09.01.2022 Are you worried about your performance at work? Are you getting a ‘vibe’ that all is not as it should be? ~ Time to clear the air: Ask your manager if they have 30 minutes to chat. Depending on your concerns, you could say I’d like to have a chat about my performance recently, or I’m sensing that you’re not happy with my work, or I’d love to get some feedback about how I’ve been going on the last couple of months.... Go in with a list of where you think things have been going a bit pear-shaped: beside each, list a potential solution to work through with your manager. Solutions could be: requesting more detail on the work before you start; asking for feedback part-way through; more training. Take notes during the meeting, and follow up with an email to your manager summarising the chat/ outcomes. ~ Don’t wait until a formal review to do this: feedback should be an ongoing process, and nothing to be afraid of (though toxic work environments are another issue). ~ I’d love to hear your work performance stories: have you approached your manager for feedback in this situation before? Be really clear with the person you shadow that you want to learn/ see in action x, y or z. Bring something to table: how will they benefit? Set clear parameters with your current and shadow manager in terms of duration and time commitment (and it is a commitment).
