24.01.2022 What is the difference between a bone and a ligament? Bones are the structures in the body that form the skeleton and provide attachment points for muscles, which help us to move when they contract. Bones are relatively hard and very strong. Ligaments are soft tissue structures that attach bones to other bones to form joints. They are dense, strong and fibrous and can withstand the large forces placed upon our bodies when we move, to ensure we dont collapse into a big heap o...f skin and bone! #osteo #osteopath #theosteopaths #heidelberg #blackburn #anatomy #bonesvsligaments #bones #ligaments

24.01.2022 Many people get confused over whether their bone is broken or fractured. Well were here to say that there is absolutely no difference! Regardless of whether your bone has the tiniest crack or has been shattered into 20 pieces, the bone is fractured. Fractured = broken and vice versa! #osteo #osteopath #theosteopaths #heidelberg #blackburn #brokenorfractured #fracture #brokenbone

24.01.2022 To our wonderful community, The year draws to a close. Many of you will be saying thank goodness. A year like no other and a year none of us wants repeated. Melbourne people have been amazing and we all deserve to be congratulated on our behaviour. Unless you lived through it, I am not sure you can explain the gamut of feelings we have been through.... Right now I feel so lucky to be in Australia. So blessed we can now commune and look forward to our Christmas period. I feel so appreciative of the simple things, very aware it is fragile and could change at anytime. Like so many businesses it has been a roller coaster based on restrictions placed on us to provide care to you all. Now we are very busy, as busy as we have ever been. I am so proud of our team. Amazing practitioners and reception crew who all embrace the notion in being generous of heart and time needed to try and help you feel better. The Osteopaths is now 20 years old. We sit as a significant allied health centre in both Heidelberg and Blackburn and treasure the trust you give us. Moving forward please know, we seek to serve and help improve your quality of life. We are excited about the possibilities of 2021 and we sincerely hope we can be a very important part of your well-being. Have a wonderful and safe holiday period. Yours sincerely, Peter Parker Founder and Registered Osteopath. #xmas2020 #merrychristmas #osteopathy #staysafe #happynewyear

22.01.2022 Rolled your ankle a few too many times? Its best to get these things looked at by a professional, because quite often a rolled ankle injury may have also injured some of the ligaments higher up the ankle at the base of the lower leg. This typically occurs when you roll your ankle and twist or pivot at the same time, and is known as a high ankle sprain. This injury is a little more complicated and needs to be managed properly from the get-go to ensure a full recovery. If youve hurt your ankle and need some help with recovery, please give us a call! #osteo #osteopath #theosteopaths #heidelberg #blackburn #highanklesprain #rolledankle #sprain

22.01.2022 Our clinics support R U OK Day and Peter Parker speaks proudly of his belief in the cause.

21.01.2022 Thanks @nicole.tuminello.osteopath The return of school amidst a health crisis has seen some changes to class scheduling, lunch times and areas where students normally gather in groups. Many schools are ditching the use of lockers, in order to decrease crowding. While this is a great solution for social distancing, it means that high school students will be required to carry their back packs to all classes. CUE BACK PAIN. Mmmhmm . . Not all students have access to laptops, wh...ich means the reality for some teens will be heavy text books on backs! Ever wondered why your backpack has a million straps on it? Who would have thought they actually served a purpose? I distinctly remember being told to wear my backpack correctly in high school AND the day my mum threw out my cool shoulder bag (I cried, lol), so I get it. YES Backpack straps are dorky AF, but injuries are uglier so Ill hit you with some hot backpack tips and maybe Ill redeem myself. (Did I just use hot and backpack in the same sentence, yep) Also, I no longer own a school bag so this little hiking day bag will have to suffice . . . FIRST of all, your bag should not hang below your bum. For the ladies out there, a bag that hangs too low runs the risk of pulling your skirt up and revealing your cheeky cuts. Its happened to the best of us. Use the tabs on the shoulder straps to adjust the height of the bag. . . . SECONDLY, the hip strap is designed to take the weight of the bag off the spine and place it on the pelvis. By pulling the strap around your lower abdomen tight (and connecting the clip) you can ease the load of a heavy bag and decrease strain on the low back. This strap should sit just above the big round pelvis bones (where you put your hands when someone says hands on hips). . . LAST but not least, you should be able to use straps to pull the top of your bag closer to your shoulders. This helps to bring the weight of your bag closer to the centre of gravity which also decreases strain on your back. . . So there you have it! Strap up babes and boys, and your risk of back pain will go down. See more

20.01.2022 2 of your Osteopaths. While many of you will recognize a younger tanned version of Peter Parker, who is the handsome young man with him? So blessed to have this wonderful practitioner in our midst. Having known each other so long who would have thought the stars would align to work together 24 years later! Who can guess his identity? #theosteopaths #osteopathyaustralia #memories

18.01.2022 Lets not drop the ball on the fantastic activities that have taken place during COVID-19. Much of this has revolved around the conscious choice to "choose to move" in fun family based play. Mindful, joyful movement is critical to good health and less than 10% of Australias youth meet physical activity standards. Lets not let those habits slip as restrictions and the manic pace of life kick in once more. Now watch me drop my balls! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xawAglI91JE

18.01.2022 Just started working from home? With many people quickly transitioning to a home office, this is a vital time to reduce your risk of injury and look after your health & wellbeing. Over the last few weeks The Osteopaths of Heidelberg & Blackburn have seen an influx of patients with injuries resulting from their poor home workstation set-up and ergonomics. To combat this, our osteopath Dr. Shaun Coghlan is now offering online telehealth home ergonomic assessments. Shaun is a tr...ained specialist in this area and has performed thousands of ergonomic assessments. The consultation will involve a 30-minute telehealth video call during which Shaun will assess your home workstation and provide the required adjustments, advice and equipment recommendations. At the completion of the consultation, you will be given a detailed report summarising the findings. In this extraordinary situation, you could be working from your home office for quite some time. Dont wait until an injury arises as it is far better to reduce the risks now and prevent the need to see your osteopath. To book your Telehealth Ergonomic Assessment call the team on 9894 3011. Please note if booking online you will need to select The Osteopaths of Blackburn even if you are an existing patient of The Osteopaths of Heidelberg.#theosteopaths #theosteos

18.01.2022 Its stretch time! There is a position in yoga called Upward Salute (or Salute to the Sun) which targets the shoulders, armpits and ab-domen. Its nice and simple: 1. Stand with feet together and arms by your side with palms facing outwards 2. Breathe in and sweep your arms out and up towards the ceiling 3. If possible, press your hands together above your head and straighten your el-bows... 4. Gently look up towards your hands without bending backwards or letting your front ribs stick out 5. Hold for a few breaths and return to the start position Give it a go when you rise, or last thing before bed Who has tried this one? #osteo #osteopathy #theosteopaths #heidelberg #blackburn #yoga #upwardsalute #stretch See more

15.01.2022 Ankle Stability with Marcus Hopkins Osteopath Ankle instability is often a precursor to other ankle and knee injuries. Chronic ankle instability is usually caused ligamentous laxity from a previous ankle sprain or injury. The aim is to be able to stand on one foot for a minute. If this is hard try to slowly behold up to a minute before progressing to shifting your body weight back and forwards.... #theosteopaths #osteopathy #osteo #rehab #rehabilitation #movement #threadtheneedle #stretching #exercise #health #healthylifestyle

13.01.2022 Whilst we are thrilled to be coming out of restrictions, on a serious note, The Osteopaths support the continued use of face masks for our practitioners. As per the government health recommendations, patients do not need to wear face masks when being treated by an osteopath in our practice setting. However our preference is that patients continue to wear a mask where comfortable. #covidsafe #covidsanta #xmas2020

07.01.2022 Tight neck muscles? The scalene muscles in the side of the neck are commonly tight and overworked. They help us move the neck/head and also help us breathe more efficiently. A simple stretch for these muscles is: 1. Place your right hand over the top of your head and rest on the left side of your head above the ear 2. Gently pull your head over to the right to bring your right ear towards your right shoulder. Remember to keep your shoulders relaxed too. 3. When you feel a st...retch, hold for 30 seconds, relax and repeat 4. Perform on both sides #osteo #osteopath #theosteopaths #heidelberg #blackburn #scalenemuscles #scalenestretch #neckstretch

03.01.2022 Our first spring bloom at our Blackburn clinic and it gave me a lift. Some perspective on how we are all feeling from my friend Sarah. I have been quiet and withdrawn for a few weeks. This morning I feel equally happy and sad. For my friends in Melbourne, my heart is struggling for all of us. I can collectively feel so much for many. We are excited about the kids going back to school even though some of our children have to do it alone for another couple... of weeks. We see a little light at the end of the tunnel, but it's like a flicker of a candle that can blow out at any minute. We follow the rules in the hope that we can travel interstate and spend Christmas with our families who we haven't seen in way too long, but don't dwell on that thought for long as its way too scary to contemplate not happening. All we can really do is get up each morning and do the best we can. Some days are better than others. There are many things that aren't getting done, projects that are stagnant even though you want to take action, jobs around the house that are calling you but feel too hard and sometimes you just need to be still and quiet. Please know you are not alone in feeling whatever you are feeling. Be kind to yourself and never beat yourself up for feeling the way you do right now. No one will ever quite understand and that's totally ok. Right now we all need to do whatever brings a smile to our face our hearts. Much love, Sarah xxx See more
