25.01.2022 Looking out to Mt Hay Like the pull of an irresistible addiction, certain parts of the Blue Mountains are an addiction for me. We all have favourite sights smells places that offer comfort and support in times requiring some personal peace. Travelling out of Blackheath on the road that leads to Hat Hill with a vista of Mt Hay offers a centring of purpose and calm for me as an artist. Look it says, stand there quietly and remember all the times youve been, collate them all... and viewing my magnificent vista draw the essence of me if you can. So I return again and again to find the essence. And try to make it mine. And I will continue to return to do so in the future. Im addicted. 23.01.2022 In my first year of teaching at Macksville High School I had a classroom experience that has stayed with me. In recent weeks and looking at the marches over the weekend and listening to the political commentary I felt compelled to tell my story. It wasn't till years later someone told me about the work of Jane Elliot, I know from this experience how powerful the experience was for us and how confronting her work could be for some members of her audience. 18.01.2022 The Covid19 series of work doesnt sound very attractive as a title for an exhibition. Because its not. But I do think when they are exhibited as a body of work at The Art Vault in Mildura in November a far more fitting exhibition title will be found. But for me right now as we all deal with the uncertainty and unease of this time the soft colours and gentle tonal combinations coming out of my heart onto the canvas cheer me up. 18.01.2022 Another in the Covid19 Painting series in situ #inthestudio Love my messy #paintingwall When I started using the wall I had back and shoulder problems. I had to strengthen my back muscles @torquepilatesstudio and learn to lift heavy canvases properly be able to use #thewall without injury. This is the review position, with the #paintings still on the wall there is always the chance the painting process could be continued- or not. 15.01.2022 Early mornings and late evenings the flock of sulphur crested cockatoos fly amongst our trees at home. They are raucous and I welcome their noisy visits. I delight in them. My father passed away 10 years ago and I was going to give the eulogy at his funeral. I had written the eulogy but needed to practice it so I would be able to hold it together on the day. I went up to the corner of our large garden and as I started to read it a flock of sulphur crested cockatoos circled... above screeching and swooping. I read the eulogy aloud, with tears streaming down my face, the visitors adding their vocal support, they were my audience and Dads messengers. I loved them being there and laughed as Dad was a reserved English man. And as I finished reading the cockatoos whirled away. For me now the sulphur crested cockatoos are Dads birds, if you wish his totem, so every time they visit I think immediately of Dad and thank them for taking the time to come. This morning it was the wonderful small splash of red on the expanse of grey driveway. A quiet morning with time to reflect and ponder. To sit with the chooks as they peck and chatter around me and admire their fluffy bums as they sedately walk into the distance. 13.01.2022 Having to go to #sydney for a dental appointment in #macquariestreet decided to check out the #hydeparkbarracks it has a great #atmosphere you can immerse yourself in the history. Rats ever present at the barracks helped conserve fragments of history and the preserved remains are part of the exhibition. Fascinating. I thought, analyzed, and decided maybe .... so I did something on it the night that I posted and then again today. So if you liked it before in preference to this, because you've checked both posts, I'm sorry. Its still there just underneath the present painting. But I rather like it now because it's balanced a bit more and the focus is a little different. ... Thats the trouble with the painting process its always forward after the acrylic paint dries. No going back. Which can be fun. Now the trick is, for you as the viewer, is what have I done? So Ill leave it with you. 08.01.2022 Lets put it all in context. I had a small canvas 30cm x 60cm that had been started and I put the canvas aside. Being in my lets not go down the rabbit hole frame of mind I put it on the wall once more and continued. It was a muted painting when I set it aside. Maybe I did set it aside because it was muted. And when I continued painting it I realised I should continue using the tonal qualities colour offers with the painting. ... I had to walk away at times as I had an urge to whack some bright colours and bust it open. I restrained myself. The painting may continue to evolve. Just saying. But this curious time we experienced was after, whats been quite a year, particularly for those living in close proximity to the bush. Many will relate. 05.01.2022 I have come upon the dangerous disease that occurs when looking at art on social media. It is the tendency to run down the mental rabbit hole of comparing your own work with others. The wondering is exacerbated by the unique times we live in and the greater reliance on social media more now with Covid19. I have come to recognise I suffer this malady at times and while in this state I feel I should be producing, proving my worth with greater quantity and quality of work.... When this occurs now I sit myself down have a chat to myself that I need to travel my own path, reflect and think it through quietly, usually in the studio. And after such consideration I take out a canvas or paper, place it on the studio wall and just paint. Loud music or none. I reaffirm to myself the joy of making the mark, the line, mixing and using the colour. To play within the abstract world of my visual life, creating not for the approval of others, to create without restraint or inhibitions. And the work when I do I look at it later it says yes found something there and it pleases me. 03.01.2022 I realised just before I painted this work that I needed another painting so when I packed paintings for the #exhibition I had the right number to pack them face to face and back to back. I had enough paintings for the exhibition. It would be an extra. So I put a canvas on the #studiowall and with the exhilaration of completion I exuberantly got into the process. Then I stopped and realised I’d come to a point where it was finished or was it? If I continued I would lose it. I... took a walk in the garden. I pondered the situation and then I rang through to @theartvault and spoke to Mia. Think it’s finished. Not sure about it. It feels raw and expressive. What’s your opinion? Sent an image to her. Got a message back - love it! So I walked away.
