19.01.2022 We're starting to get restless! It's this time of year when #OrangebelliedParrots can be expected to arrive at their breeding grounds in Tasmania. Data from 195...9/60 onwards shows October is the preferred month for first arrivals - but the last four seasons have seen the first sighting of an #OBP at Melaleuca as early as September 9 - 23. That's now! They have to obey their ancestral urge to breed, and to do that, they must all migrate across Bass Strait to southwest Tasmania. At the end of the 2019/20 season, 118 OBPs departed Melaleuca for the mainland. According to recent data on survival rates, we may see between 25 and 47 return. Wishing God speed to our wonderful OBPs Photo: unusual view of an OBP by David Stowe

09.01.2022 I expect Barbara Wilson and the first group of volunteers, Julie and Rodney, will see some OBPs at Melaleuca soon after they commence observations over the next... couple of days. I also predict silver/red M and probably silver/black Z will be among the first OBPs to make it back this season because they were sighted at Swan Bay, Victoria 10 days ago - the traditional congregation point prior to making the 1-2 day migration to Melaleuca. Silver/red M will be in his 11th year and is one of the last of the 900+ Orange-bellied Parrots I banded and probably the last of the truely wild birds (ie no captive genes). Silver/black Z is very distinctive because he suffered a major scalp injury in the nest so he has no feathers on his crown. It’s amazing he’s survived so long.

08.01.2022 The Lobster Ponds are happy to advise we will reopen THURSDAYS and FRIDAYS again starting this week. Hours will be 10am to 3pm Thursday till Sunday. Lobsters were out and about in the ponds at the weekend!

08.01.2022 Today's Sunday drive is driven by a 'Spring Offering' from the north west of this marvelous state! Wynyard is home to the magnificent Table Cape, a sublime plat...eau that sits 180 metres high, overlooking wynyard's stunning coastline and rolling hills. The 12 million-year-old volcanic remains are a natural wonder that offers jaw-dropping panoramic views, that on a clear day stretch all the way to George Town - see if you can spot the lighthouse! A unique seasonal experience awaits at Wynyard. In spring a patchwork of vibrant colour burst across the rolling fields as Tulips bloom across acres of land at the Table Cape Tulip Farm. Be sure to pay a visit to this spectacular corner of Tas - especially in Spring when the landscape comes alive with vivid colours! 01.01.2022 More good news from the field! As of 22 October, 16 Orange-bellied Parrots (7 males, 9 females) have returned to Melaleuca. These include 7 wild-born birds over... one year of age that have successfully migrated in previous years; 2 wild-born juveniles that were head-started in their first year and have now completed their first migration in their second year; 2 captive-bred adults released at Melaleuca in previous spring releases (one from Priam Australia, one from DPIPWE), and 5 juvenile release birds (1 from 2019 juvenile release from Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park, and 4 from a 2020 juvenile release from DPIPWE and Healesville Sanctuary). Further wild returns are expected throughout October and November. DPIPWE released 12 Orange-bellied Parrots at Melaleuca on 6 October 7 males and 5 females from Moonlit Sanctuary and Adelaide Zoo. A further 9 Orange-bellied Parrots were released late last week 5 males and 4 females from Werribee Open Range Zoo and DPIPWE. A third release is planned for late this week and will aim to balance the sex ratio after further wild returns.
