21.01.2022 Oh we do love a good quality alpaca here at the maker- this magical yarn is lighter than wool (the fibres are hollow, so its also about three times more thermally insulating). We love its touch-me soft lustre (because the fibres are less scaly under a microscope, it feels smoother, silkier), and the environmental adaptability of the animals, who can thrive in harsher terrains than sheep leaving farming land for just that. Alpaca hairs are longer and stronger than regul...ar wool, so theyre good to blend with other fibres, increasing the durability and reducing shrinkage in wool blends. The Suri alpaca breed produces a particularly fine quality yarn, so its no wonder our new hand knitted beanies from Karakoram are so comfortable. 74% pure Suri alpaca is blended with sheep wool and a tiny 4% polyamide for shape retention- theyre generously sized but cleverly ribbed to hug the noggin just so.
