21.01.2022 In honour of my mum & my cat Titus, on International Cat Day
19.01.2022 Eminem lost his enstranged father this week. ‘I needed to grieve, not for the man, but for the relationship that never was...’
19.01.2022 Yesterday did a ‘Self-Isolation’ shop, and no, I’m not ashamed. Through the chaos of Sunday shoppers at my local Woolworths, I stocked up on three and a half weeks of essential items: One week of my normal groceries; two and a half weeks of non-perishable essential stuff for my cat and myself; a few treats; some yoga DVDs and a couple of new books. The truth is, Coronavirus is real and things are going to get worse. I don’t think we need to panic, but we do need to prepare.... And today, I did exactly that. I prepared. But, I didn’t do it all for myself. I did it for my friends, my family, my workmates, the staff at my local cafe and my local gym, I did it for my neighbours who I wave to every morning even though I don’t know their names - and I did it for you too. And you should do the same. This apocalyptic, ok that may be a little dramatic, but this virus, COVID-19 will likely touch most of us, some much worse than others. I may get sick, but my lungs and body are young and healthy enough that hospitalisation will be unlikely necessary; however, for my senior Aunty, my asthmatic work friend, the immune compromised kid down the road, and the homeless man who sleeps on the street it’s a whole different prognosis, and it’s not pretty. It’s actually really scary. So, let us be both smart and selfless: Stay home when you can; avoid group gatherings; only purchase what you need; if you can, donate to homeless charities; be kind; pray; and wash your hands like someone’s life depends on it - because the truth is, it does. Sending lots of love, prayers and healthy vibes your way ~ Perfect love casts out all fear
17.01.2022 From the age of 8, this little boy knew that he would end up incarcerated. And at the age of 13, he was. Like Toy Soldiers ~ Eminem
15.01.2022 It looks like I’ll be out of action for a little while, well, at least until I learn to type only with my left hand... Lots of love
14.01.2022 Huge shoutout to the Police on The Central Coast Highway who pulled me over for an RBT yesterday. They were so lovely and funny! They were, jokingly, giving the young guys in the car behind me a hard time for using a cable tie to hold up their number plate, Geez mate, I hope that thing [the cable tie] isn’t holding the whole car together! It actually got me thinking about all the times that the NSW Police Force have gone above and beyond to help me out over the years. ... I remember one day, I was driving down the M7 in Richmond. I was transporting an echidna and the sneaky critter escaped from the carrier and climbed under my seat. I was driving alone and being the middle of summer, I was wearing thongs - yeah, had he have gotten under my feet, I would have crashed, for sure. Now, anyone who has ever tried to pick up an echidna would know that it’s not an easy task. So, here I was pulled over on the M7, trying desperately to get this echidna out from under my seat, when Highway Patrol arrived. The officer, who though it was hilarious, used his baton-thing to poke the escapee from under the seat and I was able to grab him. The policeman then made sure the carrier was secure before I drove off; he then went on to create a break in the busy traffic so I could pull out onto the road! He didn’t have to do that. Another time, I was pet sitting in the Camden area and the owners of the pets, who were on a flight to Bali, had forgotten to leave the keys out for me. It was early evening and I had no clue what to do - the poor dog and cat were locked inside the house! So, I called the Police to see if they could help me out, and they did. They came over and checked the property and then gave me a document to give to a local locksmith, so I could get into the house and feed the fur-kids. They didn’t have to do that. Lastly, years ago, I was working at a vet clinic on the North Shore and a young police officer came into the clinic with a tiny kitten that he had found near the meth clinic in Sydney. He decided to keep the kitten and he called it Smacky! He didn’t have to do that. All this to say: Police aren’t bad. Yes, the guy and his mates who killed George Floyd are bad, but not all cops are like them. Most aren’t. Unfortunately, we live in a world where EVERY people group is tainted with evil, but there’s a lot of good out there too. We are humanity ** The RBT photo isn’t mine.
14.01.2022 What a pleasure it was to write this piece. Kay’s story is inspiring, but you’d best get the tissues ready
13.01.2022 Our gorgeous Dottie, the 15 year old, endangered green sea turtle who, after 10 months of being in care, is finally back in the ocean where she belongs. We love you Dottie
13.01.2022 For those who don’t know, Bushfire Season in Australia has started early this year, and so far it has been nothing short of devastating. But then, there’s people like this... As I humbly served them hot meals and a cuppa, I’ll never forget the smell of smoke that itched my throat; nor the exhaustion which was laced with strength upon their faces. The faces of volunteers, of those who have made a conscious choice to fight for people they don’t even know. The famous mateship of... my home country, Australia. But mostly, I’ll never forget her; Fiona, a long serving NSW Rural Fire Service Volunteer, oh and she’s a grandmother too! She carried with her grace, courage and wisdom that I can only pray I will one day carry too. Do I know what political team she bats for? No. Did any words of blame come out of her mouth? No. Would she have been justified if they had? I don’t know. But I do know that blame and judgment are part of a very toxic worldview; and these soldiers, our soldiers, are fighting a battle with weapons of love and courage - and they are giving it all with absolutely no agenda attached
12.01.2022 Yesterday, I had the privilege of being involved in the release of Dottie who is an endangered green sea turtle. It was stunning If you love animals please follow our page SASH - Small Animal Specialist Hospital
11.01.2022 Helping people to share their stories through written words is one of my favourite things to do. John’s journey has been one of perseverance, overcoming and giving back. Don’t forget to watch the full interview with the amazing Dr Emma Davis from Veterinary Careers.
09.01.2022 The ocean can be a harsh place for marine creatures - especially when they’re not feeling well. Meet Dottie the Green Sea Turtle; Dottie has been in care with Australian Seabird Rescue Central Coast since August last year. She was found floating listlessly at Wangi Wangi on Lake Macquarie. Sadly, Dottie was hit by a boat, resulting in a severely fractured carapace (shell). Sea Turtles are surface-breathing marine animals and are often injured or killed by speeding vessels whe...n coming up for air - in this case, 15 year old Dottie was lucky to be alive! During an initial assessment it was discovered that poor Dottie was also suffering with pneumonia. Fast forward six months, and thanks to the wonderful care of local veterinarian, Dr Johnathon Howard and the team at Australian Seabird Rescue Central Coast, our local Green Sea Turtle is well on her way to recovery. However, Dottie’s recovery has not been without roadblocks: She recently visited us at SASH - Small Animal Specialist Hospital on the Central Coast for a CT Scan - and I was privileged enough to be her anaesthetist and nurse. The scan was requested due to a build up of internal gas which is dramatically affecting the way she swims. Australian Seabird Rescue Central Coast founder, Cathy Gilmore was so thankful that Dottie could be scanned and diagnosed right here on the Central Coast, We really didn’t want to travel with her [Dottie] even though she’s been in care for a long time, she’s still a wild animal and she gets very stressed. The fact that the amazing team at SASH in Tuggerah were happy to scan her made it so much easier for us. Dottie has been diagnosed with a plural effusion, or water on the lungs; but now that a diagnosis has been made, she can again, ‘Just keep swimming..’ down the road to full recovery.
