10.01.2022 Do you ever have conversations that feel like they’re going nowhere? Or a conversation that just feels too difficult to have? What we often don’t realise when we’re faced with these types of conversations is that something is missing a key ingredient, trust. Yes, we all know trust is important in our relationships, but do we really think about it when we’re in conversation?... How many times have you had a frustrating conversation where someone: Had strong opinions and has not been open to your point of view Appeared sceptical, doubtful and judgemental Waited for others to put forward their thoughts before committing their own Trust is a driving factor in our conversations and when it is low, or conditional it makes us retreat, and feel the need to protect ourselves. We go into a state of ‘fight, flee, freeze or appease’. But when trust is high, our brains detect that we’re safe, and we feel more open, positive and able to connect with others. This is where our prefrontal cortex is able to access empathy, and higher decision making - also known as, the ability to have conversations that work! 04.01.2022 Feeling overwhelmed, or drained? It is normal and ok to move outside of your ‘window of tolerance’ sometimes. Things like stress, feeling unsafe, and big changes can cause your window of tolerance to shrink. One way to tell that you may be moving toward a fight/flight or freeze state is when you don't quite feel comfortable, but you’re not out of control yet. Noticing how you’re feeling at this early stage gives you the chance to bring yourself back into optimal arousal. ...At optimal arousal we can learn, cope with challenges and manage our emotions. We are engaged, alert, and can perform tasks at a high level. Ways you can bring yourself back into optimal arousal: Mindfulness Grounding exercises, like tuning into scents and sounds Listening to music Exercising Countering negative thinking with positive thinking When we give attention to our emotional state our capacity for self-regulation, self-compassion and compassion for others deepens. We also become better at handling the pressures of life, and are easier people to work with and live alongside! So, what about when you’re dealing with someone who is outside of their window of tolerance? Signs of distress in the freeze state (known as Hypo Arousal) include: Decreased responsiveness Inability to say no Disassociation Feeling of shame Signs of distress in the fight/flight state (known as Hyper Arousal) include: Hyper vigilance Cyclic thinking Visible agitation Anger Trying to engage people in conversation when they’ve moved beyond their capacity simply doesn’t work, it’s best to take a break and re-engage after the person has had time to self regulate. Remember that emotions come and go, how you respond to your emotions and to others who show signs of distress matters. We’re all in this together! Window of tolerance: developed by Dan Siegel
