23.01.2022 Two of the Mountains' finest jazz bands, The Three Handed Beat Bandits & Soular Spill, are performing LIVE AT THE MECHANIC'S INSTITUTE in Lawson as part of Great Southern Nights, on Saturday, November 14th. THE THREE HANDED BEAT BANDITS undoubtedly the best three-handed big band in the world today. Made up of the two-handed, John Stuart, and the single-handed, Neill Duncan - between them they play guitar, bass, congas, drums and saxophone, all at the same time. Megaphone vo...cals included, this beat combo swing their listeners through a kaleidoscope of musical styles, including reggae, ska, calypso, funk, swing, and a little klezmer thrown in for good measure. Beautiful to the ear. Great for the feet. SOULAR SPILL Starting out as a jazz duo 5 years ago with just stripped back double bass and strong vocal harmonies at its core, Soular Spill, an evolving musical collective, has grown into a band comprising of all Blue Mountains based musicians. Each member contributes their own unique flavour, drawing on a rich tapestry of musical experience, and blends this into a warm folky sound that resounds with soul. With Lawson local Sarah Jane Spillane up front on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Skye Evans on the double bass and vocal harmonies, Colin Day on lead guitar with an array of effects, with either Frank Corby or Matt Skeleton laying down the beats on drums, Soular Spill creates a vibe that you can lean into. This music is soothing to listen to, THREE HANDED BEAT BANDTS & SOULAR SPILL // Saturday November 14, 2020 // Doors open 6:40pm Venue: The Mechanic's Institute, Lawson Tickets: $30 + bf More info: https://rebrand.ly/xp3mh Brought to you by The Friends of The Mechanics Institute, with financial support from the Great Southern Nights initiative, and some promotional support courtesy of Music in the Mountains. 15.01.2022 Not one, not two, but THREE BLUE MOUNTAINS BANDS live on stage at THE MECHANICS INSTITUTE in LAWSON. That's right, the party will be LIVE on stage on Saturday, November 21st, with JIM JARVIS & ROB THOMPSON, BONNIEDOON & SIDESHOW ANNIE. JIM JARVIS & ROB THOMPSON Jim Jarvis is an excellent solo performer well known for his distinctive, haunting blues voice and his finger-picking guitar style. He has a polish and finesse that is characteristic of a fine, traditional and world cl...ass blues musician. Folk and Bluesman Jarvis has been performing since the seventies around Sydney and at many venues in the Blue Mountains since the nineties. He is highly respected among many musicians and after early accolades as a solo performer has been a member of several well-known bands- Last Bus, Rent Party, the Hokum Onsomble, Duck Soup, three left feet with the late Greg Derrig and more recently as a duo with Al Meadows. BONNIEDOON BONNIEDOON are an Australian indie rock band with a heavy blues influence. The band formed in Sydney’s Blue Mountains in 2011. BONNIEDOON satisfy their audience with the powerhouse vocals of Bonnie Coady, the soulfully solid rhythms of guitarist Sheridan Hurst, the electrifying lead guitar lines of Hamish Rynehart, the boot thumping bass notes of Michael George and the tastefully delivered rocking drum beats of Colin Metronome Man McIntosh. The band has released two studio EP's and is currently working on their first studio album. The band has received much attention and acclaim after taking first place in a string of talent filled band competitions and as a result have formed a strong audience base that follow their many rocking shows. SIDESHOW ANNIE .rich musical blend of East meets West, begins with a psychedelically dry and drifting desert scale, shifting into a hard rocking, uplifting chorus with Gillian’s powerful, wailing blues voice leading the way, before an expansive percussive interlude segues the piece into a dreamy, ambience Shearston and Grilli Entertanment August July 2019. The past few years has seen the band busy touring Australia, Japan, USA, UK and Spain whilst finding themselves quite at home featuring at Steam Punk festivals, Halloween celebrations, as much as the usual fare of clubs and pubs. 08.01.2022 Local composer Neil Sagewood will be supporting Elena Kats-Chernin & Tamara-Anna Cislowska's performance LIVE AT THE MECHANIC'S INSTITUTE tonight. Neil released an album with his trio in 2017, Octagon. Octagon was the magical melding of 35 years of musical craft and woodcraft. Each of the songs tells a story associated with the life and career of this celebrated, versatile local musician, master pianist and master carpenter, best known to Mountains locals for the Latin sensat...ion Babalu. The Octagon itself is an exquisitely built light-filled studio that Sagewood designed and built in the bushland setting of his home. The centrepiece of the room is a rare exemplar of the iconic Australian Beale grand piano, lovingly brought back to life by Sydney Opera House piano technician Owen Geary. It was Neil’s daughter Charlotte, also an accomplished musician, who insisted that the beauty of his compositions be fully realised and introduced the exceptional, boundary-breaking drummer/percussionist and studio engineer Ben Walsh (The Bird, Circle of Rhythm) to help realise the magic of Octagon. Walsh instantly knew that he had taken on a very special project. It’s almost as if the Beale was the fourth member of the band, Neil said. It vibrated with the bass and resonated the cymbal frequencies. We were all in awe of the tone and sustain of the instrument, the most beautiful acoustic properties I have ever heard in a piano.
