19.01.2022 HAPPY INTERNATIONAL DAY OF RURAL WOMEN On this day, we recognise and celebrate the contribution women make to our rural sector. Having fought their way into the industry, women today make up 41 per cent of the agricultural labour force and are becoming increasingly prominent in representative bodies. ... Today, the Leader looks back at an article published 20 years ago - October 13, 2000 - on Longreach Pastoral College students Amanda Dunn and Kristy King. "Life in the bush demands endurance, a fighting spirit and sometimes blind dedication, but on World Rural Women's Day thousands of women and girls will be celebrating their love of the land," the story reads. "And Miss Amanda Dunn and Miss Kristy King are two girls determined to make their mark in the rural industry. "Miss Dunn, a second year Diploma student, was awarded first year Dux of Longreach Pastoral College this year, based on her academic results and practical skills. "She can repair a tractor or weld a steel panel as quickly and as effectively as any man, and backs up this ability with her financial and management skills." Miss Dunn said in the article she one day wanted to manage her own property. "Since I was a small fry following Dad around our property near Coolabah in north-west New South Wales I've known that my place is in the rural industry," Miss Dunn said. "In my mind, there's no doubt of a prosperous future for the rural industry" Kristy King, from Mudgeeraba, called herself an urban girl with a passion for the bush. "When I finished Grade 12 at Nerang High I decided to take on a jillarooing position on a Northern Territory property and loved this experience, however I realised I needed to develop my skills to succeed in the rural industry," Miss King said. "I enrolled at Longreach Pastoral College, and I've so far learnt leatherwork and book-keeping, mustered cattle, shorn sheep, built fences - I've done so many different things!" ________ While there have been many changes within Queensland's rural sphere within the past two decades - the strength of character in our women remains the same. Today we celebrate all of these women - "May we know them, may we be them, may we raise them." BELOW: Longreach Pastoral College's Kristy King and Amanda Dunn, with Kristy's working dog, Elmo.

02.01.2022 Wool away! Yesterday, our journalist Edwina Watson traveled to Sandy and Amelia Williams' Rosedale Station for Day 4 of the Novice Sheep and Wool Training Clinic hosted by RAPAD. The accredited training program took place over five days in Longreach this week, and covered all aspects of animal welfare, handling and husbandry, shearing and wool handling and classing.... As Western Queensland's prized sheep and wool industry makes a resounding comeback, iconic shearer "Tolly" Bowden was thrilled to see fourteen young people enrol in the course. "Once, shearing was the only job available to a young bloke in the West," Mr Bowden said. "When I started out, there were 17 teams in the area. "I've gotten a lot out of shearing in my lifetime, and it was important to give something back. "These men and women have done an excellent job this week." For Edwina, the day in the sheds also offered exclusive bragging rights... Coming from a family of longtime woolgrowers and shearers in NSW, she can now claim to be the first to 'shear' a sheep north of the border. She's just thankful it wasn't a ram! See the full story with photos in your copy of next week's Rural Leader.
