25.01.2022 Compassion - our willingness to understand the suffering of others and offer help - is fundamental to building quality relationships. Humans need social connection for healthy adjustment this affects our wellbeing, even at a physiological level. Demonstrating compassion can be particularly challenging when we disagree with, or even dislike, the other person. However, this is often when it can be most powerful. So, today’s intentional wellbeing-building activity is to think ...of someone whom you do not have a strong connection with. How can you show compassion and kindness towards them? Try it out and notice how it makes you feel. 24.01.2022 Want to feel good AND build connections with others? Try a ‘Loving Kindness Meditation’ and promote positive wellbeing this #nationalmentalhealthmonth. Barbara Fredrickson, Professor of Psychology at the University of North Carolina, conducted research that found powerful health and wellbeing benefits of this meditation practice. Focusing positive intentions towards ourselves and others actually boosts our cardiovascular health, regulates our brain functions and increases p...ositive emotions. Try it and see! The 4 phrases you repeat are: May you feel safe May you feel happy May you feel healthy May you live with ease #mindfulness #mentalhealthmatters #positivitypandemic
24.01.2022 Proactively investing in employee wellbeing is not only good for our people and performance, it's also vital for our economy and prosperity. The Productivity Commission's final report into Mental Health has been released by the Australian Government today, discussing key influences on our mental health and the effect of mental health on our ability to participate and prosper in our community and workplace. It also explores the implications of mental ill-health on our economy ...and productivity - like this huge estimate of a $12-39 billion cost as a result of lower economic participation and lost productivity in 2018-19. Alarmingly, the direct economic costs of mental ill-health and suicide in Australia are estimated at $4370 billion in 2018-19. Amongst wide-ranging recommendations, the report highlights the need for workplaces to prioritise psychological safety and for wellbeing programs to be proactive, evidence-based and practical to prevent mental ill-health. 21.01.2022 Continuing our short series on intentional activities to build wellbeing - you may like to take a moment to visualise your success or your positive wellbeing. Our brains are incredibly powerful and flexible. The act of vividly visualising a desired outcome or scenario of success has been shown to support our potential for achievement. In fact, visualising a situation or outcome can actually stimulate our bodies and creates a visual memory that our brain can refer to when we’r...e performing the activity itself. You may like to use this tool to visualise success at work, see yourself going for a bike ride regularly, or even imagine your general state of positive wellbeing in your daily life. Jodi Livesley explains more in this episode of Squeeze of Oranges, including how you can visualise your success in just a few short moments at the start of your day. #2021intentions #wellbeingatwork #positivitypandemic #visualisation #mindset

17.01.2022 On Day 2 of #nationalmentalhealthmonth, why not give someone a wellbeing boost with a #gratitude note or text message? When we send or receive gratitude, our brain releases dopamine and serotonin. These crucial neurotransmitters are responsible for our emotions and make us feel good. Gratitude is often considered as a natural antidote to depression. #positivepsychology And while we're talking about positive mental health and wellbeing, make sure you're registered for our fr...ee cross-sector panel event on #mentalhealthmatters next week, or any of our fantastic events: Wed 7th - Mental health matters in business https://bit.ly/30j1vzq Wed 14th Leading through a crisis https://bit.ly/3jf7VH3 Thu 22nd - Building mentally healthy teams https://bit.ly/2SaqVdZ Thu 29th Managing burnout and fatigue https://bit.ly/30g0iIT
16.01.2022 A dose of Camp Quality positivity on #worldmentalhealthday today
15.01.2022 In our hyper-connected world, employees are more distracted than ever before. Constant notifications from our many devices, social media and software programs could be impeding our ability to concentrate and be productive at work. There are things we can do to minimise distractions and improve our focus, such as turning off notifications, intentionally planning our workday and practising mindfulness. It could be as simple as switching off desktop email notifications, deleting a social media app or taking 5 mindful breaths before sending an important email. Try it and see if it helps! #2021intentions #wellbeingatwork #productivity #mindfulnessatwork

11.01.2022 To counter-balance our brain’s natural tendency to find the negatives or the threats in our environment, we need to savour the good things! Nurturing, storing and savouring positive emotions and experiences has been shown to support our health, wellbeing, relationships, creativity and general happiness. Jodi Livesley presents this episode and offers five ways that you can savour the good, including savouring connection, noticing good experiences, savouring successes, mindful eating, and appreciating your environment. Give it a go! #mindfulness #wellbeingatwork #positivitypandemic

05.01.2022 We often discuss emotional contagion and the power of sharing positive emotions, but what happens when social contagion promotes dysfunctional behaviours? This article from Harvard Business Review includes new research that shows how we can actually transmit overconfidence, which can lead to dysfunctional norms in organisational culture. This research supports the need for organisations to develop employee self-awareness, strong emotional intelligence levels and mindfulness... practices to keep us optimistic yet grounded in reality. #wellbeingatwork #organisationalculture

04.01.2022 Are you using the power of the 'positive reframe'? Human brains are naturally designed to keep us safe by subconsciously scanning our environment for perceived dangers - this is known as the negativity bias. Because of our negativity bias, we tend to jump to conclusions that are not always true or are negatively skewed. Thankfully, we can learn to identify and dispute negative, unhelpful or irrational thoughts and stories. We can tell these stories in a more positive, or mo...re realistic, way. This is known as a positive reframe, or cognitive reframe, and has been shown to be a helpful tool to manage emotions, expand our thinking and improve productivity. So, pay attention to any negative thoughts you have - or perhaps notice someone else who is expressing negativity. How could you reframe your thinking, or influence others, to use more positive, action-oriented statements? #optimism #positivereframe #positivepsychology #wellbeingatwork #2021intentions
03.01.2022 How sweet is this taste of Oranges?
02.01.2022 This is one of the many key takeaways from the leaders who attended yesterday's #nationalmentalhealthmonth webinar event on 'Leading through a crisis'. Founding director of the Centre of Neuroeconomics, Professor Paul Zak, conducted a decade of research into the neuroscience of trust. His research reveals that a culture of trust is what makes a meaningful difference to job satisfaction, productivity, energy levels at work, collaborating with colleagues, talent retention, per...formance and less chronic stress. His work identified many behaviours leaders can demonstrate to influence the production of oxytocin levels in the brain, a chemical which increases our willingness to trust others. Demonstrating compassion and providing autonomy helps to build a culture of trust. This mini-mantra 'Ask more, solve less' is a practical way you can apply this science in your workplace to boost performance. Want more evidence-informed practical tools? We still have two more Mental Health Month events available for just $49+GST per seat: Thu 22nd Oct - Building mentally healthy teams https://bit.ly/2SaqVdZ Thu 29th Oct Managing burnout and fatigue https://bit.ly/30g0iIT #wellbeingatwork #mentalhealthmatters
