If you want to have a meaningful proposition, you must research your market thoroughly -... Do you understand who your customers are and what their needs are? Who is your competitor and how are they working to satisfy this need? What resources do you have to satisfy this need? Only once you understand the above, will you be able to have a adequately place your product ahead of your competition. So, whats your competitive advantage?

23.01.2022 Todays announcement by Premier Daniel Andrews is a major setback for many Victorian businesses, especially those that are already struggling to survive. The government has, therefore, announced another $5,000 grant to aide affected businesses, in addition to the existing $5,000 business support fund grant, making it a $10,000 grant for metropolitan Melbourne and $5000 for regional Victoria.
23.01.2022 Let's talk about something that a lot of business owners find uncomfortable - Service Payment Imagine buying a monthly supply of grocery, would you expect to walk out of a supermarket - with groceries - without paying for them? What about when you get a massage or a new haircut? You would probably be expected to pay right? So as a service business owner, why would you be shy of asking for a payment? ... You work extremely hard and you deserve to be paid. Is it because you think that you charge too much? Or are you scared that customers will turn away if you advertise your price upfront? Or are you scared you won't make any sales unless you give away freebies? BTW, you'll have plenty of opportunities to give freebies but that's another discussion altogether. Personally I think advertising your prices and setting the expectation upfront about your fees is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY and I'll tell you why - 1. It shows that you mean business 2. It vets out prospects that are after freebies & leaves you with only the serious buyers, hence a better use of your limited time & resources 3. It articulates the value & importance of your time If there are clients that have payment issues, by all means offer flexibility, but make sure you clearly set the payment terms before initiating the work. Pre-payment of service, part or full, is also widely accepted so don't be shy asking before you commence a piece of work. Remember - your time & service is valuable!

19.01.2022 This week my family and I are celebrating Diwali. Diwali, usually known as the Hindu equivalent of Christmas, is the biggest festivity of the year for Hindus. It is a celebration of new beginnings, a family reunion and triumph of good over evil. According to Hindu scriptures, it is the day that Lord Ram returned home with his wife (Sita) and brother (Lakshman), after 14 years in exile. Welcomed by fireworks, candle-lit houses, to a feast & celebration, Diwali commemorates ne...w beginnings & a family reunion. During the exile, was also a long battle between Ram and Ravan (who abducted Sita), and this is where the celebration of good vs evil roots from. The war was symbolic in many ways and here is one that I would like to share with you. Figuratively -----> - Ram represents us as human beings - Sita is the human spirit that is captured by Ravan - Ravan, who was said to have 10 heads, represents the 10 negative emotions in one's life - Ego, Attachment, Regret, Anger, Hatred, Fear, Jealousy, Greed, Lust and Insensitivity - And the war? The war represents the fight we go through each day, to free ourselves from the negativity and the emotional baggage we carry. To me, Diwali is a significant occasion - both religiously & symbolically, and also an annual reminder that truth & goodness prevails. That said, I would like to wish you peace, good health and ample love this Diwali!

19.01.2022 Lets talk about relationships. A common mistake most business owners make is to continually sell, without actually listening to what the client needs. Continuing selling yourself in every call and every networking isnt just draining, is also deters from actually building a meaningful relationship with your client. You would see a lot of companies, giving out a free initial consultation. This helps in 2 ways - it helps you to screen each other for business synergy and also ...an important foundation to building a healthy professional relationship. Similarly, if you walk into a networking event with the focus of just winning business, you will put unnecessary stress on yourself and are less likely to achieve anything. So next time you go to a networking event or meet someone, dont just sell. Listen and work on building that relationship - It may be more meaningful in the long run, than just a quick sale.

14.01.2022 Here's a little something I've learnt about networking. There are 3 types of networkers - 1. Ones that are nervous & very uncomfortable with the idea of networking 2. Those that go in with the mission of handing out business cards & running a sales pitch marathon 3. Those that focus on building a relationship... Be the 3rd one! In face-to-face environments - focus on the other person, their business and their challenges. That gives you leverage on what to focus on, hence creating a proposition that is really valued by the customer. Groups are also great for networking. Being an active participant showcases your knowledge and allows others to understand what value you can add, without the need for a blunt sales pitch. p.s. I also started off as a one, as do most small business owners, and worked my way up to three.

12.01.2022 Want to achieve a competitive advantage in business? Theoretically advantage is achieved in 1 of 3 ways - 1. First to market an innovative product/service 2. Price 3. Product differentiation ... In reality, it should be a combination. Product pricing is reflective of the product quality and if you are focussing on quality, you are really focussing on achieving a point of differentiation. Very rarely can businesses sustain on a price point alone. But differentiation doesn't just come in the way you configure a product, it is usually part of the bigger picture. Differentiation can also be achieved in the way you deliver your customer service. To understand what your customers really think about your product/service, consider: - Frequent feedback - Mystery shopping to experience the service first hand - Develop a customer journey map to understand your service pitfalls, and work ahead to resolve them.

09.01.2022 When it comes to service marketing, its all about your brand. And as a small business owner, this brand and the product is usually you. So ask yourself the following: Check - What values do you stand for AND what do you want your brand to stand for? Is there synergy in the two? Check - What image do you portray AND does it match the type of clients you attract or would you like to attract? ... Check - Can your customers relate to your persona? Check - Do you come across as approachable, accessible and professional? A good example of this is LinkedIn marketing. When you approach unknown prospects on LinkedIn, your profile photo and CV are what determine whether or not they will connect with you. Your confidence and knowledge are the reasons someone will place business with you. And your professionalism and service determines whether they will repeat business with you. So make sure YOU, in professional events, and your profile on social forums represent what you want your clients to relate to.

05.01.2022 If you're not on Google, do you even exist? Yes, Google is the quickest way for your clients to find you but Google works like the old-age Yellow Pages. Thank you to Google's complicated algorithms, you will only be found if your clients know they're searching for you. (Unless of course you've mastered the art of SEO and Google Ads to feature on page 1) Nonetheless, listing your business on Google, and regularly updating it with useful content, should be an important part of your online marketing strategy.

04.01.2022 Lets talk brainstorming! Whether it is a business idea, a project, or something as simple as tasks that youre looking to outsource, the process usually always starts with a brainstorm. Brainstorms are a great outpour of information in your mind. A great tool for formalising and structuring this information is Mind Maps. Mind Maps help you to visualise your thoughts and build relationships between thoughts, much like Affinity Maps do. ... To do this effectively, you start with a Central Idea, say starting a cafe. You will then list all the associated tasks in the bubbles next to your central idea. For example, physical cafe premise, business registration, council permits, website, marketing strategy, etc. For each of these 2nd level items, you will then drill into more detail. For example, for the physical cafe premise, you might start listing all the associated items - decor, space size, outdoor seating, coffee window, etc. For marketing you might write social media marketing, collaborations, etc. And so on, until you get to a point of clarity and bit-sized actionable tasks. Mind Maps are a great way of identifying information, breaking them down an action list and also a great starting point for your business plan.
03.01.2022 If youre feeling overwhelmed with the idea of pivoting your business, heres some motivation for you. If there is something we can learn from the last GFC, it is that it gave birth to several great organisations. How? The GFC gave an opportunity to businesses to review their business models, reinvent themselves and create products/needs that didnt exist at the time.
