17.01.2022 Phillip Island’s globetrotting short-tailed shearwaters have officially touched down, after flying over 12,000km from feeding grounds in waters around Alaska. I...t seems last year’s late arrival of the birds was not a once-off. This year, they also landed early in October, rather than their long-term standard date September 24. Over the summer months, more than 1.5 million short-tailed shearwaters call Phillip Island home, nesting in sand dune burrows along the coast. Locals and visitors can look to the skies just after sunset to witness the spectacular sight and sounds of them flying in after a fishing trip. Listen to the arrival of short-tailed shearwaters bit.ly/34rbZhs Nature Parks Deputy Research Director Dr Duncan Sutherland and his team will head out next week to monitor several study sites to gain a picture of the birds’ overall condition after their long-haul flight. #phillipislandnp Photo by Nature Parks Education Ranger Graeme Burgan.

16.01.2022 Tourism connects people, empowers and builds communities, and is a catalyst for preserving and promoting our culture, heritage and protecting endangered speci...es. Today we celebrate World Tourism Day, the amazing people that work in the industry and places we love to visit and care about. In 2018-19, Phillip Island/Bass Coast tourism was estimated to be worth $529 million to the region’s economy (in direct and indirect Gross Regional Product), representing 43.9 per cent of the region’s economy. Tourism generated employment of approximately 5,900 people or 46.8 per cent of the region’s employment (direct and indirect jobs). At this time, we are beginning to welcome regional Victorians to our special place, we look forward to seeing our Melbourne and Interstate friends when it is possible. International travel is on hold, we do miss the important role we play in welcoming visitors from around the world to Victoria and Australia. Things might be a little different over the coming years, but Phillip Island’s role in the visitor economy will restart and rebuild delivering wonderful holiday experiences and positive community outcomes. We love our wonderful tourism industry and the community it supports, lets all remember to be supportive, kind and patient as the rebuild commences. 03.01.2022 If you’re planning to visit Phillip Island and its beaches this summer, prepare to stay safe around the water as well as COVIDSafe. This summer it will be impo...rtant to do some extra planning before you leave home, as public spaces including popular beaches, attractions and public areas may have increased crowds. Be prepared for your day out: Slow down and keep a lookout for wildlife Plan where you are going, make sure it is open and research potential alternative options in case it is too crowded Leave early to avoid traffic delays https://traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au/ Find a patrolled beach beachsafe.org.au/ Check the weather www.bom.gov.au/ Check beach closures and emergency information VicEmergency For more information on how to prepare, visit https://lsv.com.au/summersafety/

01.01.2022 Our Penguin Research Officers are seeing an increase of chicks throughout the colony, which is a wonderful sign for this year's breeding season! These chicks wi...ll spend roughly 8-10 weeks inside their parents' burrows before heading out to sea by themselves to face the open ocean and all it has to offer them. P.s.
