25.01.2022 The sound didn’t pick up so well, which is a shame as I would have loved to have shared it. I was sitting in my greenhouse when a noise caught my attention. It was a loud and awesome hum, something I haven’t heard in a while. I look up into the gumtree above my head and there where thousands of bees happily buzzing along. It’s such an awesome sound. Glad it’s back hopefully a positive indication of what is to come.
25.01.2022 If you have a moment please have a look at the Therapist with Hooves page. Christies does amazing things for our elderly community . like and share if you like what you see, these are tough times for those in business at the moment and any little thing we do can help.
24.01.2022 As some of you may already know when it comes to harvesting honey I do it by hand. Now, when I say by hand I mean gloves on and many pots and strainers, three or four days (and that is only for ten or so frames) and me trying to squeeze the life (honey ) right out of the wax and then letting it drip into the settling tanks. It’s a long messy process. I decided to invest in an Electric extractor, put your frames in turn it on and BAM honey is quickly extracted, runs out of t...he frames down the sides of the tank and quickly and smoothly pours cleanly into the waiting pail underneath. This is a photo of my electric powered extractor. As you can see by electric I actually mean hand cranked turns out a decent electric extractor is a little out of my price range so I got this beauty. And of course I got it in red because as everyone knows red goes faster. Comb goes in the basket, crank the handle and the honey is pressed out with hopefully not too much mess into a bucket bellow that hopefully I won’t bump out of the way while honey pools all over my nice clean floor. Don’t ask how I know that this would be something I do Eventually I’ll get a little manual extractor to spin honey out of the frames. The resulting stickies (frames with honey extracted but still with wax comb) can then be put back into the hive for the bees to clean and reuse, this allows the bees to use them sooner and they don’t use up resources to build the wax cells to store the honey in. Should edit to shout out to Bec’s beekeeping in Victoria. She helped mark conspire to get this up here for my birthday
24.01.2022 Trying to keep the sun off the hives. The shade cloth isn’t ideal. Need something a little stronger for all these hot days.
23.01.2022 Just a quick shout out to Boxa greens that services the Hill area. If you are in the hills and looking for some great fruit and veg, have a look at what Racheal has to offer. Personally I think the boxes are great value. Even if you just follow along for the great recipie ideas
21.01.2022 Stay safe and cool today. Did all my yard work earlier today. Covered all the hives with shade cloth. Hopefully it will reduce some heat for them. The sound in the hive is like a wild freight train as thousands of bees beat their wings in a frenzy to keep the honey from melting. The life of a bee is hard work.
21.01.2022 Our current project. Building a long hive. It’s a bit of an experiment. I have been looking into them for about 6 months. The build is taking longer than we thought. But, I think it will be worth it an the end and I’m pretty sure it will be quite educational. Suzie is only 9 and wants to be a beekeeper, my hope is that she can learn to handle this hive without the heavy lifting. Still needs a roof and venting, I’m really looking forward to getting this up and running.

05.01.2022 Small jar of honey as a gift for a friend.
03.01.2022 Listen to those birds! Every day for the last two weeks they have spent time in the eucalyptus with the bees. They are hard to identify as the are so small and high up. But, they do appear to be a type of lorikeet. I was trying to video the garden and got distracted by the noise. Must admit the garden is a little too quite when they fly off. Though I am sure the bees don’t mind when they do
03.01.2022 It’s here! After much practise whipped/honey is ready for sale. 320g $10. I only have a handful of them for sale
02.01.2022 Another fascinating Bee. Interestingly there a few insects that feed of orchids that blow your mind.
01.01.2022 Just a selection of flowers in the garden that the bees have shown some interest in this week. I have been working in horticulture for about 17 years. The bees feed my obsession with plants and gardens not sure if it’s a good thing or not. I’m swiftly running out of room to grow in, I have been warned no more gardens my reply but, it’s for the bees his fine edited to add if you add a few drops of peroxide bleach and a teaspoon of honey cut flowers last longer.
01.01.2022 Bees were a little sleepy this morning
