24.01.2022 What a brilliant photo!

23.01.2022 An extensive network of government and private railway lines once served The Hunter Valley coalfields. The private lines were operated by a number of companies.... Probably the most well known is The South Maitland Railways Pty Ltd. The SMR used a wide variety of locomotives over the decades, though their primary motive power were the fourteen 10 Class, introduced between 1912 and 1926 to replace the company's eclectic fleet which was becoming inadequate for the work required of it. All fourteen 10 Class remained in service into the 1980s, though some lasted longer than others. All fourteen have been preserved, and all are National Trust classified. Here the last of the class (No.31) leads a rake of non air braked hoppers towards East Greta Exchange Sidings. 14.01.2022 Another great post from Ben at Old NSW Album page. We’re you ever a passenger on the SMR service? Do you have any photos to share? We’d love to see them. The primary purpose of The South Maitland Railways was the operation of coal trains from the South Maitland coalfields. The company also provided passenger services over its extensive network. These services alternated between being run using government locomotives and passenger cars and being an in house operation. Begi...nning in 1961, The SMR began using a fleet of Tulloch built railcars powered by Rolls Royce engines; these had been ordered in 1959 and three were eventually supplied. These vehicles had very short lifespans, as The SMR ceased operating its own passenger services in 1967, leading to the withdrawal of the fleet. A Rover Motors bus service to Newcastle replaced them. All the railcars were placed into storage while The SMR tried to sell them. These efforts failed, and the whole class was scrapped in 1977. In the happier times of 1961, a group of passengers prepare to board one of the three at Kurri Kurri Station on the first day the new vehicles' operation. 14.01.2022 The South Maitland Railway's 10 Class tank locos were a daily sight around the South Maitland Coalfields for over seventy years. Fourteen were constructed by Beyer, Peacock and Co. of Manchester (UK) between 1911 and 1925. They had been ordered by The East Greta Coal Company to replace an ageing fleet of borrowed and secondhand locomotives which were rapidly becoming unable to haul increasing coal traffic, making more powerful locomotives an urgent necessity. The photo below ...was taken in June 1980 late one afternoon of SMRs 10 and 18. 12.01.2022 Wow, what a fantastic photo!

10.01.2022 With restrictions slowly being lifted, we are still uncertain about when we can resume operations. Consequently we will not be holding our open day in June. We hope you are all safe and in good health and until we can open the doors and welcome you back, take care.

07.01.2022 Found this gem of a photo on the ‘Old NSW Album’ group with the following commentary and link. What a great photo! Kurri Road Station (undated, though in the early part of last century).
