25.01.2022 I want to tell you all how much I ADORED Betty by Tiffany McDaniel. Betty is a hymn to life and the enduring tradition of storytelling with a narrator as indelible as Scout Finch. It is fiction that swallows you up and leaves you changed from the opening words: A girl comes of age against the knife. Fans of Where the Crawdads Sing and The Vanishing Half will love this and I will certainly be pushing it into your hands! Born in a bathtub in 1954 to a Cherokee father and wh...ite mother, Betty is the sixth of eight siblings. The world they inhabit is one of poverty and violence - both from outside the family and also, devastatingly, from within. When her family's darkest secrets are brought to light, Betty has no choice but to reckon with the brutal history hiding in the hills, as well as the heart-wrenching cruelties and incredible characters she encounters in her rural town of Breathed, Ohio. Despite the hardship she faces, Betty is resilient. Her curiosity about the natural world, her fierce love for her sisters and her father's brilliant stories are kindling for the fire of her own imagination, and in the face of all she bears witness to, Betty discovers an escape: she begins to write. A heartbreaking yet magical story, BETTY is a punch-in-the-gut of a novel - full of the crushing cruelty of human nature and the redemptive power of words.

We’ll also be extending Thursday & Friday closing hours closer to Christmas as soon as that mad rush for Christmas pressies begins! Please don’t forget to support local when doing your Christmas shopping. 15.01.2022 Did anyone else LOVE The Paper Bag Princess growing up? It’s one of my all-time favourite picture books and I’m so happy to see it in print again

15.01.2022 Heading into the Christmas market, Ive been curating quite a few book lists for schools at the moment. These are some of our favourite picture books right now. Schools, teacher librarians dont forget we have a shop now, pay later option (payment terms 30 days from delivery) and we offer discounts for school accounts. I know quite a lot of school budgets are coming to an end for the year so if youre looking to top up while you can, feel free to send us an email at [email protected] for our current top ten list in any age range or category. We can also post out copies of our Spring Reading Guide which will soon be available! Were looking forward to being out and about at schools and businesses over Book Week and Christmas. 2020 has been a scattered year but the one constant weve found is the joy in pairing books with readers and promoting access to good quality books by some very, very talented book creators.

11.01.2022 Should we order this great literary work in?!

11.01.2022 We are so excited to have our stories for our second official anthology of short stories, Whimsical Tales from The Mad Hatters Bookshop, written by locals for locals. We were blown away by the talent and the interpretation of theme with stories of magic, quests, dragons & friendship and from genres as broad as historical fiction, high fantasy and mystery fiction. Emails were sent out to successful entrants on Sunday. If you haven't received an email from us, unfortunately t...hat means your submission wasn't quite right for us this time around but we do appreciate you taking the time to enter and allowing us the privilege of reading your stories. We also hope you will consider submitting stories to our future anthologies! We’re aiming for a mid-2021 release but will keep you all updated as we consider shipping & printing delays caused by COVID.

11.01.2022 Have you got your copy of The Survivors by Jane Harper yet?

11.01.2022 Some new puzzles and card games in stock. Love the concept of The Wild Bunch, a new take on Crazy Eights which we know as UNO but with animals and symbols instead of numbers!

10.01.2022 Happy Hump Day, and an update on the shop. 1. We have a new look website! I absolutely ADORE how much cleaner and easier it is to navigate than before. On the left are permanent categories and underneath seasonal categories which we constantly update to include reading challenges, awards lists, and holiday picks - like ideas for Father's Day. I've recently updated the Dyslexia-Friendly category which I'm excited to add to in the future. The website also links directly to our ...blog where we post book reviews and very soon more author interviews! Please take a peek at the first interview posted last night with local author, Ken Linnett - I'll post the link in the comments section. 2. Our bank troubles are very, very close to being resolved. No answers yet as to how the fraud occurred but some of the money is slowly being refunded which is a huge relief to us. The support we've received from this community has been invaluable. I've been pinching myself a lot lately. I don't know how we got so lucky. 3. Submissions are still open for Whimsical Tales until September 30 (I'm pretty sure I told someone September 31st, which turns out isn't an actual date, whoops! ) I've loved flicking through the entries received so far. 4. I have been curating a LOT of book lists for schools and businesses lately. I'll put a separate post out about this later in the week, but please know you can reach out at any time at [email protected] for suggestions - we offer discounts on all school accounts and bulk buys from businesses and I can generally get back to you with a quote and order availability in 48 hours. 5. At the moment, we have no plans to put out a full school holiday timetable but we will host a booking-only storytime or two. More details to follow! Hope your week is going well - I'm exhausted and it's only Wednesday!

08.01.2022 Due to the craziness of Book Week (aka Book MONTH), we're a bit behind on reading through entries for Whimsical Tales! My apologies to everyone waiting for a response - we will be making our decision by the end of the week and sending out emails by Sunday 8th November. (P.S. We are loving the entries we've read so far!)

08.01.2022 In light of the completely normal weather we’re getting right now... In Australia's Wild Weird Wonderful Weather, readers are introduced to the wide range of weather in Australia, with bite-size pieces of information presented alongside graphic illustrations to entice young readers. Older readers will enjoy the detailed explanations about everything weather, from what causes certain phenomena to reading weather maps, exploring the climate of the past and preparing for the... climate of the future. With sections about Australia's extreme weather and the effects of climate change, Australia's Wild Weird Wonderful Weather gently introduces young readers to the challenges of a warming planet and encourages them to be mindful of impact their actions have on the environment. A resource section and glossary of weather words at the back of the book enable a parent, teacher or older reader to satisfy the deeper interest in weather that the book is sure to stimulate.

08.01.2022 Hannah and Kelly are set up out front ready to sign copies of their gorgeous new book, My Earth. If you’re out and about in Manly Harbour Village today please drop by and say hello and grab a copy of the book!

08.01.2022 An important message from our new shop mascot, Sir Barksley

07.01.2022 Thank you Sheldon College for having us for Book Fair yesterday! I had a fantastic day helping kids choose out books and putting my maths brain to good use by helping students keep under budget with their picks A BIG thank you to the amazing library staff and kids who made me feel so welcome AND who ran out of class to help me bring in the books when the sky suddenly opened and poured down torrential rain! (Luckily, very few books were damaged with the process!) I left at ...the end of the day with much fewer books and plenty of order forms! Parents, the junior library are kindly holding all reserved items from yesterday. If you give us a call on (07) 3393 5130 and quote your child’s name to pay, their order will available to collect at the library at end of day. It was lovely meeting everyone and we are looking forward to seeing you all again next year if not before then at the shop!

06.01.2022 Happy Halloween! This is normally our favourite (and busiest) time of the year and while it’s a bit strange not having the Halloween crowds come through the shop, we’re very grateful to at least have our own lowkey witchy celebration which heavily features this bucket of lollies

05.01.2022 "One of the secrets of life is that all that is really worth the doing is what we do for others." #lewiscarroll #doforothers #bookshop #madhattersbookshop #supportlocal #everydayshouldbebookweek #manlyharbourvillage

05.01.2022 You might remember Sammy the Sloth and his old pack from awhile ago but now we have a new group of animal friends Puppets are an excellent way to capture attention and promote dramatic play for kids. You can incorporate them into storytelling to teach narrative elements, encourage story retellings or even as an emotional support friend to practice reading and speaking skills. We have mice, rabbit and chick finger puppets as well as larger tortoise, rabbit and corgi hand puppets perfect tools for most animals stories like The Tortoise and the Hare!

05.01.2022 I don’t know where to begin so I will start by saying THANK YOU. Thank you for your support during this wild year. I really, truly, felt buoyed by everyone who came through our doors this year. Thank you to those who went out of their way to buy from us, make an order, tell their friends about us and share our posts on social media. We worked with fifteen schools, sold and donated lots of school prize vouchers, organised some events, gave a few talks, helped build library c...ollections and assisted countless students, teachers and parents pick out books. We had visits from authors and illustrators, visitors from all over, cat, dog AND lizard friends, and I learned how to ride an electric scooter on the yellow brick road. We welcomed new book club members, made new friends and said goodbye to one of our extraordinary staff members, though I like to think this place chips off a bit of its heart for you to carry around with you wherever you go. It began as the most anxiety-inducing year and ended with lots of wonderful memories, moments of joy and absolute weirdness but then, that’s what happens when you go amongst the mad people. See you in 2021!

03.01.2022 It is officially TEN WEEKS UNTIL CHRISTMAS! We will be open 9am-3pm tomorrow (Saturday) and Isabelle and I will be here to help all you lovely people pick out + gift wrap early Christmas gifts, choose an excellent read, find your last-minute Book Week book, or help you search for that book with the blue cover and the author name starting with a A, D or Q

03.01.2022 Follow, follow, follow the yellow(er) brick road. Re-paint is nearly done!
