24.01.2022 Thats How I Feel Today by Libby Hammer A few months ago, my friends at West Australian Symphony Orchestra and the absolutely amazing Libby Hammer put the call out for submissions of Libbys song Thats How I Feel Today as part of the EChO school holiday challenge and we thought we would put together a video as a family ! It was a few weeks into lockdown and working from home, as well as home schooling, and all of the playgrounds were closed, so we feel it best repres...ented how we were feeling at the time . We had SO much fun filming it, it was a great family project and there were lots of bloopers in the making! But it will be a special memory to look back on for what went down in 2020 . We are thinking of our family and friends over east and in other parts of the world that are going through another round of lockdown right now. Hang in there . #themusicalmum #waso #libbyhammer #thatshowifeeltoday #emotions #feelingssong #wasoecho #echo #lockdownsong #lifeinlockdown #songs #familymusic #familymusictime #music #sing #familyfun See more

24.01.2022 Do you ever feel as though you want time to slow down and to soak in all of the moments? I have been feeling this way more and more lately, as my oldest daughter is about to turn 8 ! Time really does go by so fast and in the blink of an eye, here we are. Im trying not to blink, so that everything slows down and trying to make sure to remember every little thing while we are in these precious early years . Soak it all up! #themusicalmum

22.01.2022 - Instrument play and exploration of dynamics This is some for the prompt INSTRUMENT as part of our amazing August # over on Instagram ... Here we are sharing a favourite song of ours, I Hear Thunder which I love to use to explore dynamics with children. Dynamics in music means the volume of a sound or note. In this video, we play loudly on the beat for the thunder and then use our fingertips to play softly for the raindrops. Learning how to keep a steady beat is such an important skill for children. Songs and rhymes that support the opportunity to practice keeping a steady beat have been shown to support language development, literacy skills and fluency in reading. Not to mention it is vital for playing music! The topic of weather is the perfect inspiration for exploring a variety of musical concepts including dynamics, as weather itself can be very contrasting - one minute the sun is shining, the next minute a storm is on its way! So this provides a great prompt for exploring opposites such as loud and soft. Understanding the concept of opposites is important to their language development, in being able to compare two different things, and in music, when they have been exposed to these contrasting concepts, they will then be able to those words to describe music. We are playing our big Remo , but you could also recreate this activity in your play at home using a table, the floor, pots and pans, ice-cream containers, or even in the high chair! The second part of the video is a throwback to two years ago when the girls were little and Wyatt was still sitting in a high chair! My heart ! What are your favourite ways to explore playing different instruments with your children? #themusicalmum #instrument #gatheringdrum #remo #nurseryrhyme #instrumentexploration #playinganinstrument #keepthebeat #drumplay #orff #orffschulwerk #dynamics #musicteachersofinstagram #preschoolmusic #kindergartenteachers #earlyyearsmusic #earlyyearsmusicmaking #musicplay #perthteacher See more

22.01.2022 The First Musician by Amanda Graham - Storytelling and The Arts Today, I would love to share with you this wonderful book, The First Musician by Amanda Graham, that was recently given to me by a lovely friend. It is not only a beautiful story with stunning illustrations, but it provides some magical possibilities of extension through creating links with The Arts - music, movement and drama. Below I share some ways to explore this text further . ... First, listen to the story and look carefully at the illustrations. Take it all in! When and where is the story set? What happens in the story? What are the key elements of the story? What do you think the young girl is doing in the story? Where do the musicians live? Explore the story further: What instruments are featured in the story? What type of sounds do you think they make? What are they made of? Where do these instruments come from? How could we re-tell the story using our own instruments? What instrument/s do you think could represent the different parts of the story? Can you recreate the story using percussion instruments or items from around the house/classroom that make a sound? Create a soundscape? When do you think How could we use our body to tell the story? Can you move around the space like the sunshine, stream, forest, thunderclouds, lightning, sunset? Can you make a shape with your body to represent the sunshine, stream, forest etc? I could also see this book linked to Vivaldis Four Seasons . There are so many wonderful ways to create connections between literacy and the arts! I have only listed a selection of questions that could be considered here, but the possibilities really are endless! I would love to know if you have read this book before or if you have used it in your classroom. What are some of your favourite books that have connections with music and movement? #themusicalmum #storytelling #amandagraham #childrensbooks #childrensbookstagram #childrensbooksillustration #musiceducation #musicteacher #orff #orffschulwerk #dalcroze #danceteaching #thearts #earlychildhoodeducation #primaryschoolteacher #primaryteacher #primaryteaching #literacyandarts #artsandliteracy #literacyandmusic #musicandmovement #thearts #curriculumlinks #lessonplan #booksandmusic #literacymatters #teachingideas #teachingenglish #teachingmusic #teachingdance See more

16.01.2022 Today I am sharing this lovely traditional finger play rhyme with you that is perfect for this festive time of year! Although it was filmed a couple of weeks ago, I felt it was too sweet not to share . With easy to follow actions and rhythmic words it would be perfect for exploring rhythmic concepts or in an Orff Schulwerk setting by using snippets of the rhyme to create a canon. For early years educators, we know that fingerplays such as this ...introduce children to language and speech patterns, develop fine and gross motor skills, strengthen coordination and provide a foundation for early music literacy skills. I could also see this particular rhyme being implemented by instrumental music teachers to strengthen dexterity and playing technique. I was imagining my lovely friend Laura from Stringosaurus using this rhyme in an innovative way to support correct bow hold technique ! . , . What is your favourite fingerplay rhyme to use in your setting or at home with your children? #themusicalmum #robinredbreast #fingerplayrhyme #fingerplaysong #fingerplays #fingerplaysongs #musiceducationmatters #musicteacher #musiced #earlylearningskills #earlyyearseducators #earlyyearseducation #earlyyearsliteracyfun #earlyyearsmusic #literacyskills #langauagedevelopment #earlylamguagedevelopment #braindevelopment #orffschulwerkmethod #kindergartenteacher #musicforbabies #musicfortoddlers See more

15.01.2022 , by Susan Hood - Storytelling using musical instruments, movement and puppets ... Following from my last post, this is another wonderful book that also inspires imaginative links with musical instruments, movement and puppets. Caterpillar Spring Butterfly Summer is written in rhyming verse and seamlessly intertwines singing, dancing, marching, ballet, drumming, leaping, bouncing, in a gorgeous celebration of a caterpillars journey to becoming a butterfly ! The fabric-covered spring Caterpillar stretches and winds through each page, just like my Claterpillar Tiny Tones instrument which is traditionally called a Kokoriko. This instrument produces a clear, crisp sound and it accompanies the caterpillar in the story perfectly by providing an auditory and visual cue. After reading the story, play the Clatterpillar/Kokoriko in a wave like manner. Each wooden plate moves in a rhythmical way that mimics the movement of an actual caterpillar, perfectly reinforcing the story. I think you could use this as the basis for a movement activity, where your children or students could move their body like a caterpillar and mimic the movements of the instrument. Then they could roll up in a ball underneath a rainbow scarf (like the one pictured) and pretend to be asleep in their cocoon. Play a piece of light classical music and they could break out of their cocoon and move around the space as a butterfly using their scarf as their wings. You could also use a butterfly puppet and have the puppet dance, fly, or land on different body parts or around the space. The children can then copy you using their scarf to do the same. Another idea, is to have the children in pairs, and have the children mirror each others butterfly movements, with one leading and one mirroring. The book also makes reference to a lovely woodpecker drummer, which opens the door for lots of thought provoking questions: What is a woodpecker? What sound does it make? Why do you think it is called a woodpecker? What could be an instrument that might make a similar sound to a woodpecker? Why does it make a similar sound? Why do you think the author called the woodpecker a drummer? There are so many fantastic childrens books and stories that provide an abundance of connections to the arts learning areas which can build upon childrens learning, comprehension and creativity ! How do you link different learning areas and experiences in your teaching to The Arts? #themusicalmum #booklove #tinytones #woodeninstruments #childrensbooks #childrensstories #artsliteracy #musicteachers #teachingideas #thearts #singplaydance #orff #orffschulwerk #singsaymoveplay #musicandmovement #musiceducation #connectionthroughmusic #musicbook #songbook #booksilove #iteachmusic #teachingmusic #movementmatters #artofmovement #kidscreativity #creativekids #storytellingmama #storytelling #storytellingthroughart #percussioninstrument

13.01.2022 , , Down the Street has become a popular rhyme in my Nurturing Notes classes and also with my own children too !... Start with tapping the beat on your childs foot while saying the rhyme, so that they can feel the steady beat. Toddlers and preschoolers might like to tap their own foot and then parents can say the rhyme in time with their tapping. Being able to keep a steady beat provides a strong foundation for your childs music education. However, steady beat also helps to strengthen communication skills, language development and fluency in reading, as your child gets older. Over time, you can build upon this, by tapping the rhythm of bang, bang, bang as an extension. When your child uses the opposite hand to tap their foot, they cross the midline. Crossing the midline is the ability to reach across the middle of the body using your arms or legs. Crossing the midline is important for movement and for the development of skills such as writing, cutting, reading, putting on shoes, and is vital to improving the communication between the left and right sides of the brain. I love to set the story by either pretending I have broken shoes and telling the story of how I broke them, or introducing this rhyme with a puppet wearing dolls or baby shoes and then explaining that we need to help fix them. If you are at home, perhaps you could fix your childs toys shoes or open up a Cobbler shop with all of your shoes. By introducing the rhyme in this way, it provides the children with context and delves into their imagination! One day after class, I observed a toddler using a Clave as a hammer and tapping on the legs of a table saying he was fixing things. It inspired me and after a few weeks of saying the rhyme using our hands, we started using our Remo Mallets and Claves as hammers to fix our shoes! I love using Symbolic Play in my music classes and repurposing musical instruments for different things to extend on our musical activities and their learning experiences. At home you could use a wooden spoon, stick, brush, pencil, anything! Seeing the world through a childs eyes is magical! What is your favourite traditional rhyme? 13.01.2022 , , - Orff song on the Pat Bells Here is my special musical assistant April and I performing Ding, Dong, Diggidiggidong that I learned at my Orff Schulwerk Levels course. We have been really enjoying playing the Pat Bells and so I thought it was a fun song to show how easy it is to sing and play with them. April is playing a broken Bordun on Do (C) and So (G). This song is also great for teaching the tika tika rhythm and exploring the pentat...onic scale. Activities like this are a wonderful way to develop ensemble playing skills and aid in brain, gross and fine motor development. We have so much fun playing together, can you tell?! 13.01.2022 . - Oh Mr. Sun is such a beautiful childrens song and I just love to sing it using scarves! It always brings a smile to my face . All children love playing peekaboo and this song provides the perfect opportunity when the sun peeks out from behind the trees. ... Playing peekaboo games with children has many benefits, including the use of visual tracking skills, strengthening of bonds and relationships, development of gross motor skills and understanding of object permanence. Not to mention it brings so much joy! For young babies, you can gently hover the scarf or piece of material in front of their face or your face while you pull the scarf down and play peekaboo. As they get older they will enjoy pulling the scarf down themselves. In fact when they are old enough to reach out and pull it down themselves, it shows that they are understanding the play and that they understand the pattern and sequence of events in the game. Toddlers and preschoolers will be able to independently hide under the scarf and pull it off. However you can then use a song such as this to practice the use of positional language and perhaps change where the sun is hiding, as well as practice role playing and sequencing. When they move the scarf along to the song, it enables the child to practice their hand-eye coordination and gross motor skills. Ive used simple movement with my scarf in this video, but you could easily make it more challenging by changing how the children need to move their scarf, or even better ask them for suggestions! This is my play prompt for MOVEMENT as part of our amazing August # over on . It ends on Sunday, so enter now ! 07.01.2022 Higglety Pigglety POP! - traditional rhyme with actions and exploration of Claves, introduction to CVC words Higglety Pigglety Pop is such a fun traditional rhyme that I feel doesnt get as much recognition as some of the others. However, it is short, sweet, and catchy! I decided Id love to use this rhyme, so created some simple actions to help my children and students to remember the sequencing. Building upon that, once they know the actions, you could then incoporate... the Claves with the actions and use it to practice keeping a steady beat. Higglety Pigglety Pop introduces children to CVC words in such a seamless way and further reinforces the concept of rhyming words too. 05.01.2022 Snail, snail - traditional song used with a tickle Last term in my Nurturing Notes classes, we explored the traditional song, Snail, snail in many different ways, as part of our Garden theme . I introduced the song with the use of this Stirring Xylo as a snail. This sparked the imagination of all the children as they pictured it as a snail which created lots of discussion and it made for the perfect musical play exploration. The song Snail, snail provides an opp...ortunity to explore beat, pitch of Mi/So/La and tempo. I used the song in the ways featured in this video so that it provides an opportunity to further strengthen the connection you have with your child through the experience of a Tickle. With our littlest ones, we sang the song and traced circle shapes on their palms, feet, backs, or tummies in time with the beat. Some of the older toddlers and preschoolers began to attempt to trace the shape on their own hand or on their carers hand. Then our kindergarten aged children first sang the song while tracing the circle shape on their own palm, explored the pitch and tempo, walked in a circle on the beat, with the goal of working towards being able to make the spiral shape of the snail by the end of the term. With all of this wet weather lately, it would be a great time to introduce this song and activity to your children at home or in your classroom . This Stirring Xylo is a versatile pitched percussion instrument that can be played in a variety of ways and explored in lots of wonderful musical play experiences. 02.01.2022 Today I am sharing a gorgeous Finger Play Wiggle rhyme that I had the pleasure of learning from Dr John Feierabend earlier this year. It emulates hushed wonder and my youngest, Wyatt, and I enjoying sharing this rhyme together as a way to calm down and he likes it as a soothing way to settle before sleep. Of course finger play rhymes can be used at any time throughout the day! Not only do beautiful rhymes such as this pro...vide delight, they also weave a variety of musical elements such beat, tempo, expression, and tonality, into the experience. For Wiggle rhymes with younger children, wiggle each finger or toe from largest to smallest. Older children may either wiggle their own fingers or an adults fingers while you say the rhyme, following their tempo (speed) of course.
