23.01.2022 Everyone has their own personal Everest, ours happens to be that the fan on our oven busted 3 years ago and we're bloody minded and won't give up on it. 22.01.2022 Happy fathers day to everyone except ScoMo. A father who is happy to let other people's children languish in detention centres is no father at all. Fuck him, fuck Murdoch, burn it to the ground.

20.01.2022 UPDATE: Romero Centre has now had over 20 offers from potential volunteer delivery drivers, which is amazing! Thank you! So no need for anyone else to email the...m about helping with food deliveries, but if you have any leads on the other question of childcare support, do get in touch. Remember, you can also donate to support the organisation via this link: https://romero.mercycommunity.org.au/donatenow/ One-off donations are great, but recurring donation commitments will allow them to reduce their dependence on government and other charitable funding sources, thus allowing them to become more vocal and effective in their advocacy for refugees. ORIGINAL POST: Two requests for help: As some of you would be aware, there are dozens of asylum seekers living in our community long-term who aren’t eligible for any financial support from the government they don’t get housing or Centrelink payments or anything like that (some of them aren’t even eligible for public healthcare and subsidised medicines). Many of them have managed to find work (often in underpaid and exploitative conditions), but there are still quite a lot of asylum seekers who are reliant on food handouts. So the Romero Centre has been organising a weekly food program on the smell of an oily rag that’s feeding a lot of people. They’re currently in need of a few more volunteer delivery drivers. If you have a car and license and some free time on Tuesday evenings, they’d love to get two or three more people on the roster who can consistently commit to picking up food from their kitchen in West End around 6:30pm each Tuesday, and deliver it to various locations around the inner-south side. You’d have to cover your own costs for petrol etc, but if you’re looking for a straightforward way to support some of the most vulnerable members of our community, please let the Romero Centre know. The easiest way to volunteer as a delivery driver is to email [email protected] (make sure you include your phone number). The food program also always welcomes food donations so feel free to email about that too. Another big need in the refugee support space is access to childcare. There are quite a few single parents who aren’t eligible for government-subsidised childcare and have young kids to look after. Their visa conditions allow them to work, but you can’t usually take your child to work, and childcare is insanely expensive. This is probably a big ask given how difficult it is to find childcare centre places (even when you can afford to pay), but if there any community childcare services that have the capacity to offer a free place to an asylum seeker child, this would make a massive difference to quite a few families. If each childcare centre around the inner-city could accommodate just one extra child for a couple days per week, that would make it a lot easier for their parents to find some paid work. If you’re part of a childcare community network that might be able to offer support, please email [email protected]
