14.01.2022 Elnaz Sheshgelani, star and creator of the recent production 'Iranian Bauhaus', is running a series of workshops starting tomorrow night where you can learn about the elements of Persian dramatic storytelling - the highly stylised gestures, the masks and how to weave these elements together in a unique performance. Come along for one or all of the three nights. More info and booking link here: Persian Dramatic Storytelling Workshop
14.01.2022 Calling all visual artists! We are thrilled to announce the opening of our new Street Gallery. We figured since people couldn't come inside the business, we would take th work outside and it has been, so far, a great success.... So we are putting the call out there for artists who want to get their work on display. $50 per week per section plus 20% commission on sales. Email to register your interest. xx
08.01.2022 Elnaz Sheshgelani has been blowing away audiences this week with her take on ancient Persian theatrical performance. Still two more performances of Iranian Bauhaus to go (ends tomorrow!). Then next week you can join Elnaz in a series of workshops - Persian Dramatic Storytelling Workshop where you can learn and practise some of the elements of this ancient form of theatre. More info on the event pages and our website!

06.01.2022 Well! These are strange times. With all the conflicting information and rapidly developing events it has been very difficult for me to figure out what to do.... On Friday it felt like, even though larger events where cancelling, given that we are such a boutique little art space, that we should be able to forge on. But in the face of every day suddenly feeling like a year I must say that that was a long time ago. I opened the Motley with the primary goal of wanting to create a place that supported the arts and more specifically the artists who make it. I feel the arts are uniquely placed to bring communities together, and at a time when so much of what is going on around the world and in Australia seeks to tear us apart this is an important goal and one I take quite seriously. So with the onset of the virus my thinking has always been focussed on- what can I do to best support the artists under my care in the face of our entire industry collapsing before our eyes. My current thinking is that providing a venue for artists in this environment serves nothing but to provide them with false hope. Things will get worse before they get better and already the current sentiment is that people are increasingly uncomfortable leaving the house, let alone congregating, no matter how small that congregation is. But I didn't want to make the call for the producers and artists who had events coming up at the Motley. In an industry full of people who don't often have a lot of franchise over their own future I felt like this was an important thing to do to give them the choice. SO! After consulting with everyone I can now say, with a deeply heavy heart, that I will be closing the Motley to all public events for just as long as it takes for us all to kick this thing in the arse... by which I mean hopefully a month... but every day stretches on and so who knows where we will be in a month? We shall see. I am currently working on some strategies to refocus the Motley and find ways to keep providing a platform to support the arts so look for some announcements about that in the near future hopefully... currently researching some multi camera webcast facilities to take this thing global baby! I want to thank everyone for their love and support. There has been a really amazing community of artists (and some regular people) that have started gathering around the Motley and it warms my heart. I wish you all luck and joy in the days, weeks and months ahead. If there is anything you need please feel free to reach out. I have a theatre, a gallery, I'm a pretty good cook and I'll have some time! We will all get through this and emerge stronger as a community on the other side if we support each other on the way through. Love and happiness to you all. Jason
