18.01.2022 The only way to live Adapted from Brene Brown’s book The gift of Imperfection

15.01.2022 Never before has it been more important to be a part of your local community initiatives. 2020 has served us with so many challenges social distancing, closure of businesses, loss of jobs for some and a heightened sense of anxiety and overwhelm!! I’m sure you would agree that it has not been easy for some in the greater Townsville area. The #localssupportinglocals campaign has taken on whole new significance in our lives, as it encourages support of the people and businesse...s in your local areas to help overcome the economic and social impact of COVID. Another area to look at in these times are the people that have become homeless or have the need to become reliant on local charity organisations for help with the basics of life for survival. The Mayor’s Christmas Appeal highlights many of such organisations that give willingly. www.townsville.qld.gov.au/mca/home of their time and resources, manned mostly by volunteers that wish to help another. The Kindness Kommunity (TKK), a local initiative founded by Katie Saint Clair of Townsville, also shares this ethos. TKK has been active in collecting and distributing various items for charities and organisations in the area. Nearly 1000 packs of travel size toiletries have been collected and given to NQ Domestic Violence service whilst through the floods YWAM received over 150 packs. Used magazines have also been paid forward to Aged Care facilities for their occupational therapy classes This year’s festive season project is the Christmas Cheer campaign is focusing on hope, inspiration and encouragement in a personal Christmas card message, written by YOU, our community. It’s so simple, yet so powerful. We provide the card and you provide the message. Your words can make such a difference, creating connections and community. #localssupportinglocals For further information click here https://mailchi.mp/5e5414fae8c2/christmas-cheer-campaign or email: [email protected]

14.01.2022 One day a teacher asked her students to list the names of the other students in the room on two sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name. Then she told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates and write it down. It took the remainder of the class period to finish their assignment, and as the students left the room, each one handed in the papers....Continue reading

10.01.2022 This weeks kindness challenge.. When we do great things, we inspire others to do the same. This task is easy and as always rewarding! We use doors every day. And, inevitably, we cross paths with others using those same entrances and exits. Opening a door for someone, holding a door open for the person behind you, or gesturing another to pass through first, is simple kindness. The etiquette of letting someone else go first is typically taught from a very young age. But... over time many of us forget this simple Act of Kindness If you want to feel calmer, more optimistic, and have improved feelings of self-worth, consider helping others. Remember: small acts of kindness can make a big difference in the lives of others and your own. #smallactsofkindness See more

02.01.2022 This guy is an absolute legend. A kindness warrior making joy for his neighbours. Every night I would get an alert from my driveway security camera, and at first I was a bit annoyed, but then I found myself looking forward to the evening alert. And then inspiration struck, in the form of my wife giving me this great idea. What transpired has turned into the best part of an otherwise dreary pandemic summer.

01.01.2022 Every Sunday morning I take a light jog around a park near my home. There’s a lake located in one corner of the park. Each time I jog by this lake, I see the same elderly man sitting at the water’s edge with a small metal cage sitting beside him. This past Sunday my curiosity got the best of me, so I stopped jogging and walked over to him. As I got closer, I realised that the metal cage was in fact a small trap. There were three turtles, unharmed, slowly walking around the ...base of the trap. He had a fourth turtle in his lap that he was carefully scrubbing with a spongy brush. ‘Hello,’ I said. ‘I see you here every Sunday morning. If you don’t mind my nosiness, I’d love to know what you’re doing with these turtles.’ He smiled. ‘I’m cleaning off their shells, he replied. Anything on a turtle’s shell, like algae or scum, reduces the turtle’s ability to absorb heat and impedes its ability to swim. It can also corrode and weaken the shell over time.’ ‘Wow! That’s really nice of you!’ I exclaimed. He went on: ‘I spend a couple of hours each Sunday morning, relaxing by this lake and helping these little guys out. It’s my own strange way of making a difference.’ ‘But don’t most freshwater turtles live their whole lives with algae and scum hanging from their shells?’ I asked. ‘Yep, sadly, they do,’ he replied. I scratched my head. ‘Well then, don’t you think your time could be better spent? I mean, I think your efforts are kind and all, but there are fresh water turtles living in lakes all around the world. And 99% of these turtles don’t have kind people like you to help them clean off their shells. So, no offense but how exactly are your localised efforts here truly making a difference?’ The man laughed aloud. He then looked down at the turtle in his lap, scrubbed off the last piece of algae from its shell, and said, ‘Honey, if this little guy could talk, he’d tell you I just made all the difference in the world.' Moral of the story always remember there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end. Share this story around as a reminder that no act of kindness is ever wasted

01.01.2022 Like many Aussies, Debbie Hailes has been baking up a storm to pass the time in lockdown. But the Melbourne woman, who has worked in hospitals across the state since the start of coronavirus, had a different mission in mind than satisfying her sweet tooth: cooking for kindness. Since March, Hailes has baked 2,300 cookies, all decorated with a facemask, and created "kits" including a cookie and a heart-shaped blank note so fellow Melbourne residents can spread a little kindnes...s to someone in lockdown. "I work in a hospital and in March and when COVID came, I set myself a challenge to make 1300 biscuits," Hailes tells 9Honey. "I wanted to instil kindness because I believed if we all felt kind, we would all be much kinder to one another." Hailes handed out the first round of her kindness cookies throughout April, but as Victoria went into its second stage of lockdown she set herself another mission to make 1200 more. Recognising the frustrations and boredom people were experiencing in the second wave, Hailes also created activity kits for children in her neighbourhood, including a mask-decorating task and a "red heart to write a letter to your neighbour." Hailes has been working in the public health care system for over two decades as a complaints manager and, put simply, she's "heard a lot" during her career "But I believe if you build a kind culture internally it really exudes externally," she says. As harsh lockdown measures slowly loosen over the state of Victoria, Hailes hopes her cookies provide a little hope to her neighbours, loved ones and patients at the hospital she works in. "It's a pandemic, and anger isn't going to get us anywhere," she explains. "I love cooking and honestly, I am not very good at it but I hope it makes people feel kinder." Hailes says while she's no top chef or crafter, baking has helped her "break the monotony" of isolation. "It just filled my days. Sometimes I'd be cooking for five or six hours!" With her family separated on opposite sides of the state of Victoria, Hailes plans to take a break from baking and reunite with her sisters when lockdown ends. "I'm ready to hug someone," she says.
