19.01.2022 My 2nd Covid-19 swab test in a week with more to follow. I think I’d rather have a fall off my bike than that bloody thing stuck way up my nose after just having a nose operation to straighten the septum, but I guess on a positive note there’s plenty of space now for it to be stuck up there. 5 days into hotel quarantine, the food is outstanding, hotel staff very polite and accommodating, and a beautiful view over the city. 15.01.2022 The tradition of Remembrance Day evolved out of Armistice Day. The initial Armistice Day was observed at Buckingham Palace, commencing with King George V hosting a "Banquet in Honour of the President of the French Republic" during the evening hours of 10 November 1919. The first official Armistice Day was subsequently held on the grounds of Buckingham Palace the following morning. During the Second World War, many countries changed the name of the holiday. 13.01.2022 Day 5 TLRH Spring Ride Cuballing to Brookton... On the Great Southern Highway Highway today after a overnight stay in the Cuballing Tavern. Short 20km legs through some historical towns after Cuballing such as ;,Popanyinning and Pingelly where we pulled in for a short break after riding into a strong head winds on route Brookton today. Popanyinning; The name means "water hole" in the local Noongar language and was first recorded in a survey in 1869 for a pool in the Hotham River, and was previously spelt "Popaning" or "Popanying". The first pioneers arrived in 1893, mainly railway construction workers and their families, and the town became one of the original sidings on the Great Southern Railway. In 1903, the State Government had a few lots surveyed at the siding to meet the needs of local settlers, and in 1904 the townsite was gazetted. Within two years, 72 families were living in the district and the town was an agricultural trading post where settlers could buy supplies or conduct business with incoming or outgoing railway traffic. The Popanyinning Hotel was built in April 1906, and many small stores operated nearby. However, the town did not grow after the 1920s, and on 9 July 1978 the hotel burnt down, never to be rebuilt. Pingelly; The town was originally a railway siding along the Great Southern Railway line, built by the Western Australian Land Company, and opened in 1889. Later the same year the company designed the town and made land available. In 1896 the state government purchased the railway and the land and gazetted the townsite in 1898. Its name is Aboriginal in origin and is the name of the Pingeculling Rocks found to the north of the town. The name was first recorded in 1873, and the original settlers referred to the area as Pingegulley for years before the town was gazetted. In early 1898 the population of the town was 89, 52 males and 37 females, however this isn't accurate, as this does not include Aboriginal people. Between 1939 and 1941 three motor racing events were held annually in the town, using a circuit which went in a clockwise direction. The last event, won by Harley Hammond in his Marquette Special was the final motor sport event held in Western Australia before racing stopped due to World War 2. Brookton is a town in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, 138 kilometres (86 mi) from the state capital, Perth via the Brookton Highway where it crosses the Great Southern Highway. The town is on the Great Southern railway line. It is within, and is the seat of government for, the Shire of Brookton. At the 2006 census, Brookton had a population of 576. 03.01.2022 Day 2 ; TLRH SPRING RIDE Heading away from the WA Coast today towards the hinterland and into the Jarrahdale state forest via Pinjarra on stage 2 of the long ride home spring ride. Ian Rasmussen and Gil Brown both veterans ( Aussie & Kiwi ) an Anzac team lead us out to Pinjarra before they both headed back home to South Yunderup. ... An unexpected left turn into Pinjarra to take us on a ticky tour through the war memorial park and amongst a whole bunch of artists out painting the beautiful landscape in and around Pinjarra township a highlight of the trip today. A quick breather in Pinjarra before saying good bye to Ras and Gil and after a fantastic night at the home of Ian & Rhonda Rasmussen where a mixture of older and new veterans got to talk about their time in the army. This to me was a part of what my good American veteran Josh Collins talks about; Connection is a cure Josh survived a bomb blast in Afghanistan and is now connecting with other veterans as part of his healing process. Thanks Ras for sharing your stories and experiences last night. Nice to have you and Gil join us for part of the TLRH Spring Ride and see Jack Singer there to meet us in South Yunderup. A warm welcome on arrival at the R&R Veterans Transition Centre by the full time manager Allan Ingram and his assistant Ty Ahrens both veterans who settled us in for a good nights rest before a long riding day in stormy conditions ahead . 03.01.2022 Day 3 TLRH Spring Ride The TLRH spring ride team headed out in some light rainy conditions and hilly terrain more into the Jarrahdale state forest after leaving the R&R Veterans Transition Centre today. In saying that, it didn’t take long to warm up as we started up some steep inclines which got the heart pumping and provided the necessary blood flow into the legs.... It’s a long weekend here in WA and that became apparent once we came out of the forest and hit the Jarrahdale - Albany Highway T junction. A big stream of traffic seen crossing in front ahead before we turned right amongst it all on the Albany Highway heading to Wandering via North Bannister. Rolling hills tested the legs as mentioned but tomorrows rest day will fix the aching muscles in the small country town of Wandering. A couple of talented veterans in the group who took their hands to helping a stranded couple on the side of the Albany Highway whilst riding along. Some quick running repairs to the under carriage of their car much to the delight of the owners before getting back into the saddle onwards to North Bannister. A surprise for the group as we hit North Bannister when running into an old mate and veteran Ross Jones. Ross and his family now reside on a farmer in the Wandering region. A welcomed lighthearted chat with Ross before the lads headed off and away from the busy Albany Highway and onto a back road and a nice downhill run through some beautiful parts of the WA crop region to Wandering for that well earned rest day. On ya Ross !! Thank you for the chat and nice to meet you and the family in North Bannister. Ahead; Rest day tomorrow after approx 220 kms over the last 3 days. 02.01.2022 From Wendy Button Secretary for The Long Ride Home Patron General Michael Jeffery. It is with a very heavy heart that I write to advise that General Jeffery passed away peacefully at home, at dawn today, Friday, 18 December 2020. We were fortunate to be able to celebrate his 83rd birthday with him last Saturday with a glass of champagne and a lot of love and laughter.... He was an exceptional human being who will be missed tremendously. He has touched so many lives during his life and I know each of you has special memories of times shared with him. Be sad today but then focus on all the good things that he has done for his country and know that his was a life well lived. Rest in Peace. 01.01.2022 Day 6 TLRH Spring Ride Brookton to York... Out in the drizzling rain and headwinds to York today to approx the 420 km point of the ride and to what has been a fantastic journey with war veterans / riders Rosco, Mark, Wes and Kerry. We’ve ridden as a team left no man behind, supported each other all the way and pushed the awareness of PTSD amongst veterans , first responders, and the wider community .......Well done guys !!! On arriving York today we were greeted by veteran Roger Croucher who lives in York. I haven’t seen Roger in 40 years but he was kind enough to take care of our very needs for an overnight stay in York before our final leg to Mundaring tomorrow. York is the oldest inland town in Western Australia, situated on the Avon River, 97 kilometres East of Perth in the Wheatbelt, on Ballardong Nyoongar land, and is the seat of the Shire of York. The name of the region was suggested by JS Clarkson during an expedition in October 1830 because of its similarity to his own county in England, York County. After thousands of years of occupation by Ballardong Nyoongar people, the area was first settled by Europeans in 1831, two years after Perth was settled in 1829. A town was established in 1835 with the release of town allotments and the first buildings were erected in 1836. The region was important throughout the 19th century for sheep and grain farming, sandalwood, cattle, goats, pigs and horse breeding. York boomed during the gold rush as it was one of the last rail stops before the walk to the goldfields. Today, the town attracts tourists for its beauty, history, buildings, festivals and art. For a town of its size, there are more heritage buildings in York than in any other town in Western Australia. not only that, the entire town has been declared a "Historic Town" by the National Trust of Australia. The streets of York are lined with buildings both big and small that evoke the essence of the nineteenth century. The main street, Avon Terrace, remains almost exactly as it was in 1911, the year that the spectacular Town Hall was constructed. But behind the main street lie a wealth of historic houses and cottages and places of interest each with its own story and of the generation of people who lived in them. A nice town to visit and rest up before riding on tomorrow. For those people like Roger who’ve supported veterans on this ride I’d like to say as I’ve done all the way through the spring ride from start to the finish thank you for supporting other veterans who are doing it tough from their time in service. Warmest Regards to all, Truck Sams, Rosco, Mark Hardy , Wes Brumley & Kerry Riley On The Long Ride Home Spring Ride 2020
