Tomorrow, The North Face trail running athlete and 2019 UTMB champion Pau Capell will be taking on the challenge of running the Tour du Mont-Blanc (TMB) and attempting to break the historic 20 hour barrier.

21.01.2022 Life in the fast lane has its consequences - and sometimes it’s only a crash that makes you slow down. That was the case for The North Face team athlete and professional skier Sam Smoothy who after an accident, last season, realized after that it’s not necessarily the speed you’re going but the time you’re spending getting there. 18.01.2022 I’ve never spent so much time focused and determined, training for one competition, as I have been for the past year and a half. The extra time I’ve had waiting for the Oceania Olympic qualifiers due to COVID has been mentally exhausting but has made me stronger and more resilient, and ready for the unexpected. One of the hardest things has been putting a hold on my outdoor goals. I’m desperate to finally get on with this competition and give it my all. This year has definitely been a life changing experience. - Angie Scarth-Johnson, training in Innsbruck, Austria at Kletterzentrum Innsbruck

10.01.2022 Mount Aspiring sits at 3033m and its on the list of peaks to climb for many. The North-West ridge is a great ski - if the conditions are on. It starts in earnest at 368m in altitude. The first steps of the 67km round trip are not familiar places for ski boots and skis, avoiding cow-pats and crossing rivers. A heavy hoar-frost covering the river banks ensures numb feet for the walk.... Reaching the top of the Quaterdeck on the Bonar Glacier marks a milestone with Mount Aspiring in sight. Putting the skis to work, Mt French to the north is a good side objective to refresh the motivation levels and remind us that carrying all that weight of skis and ski-boots was all worthwhile. On the last part of the climb and short of breath, altitude seems to sap the last of the energy reserved for the final push. The snow conditions are horrible as marks of the westerly winds are clearly visible. Rime has formed into icy ball-bearings which break under our weight and sections of blue ice threaten to send you off the ridge and into oblivion. The summit is a welcome refuge to re-centre. With skis fixed were ready. The line below us. Adrenaline starting to show its signs. We push-off and start the long journey back to river crossings, cow pats and a cold beer." -Words by Fraser McDougall Photos by @charliemurray

10.01.2022 By the time we had reception and could see the severity of the storm, with the size of the camp and the equipment that we had there, to get everything out wasnt an option. The weather just creeps up on ya - its beautiful one minute, and then its extreme, fight for your life the next. Fraser McDougall freeskier, engineer, pilot, and one of two Kiwi senders on the trip recounting the dicey weather the team had thrown at them while camping out near Watsons Crags. 10.01.2022 He has done it. UTMB reigning champion Pau Capell has completed the iconic Tour du Mont-Blanc (TMB) course, running solo with a time of 21hr 17min 18sec. Running without the presence of competitors, the 2019 UTMB winner felt compelled to take on the course and inspire all those who continue to face challenges in this difficult year, including all those runners who were unable to take part. Considered as one of the most challenging and prestigious trails in the world, the trai...l consists of a gruelling 171km and 10,000 metres of elevation gain, taking in some of the most breath-taking parts of the Alps and crossing France, Italy and Switzerland in the process. Competing alone, with just a tiny support crew of his close team ensured the health and safety of others, but also made this run as much a mental as physical challenge and required all of Paus strength and expert preparation, right down to the smallest of details. 08.01.2022 The aim was to show our Kiwi friends that the Australian mountains are something special and can put up a big challenge. 08.01.2022 Normal for me had become somewhat of a routine existence. I had no idea how regimented I had become until I was forced to change my lifestyle by the turmoil in the world around me. No longer did I have the freedom to run where and when I liked. And no longer was it all about me. I had to consider the wider implications of the potential that maybe I could get sick from someone I ran by on a trail or in the city. Or worse still, I could possibly make others ill without even kn...owing it. I had lost sight of just how social a sport running can be. While racing is largely an individual pursuit, there’s a massive community of likeminded people that I would regularly be in contact with. I had come to rely on them for not only some human interaction, but as motivators on those tough days when it’s a challenge to find the drive to train. I never really understood just how huge a role they played in my journey. In many ways, the limitations created by the pandemic have liberated me. The self-imposed routine that made me somewhat inflexible in my approach to training, has been replaced with a desire to try new things and mix it up a little. Now, my appreciation for the friends I share the journey with has only grown stronger. I pledge to share my passion for trail running with others, and showing my appreciation for their company. 07.01.2022 Not your average ski tour. Big country, exposure, scree walking, hot weather. Compressed, icy, dense snow. Skinned knees, skinned elbows, bruises. Janina Kuzma and Anna Smoothy were familiar with the conditions New Zealand could dish out, but it was all new to Ayako Kuroda, more accustomed to skiing in Japan. ... As the team crossed the Southern Alps from Aoraki / Mount Cook Village to the Fox Glacier, the ski trip turned into a gnarly ski tour, as they were chased by weather the whole way through, putting in long days, and rushing to refuge at the next hut.
