23.01.2022 We dont even know what skills may be needed in the years ahead. That is why we must train our young people in the fundamental fields of knowledge, and equip them to understand and cope with change. That is why we must give them the critical qualities of mind and durable qualities of character that will serve them in circumstances we cannot now even predict. John W. Gardner 1961. Are you equipping your students for the future? #excellenceinVET #innovation #opportunityforpractice #thelearningcommunity #johnwgardner

16.01.2022 We are moving away from teaching things that readily become outmoded, and toward things that will have the greatest long-term effect on the young persons capacity to understand and perform. Increasing emphasis is being given to instruction in methods of analysis and modes of attack on problems. In many subjects this means more attention to basic principles, less to applications of immediate practical use. In all subjects it means teaching habits of mind that will be useful in new situations curiosity, open-mindedness, objectivity, respect for evidence and the capacity to think critically. John W. Gardner (1973) This is still an important message today. Are you teaching this way in your RTO? #excellenceinVET #innovation #opportunityforpractice #thelearningcommunity #johnwgardner

16.01.2022 Wishing you a peaceful and safe Christmas season. We will be taking a break, switching off and having some tech free time. See you in the new year #lookafteryourself #takearest #celebratetheyear #play #thelearningcommunity

16.01.2022 Back in 1973 John Gardner said ...much education today is monumentally ineffective. All too often we are giving our young people cut flowers when we should be teaching them to grow their own plants. We are stuffing their heads with the products of earlier innovation rather than teaching them to innovate. We think of the mind as a storehouse to be filled when we should be thinking of it as an instrument to be used. It is still so important that you challenge your students to innovate, develop skills and knowledge and provide opportunities for them to apply both skills and knowledge in realistic workplace situations. #excellenceinVET #innovation #opportunityforpractice #thelearningcommunity #johnwgardner

13.01.2022 Change is so swift that the latest thing today may be old-fashioned by the time young people enter adulthood. So they must be taught in such a way that they can learn for themselves the new things of tomorrow. John W. Gardner (1973) This is not just the case for young people. Our whole workforce must adapt to the changing technologies and must develop resilience, flexibility in the way work is performed and the analytical skills to allow innovation on the job. #excellenceinVET #innovation #opportunityforpractice #thelearningcommunity #johnwgardner

13.01.2022 Most people dont really need to have their ideas adopted in order to buy in to a decision. They just want to have their ideas heard, understood, considered and explained within the context of the ultimate decision Lencioni 2007. How do you involve your staff in continuous improvement? #proactiveapproachtocompliance #continuousimprovement #auditisnotadirtyword #thelearningcommunity #theessentialguidetobuildingasuccessfulrto

12.01.2022 Do you like giving and receiving feedback? Some people love it, other people avoid it. Our students NEED it. And as Ken Blanchard reminds us, feedback is the breakfast of champions. And despite this being a pretty corny quote, it reminds us that success often comes from perseverance and the daily practice of refining our skills and working towards our goals. Feedback can provide the encouragement and support students need to keep them working towards their goals and the tweak...ing and the guidance they need as they learn new skills and knowledge. In our next webinar we talk about feedback and why useful feedback is so important for students. 05.01.2022 If we indoctrinate the young person in an elaborate set of fixed beliefs, we are ensuring his early obsolescence. The alternative is to develop skills, attitudes, habits of mind and the kinds of knowledge and understanding that will be the instruments of continuous change and growth on the part of the young person. Then we will have fashioned a system that provides for its own continuous renewal. John W. Gardner (1973) This is still a challenge for us today and the VET sector is well positioned to do this. 03.01.2022 The end of the year is fast approaching and and its good to make time during the busyness to reflect on the year that is flying past and to consider what has been accomplished before jumping into planning for the year ahead. But if you are planning for 2020, make sure you put the student experience at the centre of your planning. Involve your whole team in discussions about what went well this year and what needs to be improved so they will engage in the steps to be taken next year to improve and ensure quality outcomes. #reflectivepractice #goalsetting #prioritisation #thelearningcommunity
