24.01.2022 "Weight management is not a behaviour," ......but rather an outcome of multiple behaviour changes." A great line from the article below and something I completely agree with. My current "philosophy" (not sure I'm clever enough to have a philosophy but stay with me here) on health is that it's determined by four key areas of your lifestyle: what you eat, how (and how often) you move, your sleep quality and how you manage your stress (or what your mindset is like). Just as you ...can't drive a car well on three inflated, balanced wheels while the fourth drags along behind, getting all elements of health attended to is the only way for sustainable health (including weight loss). At The Lean Maze it's our job to help you work out what your needs are across all these areas. When all four wheels are rolling, they'll take you wherever you want to go! http://www.smh.com.au//is-this-the-missing-link-in-weightl

22.01.2022 Can't agree with the opening line of the article condemning 2016 entirely (surely some good stuff happened for the author too!) but a great list of things to consider adding or removing from your life in 2017 to make you healthier and happier. (Note how getting more sleep, doing resistance(strength) training and cutting back on sugar all made the list.....). http://www.huffingtonpost.com.au//50-healthy-resolutions/

19.01.2022 Ok, so maybe it won't cure MS or halt symptoms but I bet everyone trying this protocol feels, moves and looks better.... http://www.msn.com//multiple-sclerosis-doctors/ar-AAonatT

18.01.2022 There's No "One Size Fits All" But..... We're all different, there may be many similarities on the surface but the further you drill down, what will work for one person and speed them towards optimal health will bring someone else undone. At The Lean Maze we're all about helping people find their own path to health, the best mix of those variables that will have them looking good and feeling great. One thing that is true for everyone though is that we all need to move (exer...cise), every single day. I'm sitting down to write this, you're probably sitting down to read it, but after we're finished, it's time for all of us to move! http://www.smh.com.au//f/born-to-move-20161129-gt0frc.html

18.01.2022 Or You Can Skip To The Last Paragraph....... Interesting article attached but if you're pressed for time, just read the last sentence about the future of healthy eating trends (something about whole foods and vegetables, again). To complete The Lean Maze recommendations, just add some sort of exercise every day, make sure you're sleeping well, manage your stress and you're away. http://www.smh.com.au//the-top-five-nutrition-trends-for-2

18.01.2022 It's Never One Thing..... I like the analogy of your health being like a brick wall. The wall is the result of many bricks, carefully laid while your health is the outcome of the countless decisions you make through the day on how and when to move, what and how much to eat, what mechanisms you use to cope with stress and what importance you're placing on your sleep. Some time back my reading about the amount of sugar in our western diet had me convinced that sugar alone wa...s the culprit of our obesity epidemic (check out the article below for more on this) but look around and you'll see many people who don't move enough through their regular day, enjoy too much poor quality food (or have it too regularly), wear their level of busyness or stress like a badge of honour and have no exercise regimen. A lot of little changes and improvements add up. What does your wall look like.... http://www.smh.com.au//focus-on-sugar-to-prevent-obesity-a

17.01.2022 Just One Thing To Add..... The only thing missing in the article below is a bit more content on shifting that focus solidly onto what your body can do. Can you squat your own body weight, can you do a few chin ups, what about push ups on your toes, can you knock out a half dozen (and yes I'm talking to you ladies!). Get in your cossie, get down the beach and into the water (come and join me for some physical/mental therapy at the Haven one morning), then get to work on makin...g sure that fantastic being that is you is strong and moving as it should! http://www.huffingtonpost.com.au//you-already-have-a-bik/

12.01.2022 If you’ve come across the term adrenal fatigue and googled it, you’ll find as many articles warning of it’s impacts and treatment as you will declaring it doesn’t even exist. The article at the link below is a good summation of both the for and against camps. At the end of the piece though is a great paragraph under the heading Does it matter what we call it? Managing your stress, prioritising sleep (amount and quality), getting your nutrition right and exercising are... key and there are few people who wouldn’t endorse looking after these issues. I’ve slowly come around to adopting the concept of these four areas (exercise, nutrition, sleep and stress/mindset) as being the Pillars of Health. If you’re not feeling 100%, have a think about which area is flagging and attend to it. Who cares what you call it, it needs fixing! http://www.smh.com.au//is-adrenal-fatigue-real-forget-the-

11.01.2022 "Doctor, I'm worried that I'm eating too many vegetables, I just don't feel well" - said no one ever.... Come and be a rebel, an individual, an outlier and join the 20% of Australians who eat at least the recommended serves of veges and fruit in a day. (Do yourself a favour and bin that vegetable peeler too, all that awesome fibre is in the skin, you need that stuff!). http://www.msn.com//four-in-five-australians-n/ar-BBzeRVn

11.01.2022 Everyone has a path to health, a lifestyle that is good for them (not a "diet" or quick fix that get's amazing results only to lose those results when you return to the previous way of living). The trick is to work out what your sustainable, palatable, enjoyable solution to living well looks like. Abstinence of some of those guilty pleasures might work for some while moderation is the key for most of us. Whatever your path is, it won't be complex or earth shattering but a ...combination of exercise, eating nutritious foods (and plenty of it, we're refuelling a healthy, happy, active human, not starving ourselves thin), sleeping well and getting our stress levels under control. The difficult bit is working out what will work, once you have that, you'll be amazed how easy great health is. Go find your way out of the health maze.... http://www.smh.com.au//how-peter-fitzsimons-quit-sugar-and

10.01.2022 Bad news for people who don't like resistance training - it's good for you! Get strong, put on a little muscle because the list of reasons it's good for you just keeps growing. http://www.smh.com.au//the-science-of-strength-seven-ways-

08.01.2022 Awesome Article, although the title needs adjusting! An interesting read and I especially like the closing statement about morphing from concern about how your body looks to focussing on what awesome stuff it can do (or will be able to do with the right training and mindset). For my money though it goes way beyond the differences between the genders, how you train, eat and live should be customised for you and everyone will need something slightly different. Using a sensible... starting point like eating plenty of whole foods, moving every day, getting at least a couple of resistance training sessions in a week, sleeping well and managing your stress is a great place to start but you'll need to experiment to find what works and keeps you happy doing it. http://www.smh.com.au//why-women-need-to-train-differently

08.01.2022 Discipline Equals Freedom (Jocko Willink) A paradoxical concept? Jocko explains .if you want freedom in life be that financial freedom, more free time, or even freedom from sickness and poor health you can only achieve these things through discipline Notice he doesn’t mention being motivated. You don’t feel psyched, excited or motivated to shower, brush your teeth or pay for car insurance, you do these things to be free of tooth decay, body odour and financial hard...ship. The same goes for things like eating well and exercising daily, don’t wait for the day you wake up "ready", start doing it and make it a behaviour you no longer need to think about. Getting healthy habits entrenched takes effort, if you’d like some help, give us a call at The Lean Maze.

07.01.2022 Strong is..... Yep, it sure is nice to look good and it's a big reason a lot of people exercise. Switch your sights on getting strong though and feel your world change. You might be sweating up a storm, breathing like a freight train and have hair plastered across your forehead but you won't give a damn how you look the day you punch out your first chin up, knock out a set of strict form push ups or realise you just squatted your own body weight. ... Being handsome or pretty can be genetic, a gift you take for granted because it wasn't earned. "Looks" are easily enhanced, made up, retouched, botoxed or created with fancy clothes. Being strong is a great leveller and can't be purchased, fabricated or stumbled onto, everyone has to earn it. Well worth the investment though, the confidence and pride you'll get from feeling powerful will make the short bursts of discomfort it cost you a cheap price to pay. Strong is beautiful, confidence boosting and awesome! http://www.huffingtonpost.com.au//ronda-rousey-proves-st/

06.01.2022 Stuck for Christmas Present Ideas? No idea what to get someone in your house this year? No problem. Wait till everyone has gone to bed on Christmas Eve, sneak around and gather up everyone's joggers, wrap them up in one massive package and leave them under the tree. ... In the morning, insist that "the big one" is opened first. Now, while everyone in the family is fixing you with, "the look" , don that training footwear and get everyone outside (quick, do it now, it's going to be another baking hot Aussie Christmas!). A ten minute jog, walk, shuffle or round of squats or lunges in the driveway all count. Now do whatever you want for the rest of the day, you've exercised and given two of the best pressies ever, a hands on lesson that we should and can, exercise every day. The other, that Christmas lunch, consumed in the knowledge you exercised today, tastes even better. (You've also earned yourself the mantle of "weird relo" but that can be fun too, lap it up!).

05.01.2022 Good health is like a brick wall - a big impressive thing made up of many small parts (in the case of the wall, thousands of bricks laid straight, in the case of your health, lots of good decisions about how much to move and what to eat). http://www.huffingtonpost.com.au//why-too-much-sitting-d/

05.01.2022 A common reason people have for not getting exercise is that of time. Parents know there’s a lot of racing around with kids but look carefully and you’ll find plenty of time to squeeze in some activity around their commitments. I’ve taken to showing up at young Charlie’s swim lesson with a thick exercise mat ($12 at K mart) and ankle weights ($29 at Rebel) and for less than $50 I’ve got a killer mobile gym. In under 45 minutes flutter kicks, weighted leg raises, weighted pla...nks and side planks are more than enough to make me feel I’ve ticked off my daily exercise (and at The Lean Maze that’s something we advocate for everyone). Add in a $20 resistance band and the exercise options are endless. I’ve exercised, drawn bemused stares from the other parents and entertained and astounded the little kids waiting for their siblings, everyone’s got something out of it! See more

03.01.2022 NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Check out the article below. Did you ever see the animated kids movie (was it Wall E?) set in the future where all the humans are massively obese, floating around on transport devices with robots delivering everything to them so they never have to move, did you see that? It's coming true! Get out there and move everybody and you can carry your own stuff!... http://www.huffingtonpost.com.au//vespa-has-created-a-ro/

03.01.2022 Data suggest that "there is no one-size-fits-all approach to exercise," A line from the attached article which is an interesting little study I haven't read about before. It's not much of a surprise to learn all of us will benefit from exercise, casting around though to find what works for you best is key to improvement (and improvement is the reason we'll all stick with it). Find something you're good at and guess what, you'll enjoy it and it will become part of your sustai...nable, enjoyable, healthy lifestyle. I've discovered I'm a calisthenics loving swimmer with lots of enthusiasm (but no talent) for surfing and stand up paddle boarding (don't ask me to run though or I'll run away). If you need help to work out what get's you working out, give us a call at The Lean Maze. http://www.smh.com.au//is-your-workout-not-working-2017010
