There’s no denying the digital world has been a blessing and a curse. Tech CEO Tim Kendell urges everyone to put down their phone, reminding us just how dangerous a place it can be. He speaks about the positive and negative impacts technology has; reuniting famil...y & building businesses & connections. But the dark side of it has spiralled out of control. From the exploitation of users for financial gain, data mining, fake news and political polarisation, to how apps and algorithms are designed to feed into human addiction, and the effects of social media on ones’ mental health. Depression, anxiety, suicide rates and mass surveillance have been increasing for decades. Fake news has been a thing since as far back as the 1800s. But evidence suggestions, even though it travels 6x faster, most people who read/share these types of stories don’t actually believe them, they’re just trying to score points for their ideological team. [The Cognitive Science of Fake News] There are big problems with social media and technology. But the complexity of them makes it hard to just fix what’s broken. So what’s the solution? They don’t really give one. But the only way to cut the surface of the issue is to take a proactive approach. What started out as an online profile to showcase my creative work turned into a fully functioning business. 12 months ago I chose to take TLT further. I resigned as the Senior Content Writer at my corporate job and replaced the ridiculously long hours and regular paycheck with smarter, healthier work ethics and better flexibility to do what I love for businesses I believe in. It was one of those decisions I wish I’d made earlier. Like quality web copy though, good things take time; and this adventure was well worth the wait. But it wouldn’t be possible without some very special humans. My husband Rob for supporting my decision, working his butt off at his own job to help make it happen and listening to my endless supply of ideas and questions. Being a creative himself, he’s also my second set of eyes and is my top critic because he knows exactly what I’m capable of. My dad for his support, fatherly advice, passing on his business knowledge and guidance when I’m lost in paperwork and numbers. Pauline; my editor, mentor and friend for believing in me, always lending an ear to unravel project challenges and making me a better word wizard.
