17.01.2022 We're continuing to highlight some of the collection works which are currently on display in 'YOUR COLLECTION: yapang'. This painting by Douglas Archibald was produced as part of the artist-in-residence project and exhibition 'To the point of Marmong' held at the Art Museum in 2008. The project came out of a desire to record the site as it was being investigated with a view to future development. ... Rather than exploring the landscape directly, Archibald created studies that convey the ways Marmong Point is used by human and animal life. The sense of activity created in his painting contrasts with the idea of contemplation that is seen in his other studies of human use of the same place. 17.01.2022 We're celebrating the final days of 'Reconnected' with the exhibition set to conclude this weekend at MAC. This artwork titled 'Wangi Power Station Ruins' is the work of artist Thelma Wawrzonek and one of the brilliant pieces on display in the exhibition. From the artist: 'Eerie. A great industrial monstrosity, reminder of former coal burning to generate electricity. It stands derelict and abandoned and fenced off on prime lakeside land. A place which once was home to the A...wabakal people. 'From 1958, it thrummed with workers as the largest power station in NSW. Now the place is left to fall into ruin and decay. The weeds grow. Light shines through the broken roof rafters. 'The chimney stacks tower to 76 metres. I tiptoe amid broken glass and graffiti on walls. History stands silent. What will happen now to reconnect the place to the land and community?' Image: Thelma Wawrzonek, 'Wangi Power Station Ruins' 2020, ink and watercolour on paper.
