23.01.2022 Alors, c’est la guerre. This brief phrase, Then, it is war, was quickly changed into Oxi, the Greek word for no, by the citizens of Athens. Today we celebrate OXI day (28th of October). We honour the soldiers, their families and all those who fought for freedom... Around the globe, Greeks and non-Greeks commemorate the fallen and celebrate the heroics of Greece and its people.

11.01.2022 Giving away her belongings to the poor she journeyed to Kythera performing miracles along the way in complete servitude to God. Today we celebrate the life of Agia Elessa. "You WILL marry him!" ...... In 1871, a Monastery was built in her honour, her remains lay beneath the foundations; as her father followed and found her on the island because she chose a life of service to God and the less fortunate, rather than Marrying a pagan ruler of her Father's choosing. Elassa was tortured, and eventually murdered by her Father on the site where the monastery was built and proudly stands today. Agia Elessa’s strong but short life is celebrated on the island every August 1st, with a service and Panayiri at the Monastery. We honour her resilience, passion and strength, in a time where belief in ones true self may lead to death. Although her Father forgot his duty to protect his daughter, Elessa's selfless acts will continue to offer protection to those most vulnerable. For she is the protector of Kythera. !

We hope that Covid-19 has not changed the festive period for many of our members and friends. In saying that we understand that for some, it has had a real impact on how many of you/us are feeling. Whether you have been directly affected by the virus, or are struggling to cope with the restrictions, it is important to look after one another; both physically (where possible) and mentally. Pick up the phone, open up a chat, send a text... keep in touch and stay safe.

On our beautiful island each year (24th of September) we honour our lady with a service at the Monastery which was built to honour the Holy image (icon) of Panagia Myrtidiotissa which was found on this very day. ...
