25.01.2022 In the beginning, the Lawyer Cane people (Jini- lawyer and bara- people) and their neighbours (including the Kabi Kabi/ Gubi Gubi) were the only people to have experienced the beauty of Maleny and the Reserve. The Jinibara have been part of a cycle of growth, death, decay and rebirth in the Hinterland that has gone on for tens of thousands of years. The many plant and animal communities seen there today have existed for perhaps millions of years. Those who gifted their wor...k to the MAGIC book, together with its kind funding body, the Friends of Mary Cairncross wish to pay respect to Jinibara ancestors and descendants and to their continued connection and contributions to the Reserve. We hope that through reading our book, you too will experience a lasting connection and appreciate our responsibility for its preservation.

21.01.2022 In the spirit of Neville Cayley's iconic text... What bird is that? This illustration was gifted to MAGIC by an author and artist equally as revered, Peter Slater. Post your answer below!
18.01.2022 Did you know... only 6% of Australia's estimated 250,000 species of fungi have been given a name? 170 species of fungi have been identified in the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Many of these are represented in the MAGIC publication including this rare Red Waxcap, beautifully illustrated by editor Les Hall and delicate Ink Cap by Louise Saunders.
17.01.2022 Artist Carol Clark will be in attendance at the MAGIC Art Exhibition tomorrow from 11-12noon. Carol is a Graphic Designer by trade and was encouraged to paint some birds for MAGIC by the editor Les. To say Les was impressed by her work is a gross understatement! 13.01.2022 Did you know... Brush-turkey males have a temperature sensitive region just inside their mouth which they use to maintain their nests at a toasty 34C? So, next time your resident turkey is dragging leaf litter from one side of your yard to the other, remember he is just trying to keep his unhatched chicks warm! This beautiful painting by Sally Elmer features on page 27.

10.01.2022 The case of the missing Thumbnail Orchid... The Reserve is home to at least 10 species of orchid, however, not the Thumbnail Orchid - pictured here with the Pencil Orchid in magnificent detail by artist Louise Saunders AM. The fact that this orchid is found in other key habitat islands of the Blackall Range, highlights the sensitive requirements of species and importance of preserving a diverse system of natural reserves.

03.01.2022 Once thought to be the work of MAGIC, the cool green glow of luminous fungi actually comes from an organic molecule called luciferin, meaning light bearer. The aptly named Ghost Fungus and Pixie's parasol are two of the many MAGIC elements of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. This remarkable illustration is by celebrated Sunshine Coast artist Jim Cox - pg 125.
