23.01.2022 In my field of nursing, we see it all. From the highs of joy, relief and ‘don’t you dare scare us like that again’ to the lows of grief, sadness, unanswered questions and unimaginable pain. In my role, I don’t stay at one bedside, I move from room to room experiencing the range of these emotions within a matter of minutes. I see this as a privilege and I try to bring joy, patience, understanding and time wherever I go. I have the time to listen, the time to make cups of tea a...nd the time to hold a stranger’s hand when they are scared. Time that is not always afforded to nursing staff and tasks that you won’t see in any job description. Sometimes we have a run of ‘good’ stories and sometimes we have a run of the stories that make us sad. These runs can leave you with a heavy heart, tears that are quick to spill over and an internal pleading that things could be different. To all the new nurses and student’s nurses who ask me if you ever get used to death and dying. My answer is that it depends on a lot of factors. It depends on the type of person you are (and either is perfectly ok), it depends on the situation as sometimes it hits too close to home or it depends whether you have had enough sleep or stressed due to other factors. Or it could be just one of those days. I have learnt, the first step is to find your coping mechanisms. I like to keep busy. I clean out all the unnecessary hospital equipment and make it less sterile. I comb hair. Perform mouth care. Freshly shave a man’s face. Apply moisturiser for the women. I bring the tissues. I ensure pain relief is administered. I give them space and privacy but I also let my presence be known if needed. I provide a source of strength but also recognise when I need to step out if I am feeling weak. When I get home sometimes I cry, sometimes I listen to loud music and sometimes I run. Today I wrote this. I am not someone who gets used to death even when it is done with dignity and in comfort. But I also don’t believe in suffering and will always be an advocate for the patients and their families. A life coming to an end can be sad but we hold the privilege of making a difference in those final moments.

23.01.2022 'For the sick it is important to have the best'. Florence Nightingale Such a simple yet powerful quote to nurse by. Although she lived in a very different era for women and nurses, she was ahead of her time in her care and management of patients. Many of her values have stood the test of time in an ever changing profession. 23.01.2022 Today is World Delirium Awareness Day. Do you regularly screen your patients for delirium? Delirium not only leaves patients and their families confused and frightened during a hospital admission, it often increases the risk of falls, lengthens the stay in hospital, increases mortality and increases the risk of dementia. #WDAD2018 #delirium

22.01.2022 After hearing many CEO's read in excess of 60 books a year, I have decided a goal for 2018 is to read one book a week. The first book was all about rejection.

20.01.2022 WOW! 100 followers on IG crept up very fast and the increasing following on FB has been overwhelming. Thank you all for your support. I have met so many enthusiastic and incredible nurses and students who have been teaching and inspiring me. #100followers #thankyou #lovewhatyoudo

19.01.2022 I'm often told I have high standards but in my practice I am aiming to be evidenced based. A good teacher won't tell the student what to do. They will show the student how to research and find the information so next time the student has the knowledge and the know how to research it themselves. It is important to empower nurses to aim for best evidenced based practice to, above all improve our patients outcomes but also to progress our profession and take pride in our work. #beevidencedbased #evidencedbased practice #progress #nurse #thenursingcoach #nursingcoach #nurseteacher #nursingteacher #nursingmentor #studentlife #studentnurse #nurselife #nursesofinstagram #nurseboss #nursegoals #nursingschool

12.01.2022 I have heard the stories many times over the years about how people visit their loved ones and see these fading glimpses of clarity, recognition and wisdom amidst the vacant, confused and sometimes frightening world. I had heard the stories, cared for dozens of patients experiencing the same and have even witnessed the early progress down this road. Today, however was different but first to go back. My loved one was a fiercely independent lady. A typical Irish woman it wou...Continue reading

07.01.2022 While setting your goals for 2019 did you remember to include study or career objectives you would like to achieve? I have been in the practice of writing down both personal and professional goals each year since 2013. That New Years Eve my husband asked me to write down my goals for the upcoming year. Thinking he was joking, I laughed at him, only to realise he was being serious. Later that year I found that list of goals and realised I had achieved almost everything inclu...ding buying a house, loving a new job and I was about to head overseas to volunteer. Over the years I have refined my goal creating skills. It helps to keep me on track and more likely to succeed if I make my goals specific and not vague, something meaningful and something I can work towards throughout the year. #2019 #2019goals #nurse #nursegoals #selfimprovement #career #careerobjectives #careergoals #study #studygoals
