03.01.2022 HANDS UP if you turn to caffeine-therapy when you are feeling tired!!! In a world where there is always something to be working on, no matter what time it is and this can leave us relying on a quick pick me up or a quick caffeine-boost to help us remain focused. As much as I love coffee over-consumption of caffeine has been linked with some not so great outcomes including;... - Gastric upset (such abdominal pain and diarrhoea) - Increased anxiety levels - Poor sleep quality Here are our tips for enjoying a cup of coffee while minimising the downside: 1. Only drink it when you need it - Remember it is a stimulant and should be used for that purpose. If you are just wanting a warm drink- try a herbal tea instead 2. Limit daily caffeine intake no more than 400mg/day (1 shot of espresso = ~100mg caffeine) 3. Leave a window of at least 4 hours between any caffeine and bed . Remember caffeine can also be found in: Tea Energy drinks Soft drinks Chocolate Caffeinated snacks Like and share with a friend who loves their coffee! #coffee #caffeine #stimulant #healthbenefits #healthconsequences #dietitian #nutritionist #sydney
01.01.2022 Good Food = Good Mood. There have been various studies showing that a high-quality diet can play a crucial role in improving mental health and preventing mental illness.... The SMILEs Trial is an example of a study that showed the profound impacts that a healthy diet can have on mental health. The study recruited participants from the community who reported depressive symptoms. Those allocated to the dietary intervention group met with a dietitian for dietary education, support and counselling and were encouraged to follow a modified Mediterranean Diet. At the end of the three month trial period, those in the dietary intervention group saw a significant reduction in their depressive symptoms compared to those in the control (who only received social support, no dietary intervention)!
