23.01.2022 Smiles all round on The Mitchell Farm

22.01.2022 We have a variety of chickens on our farm. From Isa Browns, Wyandotte Bantams, Plymouth Rocks, Aruacanas and most recently Silkies. They are all very good layers and we collect about 12-15 eggs each morning. We sell their eggs for $5 a carton. Today we found a Shell Less egg from one of our girls. If you have had this happen and are unsure about what’s going on, here’s a few facts.... What Causes Hens to Lay Shell-Less Eggs? Lots of things can cause a hen to lay a shell-less egg, and it can be difficult to pinpoint the cause. Here are some possibilities: Something stressed your hen out. She isn’t getting enough calcium in her diet. It takes a lot of calcium to produce egg shells, so hens need a lot of calcium in their diet. Your hens is an egg-laying all-star. If your hens consistently lays every day, she may simply be producing more eggs than she has calcium for, or be laying faster than her body can produce a shell. You hen is young. If you hen is just beginning to lay, she may have some funky eggs in the beginning. Don’t worry; her shell gland will catch up soon enough. Your hen is coming in or out of her egg-laying season. A lot of breeds stop laying in the winter and resume in the spring. You may get a couple weird eggs, while they’re winding down or picking back up. She’s old or may be sick Infectious bronchitis and eggdrop syndrome can also cause shell-less eggs. If you have reason to believe your hen may be sick, take her to a vet.

17.01.2022 We are expecting some little ducklings in around 35 days! Lovely Daphne is sitting on a nice big clutch, but I havnt been able to get close enough to see how many. Taking expression of interests. Will be selling as ducklings. While we wait, here are some interesting facts about the Female Muscovy Duck Males reach sexual maturity in 29 weeks and the female matures in 28 weeks. The mating season of the Muscovy can last from August to May. This can vary by climate and the fem...ales can have three to four broods per year as long as she has sufficient protein in her diet. The female will set her nest in a large cavity in a tree or in a suitably secure ready-made nest box off the ground or an elevated duck house; they do not like ground sitting duck houses. Some folks keep them in with their chickens since Muscovies are not as mucky as a regular duck and the arrangement seems to work well enough. Her clutch of eggs can be up to 16 or so eggs. She will then carefully incubate her eggs for 35 days until they hatch. Often a few females will brood together The ducklings will stay close by Mama for 10-12 weeks to keep warm and safe. During this time they will be learning all the skills needed to survive. At 12 weeks the ducklings will be a good sized bird although not yet adults.

We take the time to get to know each animal and spend quality time with them all, learning and understanding their personalities. When purchasing animals from the Mitchell Farm you will know they have been loved and cared for with the upmost respect. We will only ever sell to people who share the same values as us, to ensure that these animals will continue to have a happy, healthy and long life
