This is the most significant capital infrastructure works undertaken at the Centre since it was opened in 1973. The venue was welcomed to country with a traditional smoking ceremony led by Uncle Mickey, a Senior Aboriginal Man and descendant of the Kaurna and Narrunga peoples. Adelaide Festival Centres Artistic Director and CEO Douglas Gautier officially unveiled The Maj, taking media on a tour of the new stage, bars, rehearsal room, dressing rooms and the famous signature wall.... #TheMajADL

04.01.2022 Remembering the last Australian vaudevillian Phyl Skinner. We are saddened to hear of the passing of beloved Adelaide born entertainer Phyl Skinner. She’s been through The Maj’s stage door more times than probably any other performer. Phyl Skinner, seen here with dance partner Bill Conlon made her debut as a snowflake in a panto at the Majestic Theatre in 1927. She had been in the spotlight ever since in plays, musicals, concerts and vaudeville.... In 1996 an Order of Australia Medal recognised her ‘services to the performing arts as a dance lecturer and historian, choreographer and artistic director.' At age 90 she told Peter Goers: ‘I can still do the splits but I need a day’s notice and show me the money!’ Photographer unknown. Phyl Skinner and Bill Conlon, Tivoli Theatre, 1940.
