23.01.2022 The Melbourne Clinic as a training facility has been key in developing our workforces of the future. We have a yearly Undergraduate Nursing intake of between 650-700 students, and is a sought after mental health placement among partner institutions as we encourage students to participate/observe activities in ECT, TMS, Living Well, Day and Outreach Programs, on top of the experiences on the ward. This year has been totally different. When COVID-19 protocols and restrictions ...where put into place, allocating students around the hospital posed it's challenges. Placements for Mental Health and other areas like Aged Care and Sub-Acute were cancelled. Acknowledging the need for nurses as front liners, The Melbourne Clinic, with protocols and policies in place, supported Nurses who are in their 3rd year of Nursing, and International Nurses who were completing their Bridging Program. Between February and September 2020, we have facilitated the registration of 131 Nurses in Bridging Program. Most of these nurses then worked in COVID-19 wards, and some even went to Mental Health. Mentoring and facilitating student nurses in the ward is not easy especially when you are faced with something unknown and unfamiliar like COVID-19, but our staff in the Units, ECT and Day Program, where we have sent these students during these times have shown great skills and remarkable attitude that have left a mark on each students perception of Mental Health Nursing. These experiences establish The Melbourne Clinic as a great place to be for our future workforce.

22.01.2022 Trans Awareness Week is a chance to take the time to celebrate the Trans and gender diverse community, but as allies it’s also our job to make sure we make time... to educate ourselves on the diverse trans experience and take real action to advocate for Trans lives. Today’s education resources are brought to you by TransHub who have just launched a new section to their award winning resource centre, TransHub101. This is your one stop shop for the LGBTIQ+ community, allies and health professionals seeking to better understand Trans identities and experiences. You can view their resource centre here: https://www.transhub.org.au/ The Trans community is strong and resilient. However, our community is strongest when we look after ourselves and one another. One of the most powerful things we can do as allies is take ownership of our continued education and understanding of the Trans experience. This small gesture can ensure that we are there for our community in the way they need it the most. While we understand there is a lot to celebrate this week, we also know that this time of year can be challenging for those in our community. If you are experiencing distress or unwelcome thoughts and feelings, we want you to know that there is always somewhere or someone to turn to. You can access these resources on our website. 20.01.2022 This year's campaign, 'Flipping the Script: Changing the Narrative on BPD' aims to change the way we think and talk about borderline personality disorder. It encourages people living with BPD to be mindful of the way they think about themselves, allow others to see their challenges, move towards strengths-based self-talk and to celebrate their strengths. It also challenges families, supporters and people working with those living with BPD. Borderline Personality Disorder (BP...D) is a complex mental disorder that is often misunderstood. People with this disorder are frequently discriminated against and stigmatised. Symptoms for people with this disorder may include emotional distress, self-harm, difficulty relating to others and the world around them. This can be very distressing for the person and for people close to them. Currently between 2% and 5% of Australians are affected by BPD at some stage in their lives. 19.01.2022 Every year on 20 November, we remember and honour the lives of trans and gender-diverse people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. #TDOR2020

19.01.2022 Nearly 1.2 million Australian adults and 112,000 young people live with depression each year. One in four people will develop an anxiety disorder at some point in their lives, with about 14 percent of Australians experiencing an anxiety disorder in a year. Mental and substance-use disorders are the third highest burden of disease in Australians.... For an issue that impacts so many Australians it's time that we all start talking about mental health. Mental Health: The Elephant in the Room campaign aims to raise awareness of the prevalence of mental illness and encourage all Australians to speak openly about the issue. If you have concerns that someone you know may have a mental health issue, it's important to talk to them about your concerns. Knowing what to say can be hard and you might worry that you will say something wrong. But showing that you are willing to talk with them and listen to them is very important. #MentalHealthWeek #ElephantInTheRoom #APHA

13.01.2022 October 15 is Global Handwashing Day, a global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives. The COVID-19 pandemic provides a stark reminder that one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of a virus is also one of the simplest: hand hygiene, especially through handwashing with soap. To beat the virus today and ensure better health outcomes beyond the pandemic, handwashing with soap must be a priority now and in the future. This year’s theme, Hand Hygiene for All, calls for all of society to achieve universal hand hygiene. #GlobalHandwashingDay #HandHygieneForAll

06.01.2022 Let’s talk about men. Men experience a greater share of the total fatal and non-fatal burden of disease, dying at younger ages than females and more often from preventable causes. As such, this International Men’s Day, we ask all men to reflect on their health, and we ask all Australians to take part in a global conversation about manhood, masculinity and men’s issues. If you feel as though some part of your physical or mental health isn’t quite right, be sure to seek out the help you need by speaking to your GP. Any delay in help-seeking reduces the opportunity for early diagnosis and intervention, which can dramatically affect long-term outcomes for diseases such as cancer, chronic conditions, and for mental health conditions. #TalkingAboutMen https://www.internationalmensday.info/
