24.01.2022 Kin Kin State School's Kitchen Garden programme is one of the many excellent examples of the SAKGF on the Sunshine Coast. So much to love about this school.
24.01.2022 Building community through the preparation and sharing of food is a joy and I know the residents of Coast2Bay Housing Group's Arundell Avenue accommodation complex love our cooking days as much as I. #nambour #ilovenambour #sunshinecoast #communitybuilding... 21.01.2022 The same for gardening. When children grow food at school it is not only about the food. It is the problem solving, observations and understanding of weather and cycles, chemistry, contact with beneficial microbes, failing and succeeding, co-operation, team work and discussions. All this and more. And at the end of it they enjoy a bloody good feed, sharing food with their young and old friends.
21.01.2022 This is a fabulous story of the progress of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation in a secondary school setting. I'm excited to be taking a group of Year 12 St John's College, Nambour to visit the flourishing Chevallum State School gardens in Term 3. I have a four-week project with these students to begin the food-production gardens at St. John's.
21.01.2022 Doing the do today with Coast2Bay Housing Group and their Arundell Ave tenants. First cooking session since December and I can't wait to catch up with everyone there. Bag is packed and ready to hit the local shops for the food supplies. Love buying local fresh produce. #locavore... #sunshinecoast Sunshine Coast Council #nambour #sunshinecoasthinterland See more
20.01.2022 Matt's recent effort in the kitchen produced a delicious lunch.
19.01.2022 First day of working with Year 12 students from St John's College, Nambour on developing gardens at the College. It was an absolute joy to visit the well-established and abundant gardens at Chevallum State School where the students set about understanding the various elements that make up the design and function of a school garden. We also popped into the kitchen to see what the Years 4 - 6 students were cooking. Today's menu was inspired by Caribbean flavours. One St. John's student commented that these Years 4 - 6 students were better cooks than he, and they had a 'great community experience to make friends when meals are eaten as a community'.
18.01.2022 Thanks Coast2Bay Housing Group for inviting me to hang out with your Arundell Ave and William St residents, they are so welcoming and adventurous. Love being part of the team. Each month the residents choose the next menu and today was Sushi. Marinated chicken thigh, avocado, capsicum, cucumber, spring onions and Kewpie mayo. Delicious and plenty to take some home for dinner tonight and lunch tomorrow. First time sushi makers Georgie and Charlotte.... Next month is Tacos: Mexican and Japanese.
17.01.2022 Week 2 with St. John's College Year 12 students and the conversation turns to Legacy. Like everyone, 2020 has been challenging for our Year 12s and they have missed out on many of the usual end of school activities. We checked out the main garden site and also decided that two moveable wicking beds close to the Hospitality kitchens would be ideal start to the project. Creating Legacy gardens has become a bright spark, the students are excited about giving something to the school for nurturing them for the past six years. I was excited to participate in conversations about the best materials for garden beds and how plants take up minerals from the soil. I think I spotted a few 'light bulbs' and was delighted to see that the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation materials are just as relevant to Year 12 as Year 6.
16.01.2022 For those interested in purchasing Sara Breckenridge's beautiful book. https://www.growcookfeast.com.au/
15.01.2022 The sounds of appreciative eating is music to my ears. Great cooking session this week with the residents at Coast2Bay Housing Group's Arundell Ave complex. I think we had a record number of people attending and participating, it was really all-hands-on-deck to prep this much food for lunch. We had Japanese-inspired flavours in our lettuce-wrapped beef and slaw. My family's favourite Nachos with beef n beans, avocado, sour cream and other yummy bits.... Preparing and sharing fresh food is a tremendous community builder.
15.01.2022 The students at St John's College, Nambour created a morning tea feast for our Week 4. Menu: Broccoli & Cauliflower Fritters, Salad of the Imagination, Carrot Dip, Basil and Rocket Pesto, Indian flatbread, Yoghurt dips.... 14.01.2022 Like many of you I've had to alter my direction a bit. In addition to diving into the world of sourdough, I've been broadcasting a new live-stream video called Random Shit in my House. You can find it on Facebook, Youtube and Vimeo under my Stories from the Red Couch banner. Here is an old recipe shared by my Canadian cousin in response to one of our Random Shit episodes.
13.01.2022 Week 3 with the St. John's College students. The site has been claimed, tank beds ordered and irrigation plan complete. This week the students learnt how to build a wicking bed. The plan is to make larger ones for the forecourt of the Hospitality building. Planning underway for the Week 4 morning tea with stakeholders. Using recipes from the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation
09.01.2022 Enjoy this story from Sunshine North Primary School
09.01.2022 Looking forward to leafing through Grow Cook Feast the gorgeous kitchen garden book written by Sara Breckenridge. Sara has long been a hero of mine, starting the kitchen classes at Bulimba State School the same time as I started in the garden at Chevallum. Sara is an incredible cook, gardener and educator and we have worked together many times over the past 10 years. I'm thrilled to have her fabulous book in my collection.
08.01.2022 Beautiful pictures shared by Stephanie Alexander today showing young children serving themselves the lunch they helped to create. Simple idea which has a powerful impact.
