24.01.2022 On Thursday, Jo from @Cessnock City Council dropped into our new Mai-Wel on Vincent in Cessnock to present some prizes to Lorie and Emma who took out some winning prizes for their entries in the Get Creative Competition. Congratulations! The competition was part of Council’s community engagement process for the review of the Disability Inclusion Action Plan which will outline the practical steps to be taken to create a more inclusive community for people with disability liv...ing in and visiting the area. The Get Creative Competition asked people to create a drawing, painting, song or poem that responds to the question What does inclusion look like in Cessnock City? In addition to the Cessnock-based competition, Mai-Wel participants and staff completed surveys to provide valuable feedback on what they would like to see in the City of Newcastle.

20.01.2022 Mai-Wel Creative Arts successfully held its first visual arts professional development program, which ran for eight weeks at the local Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG). During the program, artists were immersed in the contemporary art world, inspired by various exhibitions and artists. They observed the curation and installation process within the gallery and utilised the professional studio space. 18.01.2022 Congratulations to Jacob, Max and Toby who have recently obtained their First Aid Certificate as part of the Cert II Horticulture course delivered by Transformational Institute at Telarah BowlingClub. The Cert II Horticulture will provide job seekers with skills and knowledge across land care, garden maintenance and plants in general. Spring brings lots of opportunities for employment in garden maintenance and having the Cert II qualification under their belt paired with a First Aid Certificate will give the job seekers a competitive edge in the field. 17.01.2022 After successfully completing a Foundation Skills Course with TAFE NSW online during the COVID-19 lockdown earlier in 2020, Rebecca is now tackling a Certificate I in Skills for Vocational Pathways. Through her training opportunities, Rebecca has been refreshing her language, literacy and numeracy skills, learning to complete workplace forms and measurements, while also brushing up on her resume and cover letter writing skillss (just to name a few). 14.01.2022 Sam has been participating in Step Up twice a week under her School Leaver Employment Support (SLES) funding to build her work capacity, develop employment skills and gain confidence. With goals to develop her communication skills, explore vocational pathways options, make new friends and secure part-time employment, Sam has been embracing the many opportunities available through Step Up to prepare and explore the world of work. To date Sam has been supported to update her ...resume and cover letter, worked on her communication skills through practice interviews, looked at local work experience options, applied for some jobs of interest and started a Foundation Skills course in Retail. Today participants and staff at The Hub in Maitland welcomed the return of Rudy the elf to spread some Christmas cheer across the site. While COVID-19 has had little impact on Santa and the elves at the North Pole, Rudy’s taking some precautionary time out in quarantine before he is let loose in The Hub.
