bowel resections and 6 strictureplasties. Needless to say he has been on his fair share of steroids and medication. For about the last 3-4 years he has managed his Crohns on Humira, injecting himself twice a month. However for ...him, enough was enough and he was sick of that dreaded feeling that a flare up was just around the corner. He was always told that diet had nothing to do with his Crohns. Well, 18 months ago he embarked on his own keto journey and to date, he is no longer on any medication, his inflammatory markers are normal and his symptoms are all gone. The cherry on top was also a 22kg weight loss that wasn't even the original goal of doing keto but happened for him anyway. #keto #ketolife #ketogenicdiet #nutritionalketosis #managingcrohns #crohns #inflammation #IBD #ketosis #ketoforlife #metrodietetics #theketoclinic #ketostories #inspiration #ourwhy See more

05.01.2022 REMEMBER THIS ARTICLE? Since we have our Keto Webinar coming up in a few days time, I thought I would re-share this blog we wrote a few months ago on the ketogenic diet. Truth is, even some nutrition experts have it all wrong, and don't really understand keto. ... So, here is it, happy reading!

03.01.2022 WHAT IS A KETOGENIC DIET? I have come across so many articles over the years regarding the infamous ketogenic diet. Some have been informative, some have been speculative, and some have been so riddled with misinformation that I dont know whether to laugh at how comical it is, or cry at how misleading and dangerous it is as dangerous as these people claim the ketogenic diet to be. Recently, I have come across an article in the Huffington Post, discussing the ketogenic diet.... It seemed to be a rather matter-of-fact article, with a prominent Australian researcher dietitian being interviewed. What they failed to mention was that this prominent Australian researcher dietitian has vocally condemned low carb nutrition and the ketogenic diet on multiple occasions in a public forum, and is a staunch defender of the Australian Dietary Guidelines, so I wasnt holding my breath when I read this article. Unfortunately, as predicted, as I read on, more and more problems jumped out at me, and I couldnt resist but put some of these bogus arguments to bed. It confuses me how someone who is supposedly one of Australias leading researcher dietitians can ignore #RealScience in favour of what I can only describe as science that #LooksLikeRealScience but isnt. As per usual, I have quoted verbatim from the original article, and have written a critique in true Metro style. See more
