23.01.2022 A wonderful fact about breastfeeding
23.01.2022 Being a new mum can feel very isolating - this year in particular with Covid-19, connecting with others has been extremely difficult. Our thoughts are with all our mums trying to navigate this challenging time, especially to all the mothers in Victoria right now - don't be afraid to reach out for help if you need to. And if you do know a mum with a new baby - check in with her, ask her if she is OK, and give her your support and love.
22.01.2022 The Australian Breastfeeding Association is a wonderful organisation which is there to support our breastfeeding mums and health professionals in the community. This is a very interesting discussion about the benefits of breastfeeding. #theaustralianbreastfeedingassociation #thelactationnetwork

16.01.2022 A great way to feed your baby if they are not latching to the breast.
13.01.2022 Every 10 years, IBCLC consultants from all around the world are required to re-sit their lactation consultants exam - next week it's my turn! I've been busy reviewing all I know about breast feeding and thought I'd share a few insights about the amazing composition and functions of breast-milk. Today, lets look at Lactose :) Lactose actually has some very important functions in breast-milk. Firstly, Lactose is responsible for the rapid rise in your breast-milk volumes. W...hen your milk is transitioning from colostrum to mature milk, the lactose levels in colostrum rise quickly. This rise in lactose causes water to be drawn into the milk making cells of the breast (by osmosis) which then results in copious milk production - cool eh? The other important thing about Lactose is its function to provide energy to your baby - about 40% of the infants energy requirements come from Lactose! When your baby feeds, the lactose in the breast-milk gets broken down into glucose and galactose - both of which provide energy to baby, and in particular, to the rapidly growing infants brain. Galactose is also essential for the development of baby's central nervous system. Many people have concerns about lactose intolerance - the fact is, true Lactose intolerance in an infant is incredibly rare. Adults become lactose intolerant - not babies. If your baby is reacting with frothy greenish poo - they could have some lactose 'overload' - common when the milk first comes in if baby is not draining the breast well (and getting the fatty milk towards the end of the feed). Other forms of lactose sensitivity for baby might come from a gastro illness or food allergy - babies that continue to breastfeed through this experience recover more quickly than if fed by other means. 10.01.2022 Does anyone remember these moments! Our Physio Charlotte breastfeeding her newborn baby with her toddler Ingrid beside her doing the same thing with her baby doll. I love it! Educating the next generation
09.01.2022 So all breastfed babies feed every three to four hours right? Well.....no its not quite that simple! Every mum has a different milk storage capacity - some mums can store large volumes of milk in their breasts, while others (still very normal!) will store smaller volume of milk. A smaller storage capacity does not mean you have a low milk supply - just that nature gave you less space to store the milk. On average, babies will take the same volume of milk over a 24 hour pe...riod from one month of age until six months of age. (This is why we get you guys to work so hard in those first few weeks - to maximise your milk production). A mum that has a larger storage capacity may have a baby that feeds roughly 6-8 times in 24 hours, while another mum with a smaller capacity may find that her baby wants to feed closer to 8-10 times. Another way to think about it would be, say both Anne-Maree and I want to drink 2 L of water per day (geeze I wish :D) Anne-Maree has a 400ml glass to drink from, and my glass holds a 250ml. I am going to need to drink 8 glass's of water to get my 2L where as Anne-Maree will only need to drink 5 glasses...but we both still get our 2 Litres of water in. So, I guess the take home message here is, feed your baby according to their hunger cues - they will tell you when they are hungry :)

03.01.2022 We know that having a breast reduction can impact on breast milk supply. However, we never really know what a mum can produce until she begins her breastfeeding journey. How awesome is this! Well done Tess Louise
