25.01.2022 This one was a challenge! Enjoy. Lost keys for a 18th Century French Bookcase. Surprisingly not very common key here in Australia. This started life as a fairly simple key and become something else. Lost keys to your unique furniture? Mid-Century, Georgian, French? I’m happy to help. ... #locksmith #antique #melbourne #frenchantiques @roysantiques @miguel.meirelles @tmgloballlll

24.01.2022 Really happy with the silver soldering on these French rim lock keys. Just a little tidying up and they will be ready to send off. #locksmith #melbourne #losttrades @issinstitute

24.01.2022 I love bank security stickers! Back in the days when people got paid in cash and armed holdups were a real threat. Remind me of the CIA security posters from @smithjournal #locksmith #safecracker #melbourne

23.01.2022 Thinking about what to do this March? Well the Lost Trades Fair is on again. See 100 artisans, craftspeople and amazingly talented people. Book your tickets here. https://www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=431320

23.01.2022 In the process of making and installing a new latch return spring the 30 layers of paint was torched. Oops. So it was time to remove all of the old paint. In the process you could see all of the original filing and hand cleaning. Swipe to see more. #locksmith #locksmithing #restoration #oldlocks #nationalendangeredskills #melbourne #losttradesfair

23.01.2022 The Keyhole Surgeon at work. Come and say hi at #losttradesfair this weekend.

23.01.2022 Wonderful to be able to surprise a client with a little bit more. Thanks to the excellent @dovetails_for_diggers for making this special box! It really gave the key some wow factor. #locksmith #Melbourne #kyneton #alittlemore

23.01.2022 Well, it’s our last workshop in Melbourne for 2019, and wouldn’t you know it, it coincides with the Federal Election. So the choice is yours: Vote early; avoid the crowds, burnt democracy sausages and come build a padlock. Alternatively, vote with the masses, dodge the volunteers, buy an overpriced sausage and miss out for 2019. Book in the link. #locksmiths #locksmithing #losttradesfair #auspol #australiavotes #maker #melbourne #hammertime

23.01.2022 Roll top desk locks. Not complicated but tiny little parts get easily broken. A couple of new springs, a clean, a new key (with an extra flag soldered on) and ready to go. #antiques #locksmith #melbourne #repairdontreplace #lock

22.01.2022 Mid century homes can also need the skills of a locksmith. This fine original home in Ivanhoe has loving owners and custodians who see the value in maintaining and preserving. Simpler to remove and replace but is it in our best interests? #locksmiths #losttradesfair #melbourne #midcenturymodern #ivanhoe

21.01.2022 Testing yourself is a valuable activity. Not one I’d recommend when it comes to making keys and repairing locks for a Maserati A6G 2000 Allemano. There are 3 in Australia being restored to their former glory and only 60 in the world. So yeah, no pressure. Well enjoy chassis #2115. These pictures are from http://www.maserati-alfieri.co.uk/alfieri222 and the last one is mine if you want to swipe across. #locksmith #maserati #oldcars #melbourne @ Heidelberg West, Victoria

21.01.2022 I am pleased to say that I have a segment on the 7:30 Report on the @abctv tonight. I think it will be on iview later. I haven’t seen anything but I am sure they have done an amazing job. I wanted to highlight the need for rare and lost trades, our need to preserve traditional trade skills and knowledge. I am passionate about what I do and know that I have much more to learn. ... Many thanks to @issinstitute @gaf_community @abctv @losttradesfair @glenrundellchairmaker @endangeredheritage @oldtreasurymelb @smithjournal @smithymcsmithface and @melbpoly And the many others including @sethgould @greasyluckforge @valentino__mazzoni and @davidappleby #locksmith #melbourne #losttradesfair #heritageskillsinitiative #heritageskills I’ll be cringing every minute. @ Villa Alba Museum (Kew)

20.01.2022 A wonderful and incredibly kind gesture from Tom (with the beard) of coming along for both days of the Bendigo Lost Trades Fair. He was king of the try a lock table and had crowds in awe. He made this a Lost Trades Fair to remember. PS Thanks Bendigo.

20.01.2022 New logo and branding thanks to the wonderful crew @letsbff Unveiling at the @losttradesfair this weekend. Same great people but with a snazzy logo. #locksmith #branding #logo #losttradesfair #melbourne

20.01.2022 1 year ago today I was lucky enough to spend three amazing days in Seville. What an incredible city. A few of my favorite doors, locks and keyholes. <

20.01.2022 What a beauty. Opening and making keys this old French steamer trunk. No photos of the inside yet. #locksmith #antiquetrunk #melbourne #losttradesfair is coming up soon as well! ISS Institute

20.01.2022 Same Cannonball safe from a few years ago but with better light I am blown away by the craftsmanship of these wonderful works of art. Unfortunately, too heavy to bring to the LOST TRADES AUSTRALIA this weekend. #locksmith #safelock #safe #cannonball #melbourne #losttradesfair

19.01.2022 Really excited for this event in Canberra. 13th and 14th of July!

19.01.2022 You never stop learning about things that you are passionate about. This book is invaluable for me and worth each of the many pounds it cost. #locksmith #melbourne #keeplearning See you at LOST TRADES AUSTRALIA in two days!

19.01.2022 First time for everything. I have never opened and partly dismantled an antique National Cash Register before. An incredible piece of manufacturing and a nice challenge. <<< swipe for some more photos. #locksmith #melbourne #antique #ncr #nationalcashregister #cerrajero #llavesantiguas

18.01.2022 Amazing where this job can take you. Recent job at @oldtreasurymelb working in the premiers office. Lovely Hobbs cupboard lock. #locksmith #melbourne #loveyourjob

18.01.2022 A lovey little Yale & Towne padlock missing keys no more. In catalogs from 1893 to 1908. No dismantling required and no damage to 100 years of patina. #lock #padlock #antique #locksmith

18.01.2022 Wonderful sketches! Any ideas where I could get some? Also I’ll be in Canberra next weekend so come along to the Fitters Workshop for a free event.

17.01.2022 Nice little solder and repair job in the workshop tonight. Using Artorch mini from Uniweld. It really has changed my soldering with so much more control and smaller flame. #locksmith #melbourne #repair

17.01.2022 A Gibbons cell lock at the beginning of repair. Swipe across to see the wards and a feature that needs to be lifted by the front of the key to allow the bolt to be retracted. Established in 1827 Gibbons made a wide range of locks and are very well known for locks for asylums and prisons. I believe they can still be found in the remaining parts of Pentridge Prison. More photos to follow of the key and finished lock soon. ... #locksmithing #nationalendangeredskills #locksmiths #losttradesfair #melbourne #pentridge #essendon See more

17.01.2022 So it’s been a while. This is a lock that I had only read of in books. This is a Barrons patent double acting lever lock of 1778. This mechanism heralded a change from the use of wards (originally used by the Romans) to the use of levers. History is motion. Needed a few repairs but lovely to see a patent picture in the metal so to speak. ... Sorry about the wonky video. #locksmith #antiques #keys #locks #melbourne #losttrades

15.01.2022 A lock mechanism that I had only seen in patents and books. The Butters lever mechanism was patented in the early ‘50s for the Josiah Parkes Co in Willenhall. Until the key moves the bolt the stump is completely unable to contact the levers. Slide across to see what I mean. Such a clever idea. Made keys to this and refitted into a wonderful mid century home. #melbourne #mcm #locksmith #losttrades #handtools #nationalendangeredskills #locksmithing

14.01.2022 Amazing partner to explore the @nationalgalleryaus Only 2 more days until the National Endangered Skills and Trades show here in Canberra. Come along and say hi. #canberra #nationalendangeredskills #locksmithing #roadtrip

14.01.2022 Well this is a nice change. For once I just looked in the lock, looked in my bag of old French cabinet keys, pulled one out and it opened the lock. Incredible. Made someone very happy. #locksmithing #goodluck #preperation

13.01.2022 So with a week to go until the last padlock making workshop for 2019 we have a few spaces left. So instead of a democracy sausage come make a padlock. #locksmithing #locksmiths #losttradesfair #melbourne #australianpolitics #auspol

13.01.2022 For all of you that visited us at the Lost Trades Fair in Kyneton we have something for you. $20 discount off your workshop. Thanks for supporting the lost and rare trades and the people that practice and preserve them.

12.01.2022 Hand cutting keys to a hundred year old Chubb safe lock. No tolerance whatsoever. #locksmith #safecracker #melbourne

12.01.2022 Well. It’s been a while. 2020 has been an interesting time. Unfortunately we are located in 1 of the 32 locations in Victoria that will be returning to Stage 3 restrictions. This means that drop off / pick up of jobs will not be an option for the next month. Of course, this will limit our options for onsite visits as well. Hopefully it will only be a month. I know this isn’t much in the global sense but it is disappointing but for the greater good. #locksmith #melbourne #losttradesfair

11.01.2022 R&D with the 3D printer is really hitting its stride. Ross lock with a printed key and a skull soon to be used with an arduino for a robot. #locksmith #3dprinting #melbourne #safelock

11.01.2022 For the many that stopped, watched, listened and asked a thousand questions at @losttradesfair in Kyneton I thank you. In the quiet of my workshop and a few files of the key later it just popped open. That’s why persistence is a necessity in Locksmithing. See you again soon! Maybe in Canberra or Hawkesbury?... Big love to all the #losttradesfair artisans, supporters and @smithymcsmithface and the team at @rundellandrundell #locksmith #melbourne @issinstitute @heritage_skills_initiative @gaf_community @endangeredheritage

09.01.2022 Hi Canberra! Been here for a few days and have had a ball. Now down to business. I’ll be at the Fitters Workshop (next to the Glassworks) in Kingston. Tomorrow and Sunday chatting about old locks and keys, making keys to a few old locks and stuff like that. Come along and say hi!

08.01.2022 Last weekend I was invited along to try my hand at sand casting! What a ball. Swipe to see the finished part. It is going to be a pull handle for a locksmith shop. #sandcasting #hotmetal #locksmith #melbourne #losttradesfair2019

08.01.2022 The Hobbit Door! Created by the amazingly talented George Smithwick, the poster boy of the @losttradesfair and 6th generation master. Genuinely humbled to be a part of this great work. The custom made lock has come up a treat. #hobbit #locksmith #custom #losttradesfair #antiquelock

08.01.2022 #Repost Best Friends Forever New brand identity from Bff for @thekeyholesurgeon, just in time for the #LostTradesFair in Kyneton. There’s a lot more coming down the pipe for this guyfor now enjoy this sneak peek.

08.01.2022 An amazing find in a Maldon antique shop (not mine unfortunately). Beautiful iron work and the springs are incredible. Bought along to my last padlock making workshop for me to drool over. Any ideas on where it was made and when @valentino__mazzoni ?? #nationalendangeredskills #locksmithing #locksmiths #losttradesfair #melbourne #ironwork

08.01.2022 A small selection of work from the last week. Keys made to suit a 17th century French lock and keys made to a espagnolette lock which had to be picked open. #Locksmith #handmade #antique #lostkeys #melbourne #custom #problemsolving #keys

07.01.2022 The lock on the left is to replace a missing lock from a 17th century long case clock. The lock on the right is the original. Doesn’t look like much but represents a new development in my skills. More pics to follow soon after the test fit. #locksmith #melbourne #custommade #handmade #unique

07.01.2022 A wonderful prison lock with a new key. A copy of a Charles Smith padlock (Willenhall maker) made by Harris in Melbourne. The clients story behind this lock is that they worked at the Bendigo Prison as the Health Services Manager when it was decommissioned. For the smooth and successful management of the transfer of the services to Castlemaine prison and dispersal of surplus equipment to other prisons. They were given a (printed) award and a now surplus classic lock by the Pr...ison Operations Manager to remember their work there. They went on being the Health Services Manager at Castlemaine Prison (Loddon Prison) and Tarrangower womens' Prison in Maldon for another 5 years. My story... well in Pentridge the long term visitors learnt that you could tap on bottom of the lock and it would spring open. So instead of throwing them away the used them to secure the cells at night. #locksmith #melbourne #bendigo #prison #antique #pentridge #losttradesfair

06.01.2022 Take a little time and care when opening any lock. A few seconds to tape up around the keyhole can save a lot of pain. Then after a little filing and determination you have working keys. Swipe for more of this amazing mid century Italian drinks cabinet. Call us if you have lost keys to your prized piece of furniture or your movers have. #locksmith #melbourne #midcenturymodern #lostkeys #antique #australia

06.01.2022 Back to The Rocks in Sydney for another 100 years of service. Unique registered design number but no records in the UK archives. Strange but a nice lock never the less. Repaired and new keys made. #locksmith #Melbourne #Sydney #antique #therocks

06.01.2022 Well no wonder the key with no cuts just worked! A couple of broken flags and the ward greeted me. The scar in my hand is from an accident at the beginning of my apprenticeship nearly 14 years ago. Got a matching scar on my arm for the skin graft. #locksmith #repairnotreplace #losttradesfair #melbourne #antiquelock #antiquekey

05.01.2022 Productive evening in the workshop sees this Russell and Erwin Mortice Lock with a new latch spring and hand cut key. Roughly from the 1880’s and manufactured in New Britain, Connecticut it made the journey all the way to Marvelous Melbourne in the Antipodes. This lock should be good for another 100 years or so. #locksmith #cerrajero #melbourne #losttradesfair #handmade #repairnotreplace #schlosser #serruriermetallier

05.01.2022 Milner’s of Liverpool and London. 2 wonderful internal safe draw locks. I had some original mortice keys that I removed the collar and turned into pin keys. Hand cut each of cuts and then you have a working key. These are from around 1889 and still would put up a fight if you tried to pick them open. Swipe to see the anti picking serrations. #locksmith #melbourne #safelock #safecracker #losttrades @ The Keyhole Surgeon

03.01.2022 The slo-mo of a Chubb time lock mechanism is hypnotic. New in box! #chubb #locksmiths #locksmithing #melbourne

03.01.2022 Almost there. Not the most technical key I have made but should look great when it is all done. #locksmith #melbourne #antique #oldkey

03.01.2022 Completed but just waiting for the door. This is the final look of the Gibbons Cell Door lock from the recently completed Essendon Courthouse restoration. Really happy how it turned out. #nationalendangeredskills #locksmithing #locksmiths #losttradesfair #essendon #mooneeponds #mooneevalley
