25.01.2022 WHY SHOULD YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR BMI? Your BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a measure using both weight and height to calculate a healthy weight for your height. Having an increased BMI exposes you to increased risk of cardiovascular complications including heart attacks and strokes. However your BMI is something that can be controlled through ‘lifestyle’ modification What we really mean by that is you can lower your BMI with a few simple changes such as drinking more water a...nd reducing your portion size which can help reduce your risk of adverse health events!! Keep in mind that a BMI doesn’t take into account age, body composition, or gender. There are also variations in BMI according to ethnicity. Generally speaking, BMI normative value shoulder be lower for those of an Asian background, higher for those of Polynesian background, older adults and elite athletes. We say elite athletes because they have increased levels of muscle, which weighs more than fatty tissue A great measure alongside this is weight circumference. An increased waist circumference is also related to an increase in chronic disease (e.g. type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, peripheral artery disease). The higher the waist circumference, the higher the risk of chronic disease. (Waist circumference and BMI do not apply to children or pregnant women). 25.01.2022 Quick update to let you know what we are doing to stay Covid Safe We've been wearing masks in our clinics for months now and we now kindly request that those attending our clinics wear one too. Although the restrictions are a little ambiguous about wearing masks in physio and medical centres, we prefer to be ahead of these things and protect everyone as best we can. So we are requesting you wear one inside our clinics just like us, for your own safety, our staff safety and... the safety of our other visitors. Our primary concern during this time is the health and safety of our customers and team. Here are some other things we have been doing every single day and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future: Wearing masks even in open areas where we can maintain social distancing Offering online exercise classes and online physio/ EP sessions so you can still work towards your health goals without leaving the house We have always been committed to hygiene and high standards of clinical care. We have been reinforcing this within our clinics and amongst the staff, reviewing our polices and ensuring that we are maintaining them. As a precaution we have also instigated twice daily deeper cleaning of the clinic and equipment. Strict screening procedures both via online questionnaire and also upon entry to our centres each time you visit If you have symptoms of fever, cough, runny nose, shortness of breath or have been in any of the identified hot spots, we ask that you do not attend the clinic and that you inform us via telephone so that we can convert you to online consults and continue to assist you with your recovery. Our team thanks you for your cooperation and patience as we adjust to the ever changing rules and situation

18.01.2022 It's around about that time when we all start to think forward to kicking off the New Year and what habits we might like to form. For many of us, we might be looking to start exercising more or get back into a sport we have lost somewhere along the way. Keep in mind that no matter what your activity of choice is, it's important to warm your body up correctly to avoid unnecessary injuries! What happens when we warm up before exercise? A warm up prepares us for the task ahead... so that we are in a better physical and mental state Our blood vessels dilate and are able to provide the working muscles with nutrients and oxygen to help those muscles to keep contracting Increase in blood flow = increase in body and muscle temperature. This helps to provide mobility throughout the body as well as allowing our muscles to contract more rapidly and forcefully. Minimise the stress placed on the heart by gradually increasing the activity intensity Mental preparation. Warm ups can increase focus on the task ahead, improve coordination, skill and strategy. #movementmill #livethelifeyouwant #healthyhabits #physio #exercisescience #exercisephysiology #warmup #healthyliving #injuryprevention
