25.01.2022 Taking photos of my family and documenting our lives and the lives of other people is really important to me. My beautiful Dad died 16 years ago this year and I wish I had more photos of him. I wish I had realised at the time how important they would be to show to my children and to have around me now, so many years after he died. When I found out about The Memory Collective I knew I had to be involved, having photos of your family are beautiful to look at now- but in 10, 20,... 30 years, children, grandchildren and friends and family will have these beautiful photos. Being asked to take photos of any family is such a privilege - and the photo's taken for this project will be especially precious, what a gift to be able to give this to another family. When I look at my favourite photos of my own family they are the ones where my kids are playing together or when they are hanging out with my husband and I sneakily take pictures - when they are cooking together or playing a board game or out in the garden, just doing those things we do every day- those little moments that make up our lives together, that is the stuff I want to document, that tells the story of a families life together. 17.01.2022 When my best friend from high school told me her mum had been diagnosed with aggressive cancer I became acutely aware of the power of photography as a memory keeper. Instantly family photography wasn't a luxury item to me, it was an urgent necessity. Gail didn't know how long she had to live and of course no one really wanted to dwell on it too. However, they understood the urgency in having a photography session whilst she was still well. My friend and her siblings were sca...ttered across the state but they made a huge effort to get together for one lovely, bittersweet afternoon for our shoot. The images are framed in their homes and the older grandchildren delight in telling the grandkids who weren't born at the time, all about their dear Gubby. This has inspired me to continue to dig deeper when photographing families. To capture not just what they look like but who they are. The relationships, the daily rituals along with the really personal details around their homes - their artwork, their books and knick knacks, the sunnny verandah and wonky footpath out the front. All of these small details together enable me to give them a cohesive story for now and future generations. It's a really special feeling to know my work is preserving history in this simple way. 05.01.2022 Shout out to Natalie Finney who undertook our first photo session on the weekend. Capturing a family during a sad time can be an overwhelming experience for a photographer who already puts so much heart into all of their work. Natalie’s courage and professionalism is an inspiration. Please go show her some love. Elyse Photo: Natalie Finney Photography
