05.01.2022 This is Jacinta. She’s a truly remarkable woman, bravely dealing with the most horrible of illnesses. Just over a year ago, on her 59th birthday, she was diagno...sed with high-grade, serious ovarian cancer that had already spread to her bowel. It was a bolt from the blue for her and her family and came after a sudden onset of symptoms over just a few days. Jacinta, who is a proud mum to two adult children, underwent two major surgeries and gruelling rounds of chemotherapy and it was touch and go. In March this year, she started on a new drug called Lynparza, which meant she could stop chemotherapy immediately. In Budget 2020, we expanded access to Lynparza on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). This life-changing medication will help a further around 300 Australian women each year. Access to it would cost normally around $140,000 per course, but on the PBS it will now cost only around $41 for general patients and $6.60 for concession card holders. I spoke to Jacinta this week to find out more about her journey. Thanks to Lynparza, she has now been able to return to work, is back running, can once again enjoy her husband Oliver’s wonderful cooking, and is able to laugh again, none of which she found possible on chemotherapy. Listing Lynparza was part of a $376 million investment in Budget 2020 to add new medicines to the PBS, along with other life-saving medicines to treat leukaemia, melanoma and Parkinson’s disease. It joins the more than 2,450 new or amended medicine listings our government has made to the PBS since 2013. I never get tired of listing new medicines on the PBS because I know what a difference it makes to the lives of Australians. That’s why our government has such a focus on strong economic management so we can continue to guarantee the essential services Australians rely on, like listing new medicines on the PBS. Talking to Jacinta this week, she had the most amazingly positive attitude. Jen and I wish her all the best for her future and that she continues enjoying life living in the Shire.
