20.01.2022 One of our running clients, Mark Avery, is running 1000km from Tweed Heads to Sydney Opera House in twenty days to raise funds for mental health. Mark is a great guy who has found running to be a huge benefit to his mental health. He has been preparing for this 1000km run for 3 years, so it is not a project he has taken lightly. He is a huge advocate of using running to help deal with mental health issues, and he wants to be able to help other people through raising money for... Gotcha4Life. You too can help by creating a team and taking part in a virtual relay. This should provide great running motivation and raise money for a good cause at the same time. How does it work? - The challenge is to collectively run, walk, or crawl 1000km over 20 days as a team - Teams can be any size. For example, a team of 10 equates to each individual moving on average 5km’s a day over the 20 days - Challenge starts Mon 26th October and finishes Sat 14th November - To take part in the challenge they are asking for a donation of $35 - All of this donation (less a small transaction fee) goes to Gotcha4Life to run workshops in schools and clubs in the community. Take on the challenge. Register here: https://tweedheadstosydney.raisely.com/ #keeptheconversationrunning

14.01.2022 I was lucky enough to take part in the Stromlo Running Festival 2020 in Canberra on the weekend. It was my first running event for 2020, and it was exciting to be standing on a start line again. They had 10k, 30k and 50k distances available with the field at full capacity of 1800 runners.... The race organisers did an amazing job of spreading the field into waves of 100 runners and holding the 10k race on the Sunday to further separate the runners and comply with all of the Covid and social distancing restrictions. Running legend Rob De Castella who is co-founder of the Stromlo Running Festival was the MC, welcoming everyone to the event and sending each wave of starters on their way. It was inspiring listening to him talk and hearing how passionate he is about running, the local Canberra community, and using running as a means to create resilience and strength. This experience brings hope that we will see a lot more races returning next year. Race organisers are doing a wonderful job of providing a safe, fun and enjoyable race experience working within the scope allowed by the ongoing pandemic issues. It was great to see so many Locker Room members out on the course. I hope you all enjoyed your race weekend. #run #trailrunning #outdoors

14.01.2022 The Coastal Classic is a race which attracts road runners and trail runners in equal numbers. It is a bit like the 6 Foot Track in that respect, and one of the reasons I enjoy it so much. As a trail runner it is always good to be able to pit yourself against the roadies to find out where you stand in the strength vs speed stakes. With two weeks to go to this year's event, this description will give you a first-hand account of what to expect come race day.... https://www.tbmlockerroom.com/coastal-classic-course-descr/

13.01.2022 Avoid Injury By Foam Rolling Your Quads Foam rolling is a great way to "self massage" your body. Some people respond better to foam rolling than to stretching, others find that stretching works best. There isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to successfully managing your body. If you suffer from tight quad muscles, if you have knee pain, or if you have ITB related symptoms, then foam rolling your quads properly should help to reduce your symptoms.... Watch this video to learn what to do, and what not to do when foam rolling your quads. 13.01.2022 If you are training for the Coastal Classic in December you ideally need to incorporate some sand running into your training program. If you are new to trails or haven't spent a lot of time running on the sand I recommend starting with one sand running session per week. Start with 10 x 100m intervals at an easy (aerobic) pace on soft sand and slowly build up the volume each week until you are running 2km - 3km in one session. 10.01.2022 Thinking of entering the Ultra Trail Australia 11km? This course is mostly stairs. It has an elevation gain of 560m and something like 4500 stairs! Because it is relatively short, and because you don’t have to run down Kedumba, putting in some serious stair training sessions will help a lot if you are intending to race rather than finish this event. This 5 min video clip will give you a very good idea of what to expect. The course and views are spectacular.... https://thebodymechanic.com.au/uta-training-when-where-and/

08.01.2022 Sally is a runner who has recently experienced an ITB issue (pain around the outside of the knee). Initially this pain came on towards the end of a 20km run, she rested a couple of days and then ran again but this time the pain came on after 12km. Does this sound familiar? Sally then decided to rest for 3 days to really let it settle down but unfortunately during her next run, the pain started at 5km and became so painful that she had to stop her run early and limp home. He...r knee felt like it had a knife sticking into the side of it. Finally, coming to terms with the fact that her knee wasn’t going to improve without doing something proactive, Sally booked in for a massage and reluctantly resigned herself to three full weeks of no running. She did some swimming and some boxing classes during the break from running to try and maintain some fitness, and to prevent her from going mad! Do you think you know what happens next? Did she choose: A - Improve her running technique, or; B - Rest some more and then ramp up the running again. https://www.tbmlockerroom.com/how-to-return-to-running-aft/
